One of my first ever big expeditions with a Camera was, against all good reason, was to climb the 3-4 miles to the top of Pilot Mountain - after working 10 hours that day.
Thursday, I had it in mind to come back to the mountain with fresh eyes and some experience.
Well... ehhh, I also didn't plan the timing of the day very well, as, as you can see, I don't have an actual photo of the mountain.
"Firekeeper, why do you not have pretty picture of Mountain?"
BECAUSE THE SUN WAS BEHIND IT!
Ughh, Charlie Brown. Well, I suppose my next visit to this splendiferous Mountain will be had at 7:00pm rather than 7:00am next round, but nonetheless, I did walk the top and grab shots as I went, and made the most of the morning mist down below, or as much as I could of it.
I took WAY more photos than I thought I did Thursday so these first four will be the first of eight to twelve from that trip. Right now, 8 seems more definite, so here's the first 4 that I've edited thus far.

Why Statesville, plaid-clad camera-person?
Because Statesville is the new location of my cousin's tattoo parlor, that just opened, and I got to photograph it!
It's called "The Parlor", go on, go there, he's awesome.
While those photos aren't public, Statesville very much is, so here's some photos I took yesterday of downtown.
As usual, my goal isn't as much to document where I am like I'm trying to prove it exists to a speculative audience, I just took a few shots while I was there.

This is a very manecured place. It's part golf course to keep the Tesla and Corvette drivers busy and off of the highways during the day, but if you walk out far enough, you can still find some rustic rather untouched wilderness, my kinda stuff.
I did end up walking out of the woods and finding Mallard lake right in front of me and beyond it, part of the golf course itself, but it was a pleasant surprise to walk out of the woods after half a mile of walking and "BEHOLD... LAKE".
Oh yeah and happy first post on the new instance. Holla back y'all, my ego needs it.

Would the Fediverse survive mastodon.social going permanently offline?

I changed the question to "permanently offline". I don't usually change questions, but in this case it seemed worth it for clarity.
@evan like everyone else i voted yes, believing that the question implied mastodon.social going offline for an hour or a day or whatever. now with this changed version of the question i am wishing i could change my vote to still yes
@evan Yes but… there might be a bit of a nuclear winter in the fallout. Unless the Mastodon account setup process makes it easy to find a home server vs the default for folks new to the experience.
@evan
Yes, but of the four instances I've used, this one has had the most people to annoy, or who annoy me.
Not sure I had a point.
Oh yeah. "Engagement"... I get more engagement here.
@evan yes, but there would be a lot of attrition network-wide. Active users would probably just pick another server. Some infrequent users might take it as a sign and drop it entirely. But then the network effect kicks in as people on other servers who were following primarily mastodon.social accounts suddenly must take action to go find people again. That could cause more drop offs, as suddenly barren feeds go largely unremedied.
@evan I think it might be a good cleanup. Inactive users are gone. The most bots and troll accounts would probably not go on anymore. Active users will look for other instances and come back.
I’m a critic of mastodon.social as I think this instance is too big and causes an imbalance of the Fediverse.
Definitely yes, but likely for folks that had joined shortly before the shutdown (ie, people unfamiliar with the fediverse as a whole) it would break their trust in mastodon as a "platform" (yes, I know it's not a platform).
@evan yes, pixelfed.social would become the next biggest server, we did briefly have more MAU last year!
@evan I think if it were to shut down permanently without warning there would be more pain than some might expect. How many are backing up their follow lists or making regular archives?
@evan@cosocial.ca It probably would, yes it would make about a million users have to find new homes but the Fediverse as a whole will stand. It's just making sure the mastodon.social users find a good new home what makes sense for there use case.
@sam Probably in the ballpark. I don't think many inactive users would be likely to try to move. I'd guess more like the 268K monthly active users, maybe up to the 706K half-yearly.
@evan yes but, as we saw with mastodon.lol and other instances, it would severely harm the confidence in the ecosystem. The collapse of some fedi instances drove people away to other non-fedi platforms because they offer the promise of stability.
@evan Yes, but it matters how Mastodon.social goes.
If everyone has plenty of time to move their accounts, then this would be a positive example of how the community can survive hosting and/or governance changes.
If it vanishes without warning, then it would be a very negative experience for a huge chunk of fedi and give many people the impression that fedi is flaky/unreliable, which has been the takeaway for some people on smaller deceased servers already.
@evan
"Yes, but..." it would be a hard transition phase for many. How hard depends on if it goes offline instantly or if people have time to move their accounts.
@evan yes but I feel a significant would leave. Yes it’s federated but many don’t have a mastodon they are just federated.
@evan Yes, but the amount of content that would disappear from the Fediverse would be massive and felt for a while
It wouldn't be as catastrophic as, say, Bluesky's infrastructure going down since that would affect a lot of other ATProto services (including some of my own) that would take some time to pick back up
But it would definitely be felt across the network, if for no other reason than all of dot social's post content would be gone
@evan "Yes, only..." if they gave their users adequate time to switch to other instances. If it just disappeared one day out of nowhere, that would be really bad.
@evan
Why would you want it to?
Aren't we all way better off staying #connected for the cause of #freedom of #expression without #digitalID
@evan Yes, the Fediverse would survive but would many accounts which don't migrate to another instance.
@evan Is this an option?
@jill mastodon.social is run by a German non-profit that depends on contributions to operate the servers. Like most non-profits, they probably have reserves to keep operating for some period of time, but if they ran out of money, they'd eventually have to shut down the server. So, in the bad case that Mastodon GmbH ran out of money, I think it's possible. Let's make sure that doesn't happen!
@evan
Definitely. We might not have the same amount of reach for a while, but the people on there could always transfer to other servers, and the other servers would function just fine without them, even existing as archives of that server.
Thanks, everyone. So, Fedidb.com shows that about 1 out of every 4 users on the Fediverse is on mastodon.social. I think if mastodon.social rolled up over 3 months, per the server covenant, then maybe 10% of them would move to other servers. Most accounts would just disappear.
@evan MAU or total? There's so many inactive & garbage accounts on there, if 10% are active meatbags who move elsewhere, I think that would be a great success.
I think there would be a period of activity as those of us who are left try to figure out what to do next, and a bunch of other servers throw in the towel too. Then, with considerably less activity, a slow decline. A few holdout servers, a long tail of family or personal servers, and then quiet. A lot of bots still running. Without content, people wouldn't load their timelines, and without people being active, no new content. Vicious cycle.
I think there will always be servers speaking ActivityPub on the Internet.
But I don't think that's necessarily a "real" social network.
In this situation, if we're lucky, ATProto would continue to take off and would stay open.
If we're unlucky, under VC pressure Bluesky would try to claw back some control over the network and/or protocol.
If we're very unlucky, Bluesky would eventually close, too, and probably take the ATmosphere with it.
How do we avoid this? I think we need more people here. More big servers. And a more diverse set of protocol implementations.
Anyway, my answer is no but. No, the Fediverse would not survive, but some remnant ActivityPub servers would.
@evan Would you have the skill to analyze your timeline's last month for what percentage of its posts come from mastodon.social?
How could this happen? I can think of three reasons.
mastodon.social is run by a nonprofit with a million dollar budget. It costs about $100K/year for hosting alone. They might just run out of money.
There could be a legal threat, and the service might not survive it.
Or the team might just go in a different direction -- building a PDS or a collaborative notepad or something.
I don't think any of these is likely, but none of them are impossible.
@evan Are the details of that $100k/year posted somewhere? I don't doubt this, but I'm so curious about how this happens. Must be must bigger than I can fathom? (Is there a "market" for a much more efficient Mastodon?) So many questions. (-:
@sean I don't know; I got it from the 2024 annual report. 84K€ for hosting, probably not counting admins.
https://joinmastodon.org/reports/Mastodon%20Annual%20Report%202024.pdf
@evan Thanks Evan for exploring this and thinking about it. I wasn't aware that the fediverse at present has this very distinctive shape - actually somewhat similar to the ATmosphere with its one huge instance and a couple of smaller ones. I don't have any thoughts cos I'm a novice here but I appreciate knowing more.
@evan I think the Fediverse will survive. But you’re right that a loss of mastodon.social would be a hard hit for the Fediverse.
The strategy of mastodon.social is working pretty well. There Page is the landing page of the mastodon network. And the easiest way to join mastodon is just pressing one button and your on. Yes, of course you can also choose another instance on their landing page. But it’s a few clicks to do and doing this is not as present as the “one click on” method. And placing the “choose your instance first button” as the only option to join the mastodon network isn’t in the interest of mastodon.social. They want to get the most mastodon users on their instance. It doesn’t matter to them, that they are creating a critical concentration of users on one instance that’s jeopardising the Fediverse.
I compare mastodon.social with cancer. Growing like hell, out of control and a jeopardy for the whole organism which is the Fediverse.
What can we do against it?
One thing that people who don't write #ActivityPub software might not know is that Mastodon has remarkably low rate limits for other servers to make requests -- getting data from or sending data to a Mastodon server. The rate limits are hard-coded in the Mastodon software, and they're for the whole server. mastodon.social has the same rate limits as your server on a Raspberry Pi. That means that the server that you need to access about 1/4 of the time is throttling everyone's access to it.
@evan What to do with this information? Would a 'newby' or start server with some help and a time limit (3 months?) work? By then users can find a community and move to it? Maybe an idea for a poll ...
@burnie configurable rate limits in Mastodon, or having 20 or 50 newbie servers (maybe per-country subdomains like fr.mastodon.social, mx.mastodon.social, au.mastodon.social).
@evan explain please
@darth I literally just did
@evan I still don’t see the problem. It’s not like I ever had a functional problem with my Mastodon server so if it is conserving cpu cycles the way you described it then all seems good, no?
EDIT: sorry, now I read your bio and I see where you are comming from. Ignore my reply.
@darth no problem. I think rate limits are important for any Web server. In the Mastodon software, they are hard-coded, so a big server like mastodon.social with 3M users has the same limits as a personal server on a RazPi with 1 user.
@evan your first point is quite an issue. And I know reducing these costs is an important ongoing challenge.
Recently, I'm convincing myself that the way mastodon is used, posts become practically useless about a week after they are written. The exception is ~0.01% and a bespoke solution could be implemented to archive posts in such a way that they are retrievable according to such a heuristic. Another dedicated policy would be needed for particularly large (media) posts.
@evan Slightly off topic, but contrasting this to other social medias I use (whatsapp groups, LinkedIn) most of the mutuals here I only know from here. For the others, theres usually a real life connection. I don’t know how common this is.
@evan if the protocol supported true account migration (all posts with all attachments, all likes, boosts etc.) we might see more people standing up their own single or multi user instance. I'd do it, but I don't want to loose all my previous posts and data.
@evan Oh that is great news that this is being considered! I'll give this a read over the weekend :)
@evan a corollary to your stated position is that mastodon.social’s content is integral to the Fediverse, am I understanding that right?
@evan Why do you think that losing 1/4 of users would make people no longer want to be here? The network had 1/4 fewer users in the past, and it was already lively then.
@gregprice I think it would not just be from having fewer accounts on the network posting, although I think we are dipping pretty low for a sustainable network already.
mastodon.social is also a hub in the network; users there redistribute content from other parts of the network with their boosts and replies.
It's also the flagship server. It would be a hit to morale to have it taken offline.
@evan Yeah if we define Fediverse as ”general purpose social network” like the big four, then yes, it would disappear, but it’s questionable if we’re tall enough to be on that ride to begin with.
If Fediverse is ”connected network of communities” then no. The communities would lose some members but keep going, that’s the current ongoing trend anyway. But I think there will always be Fediverse communities on the internet
@0xtero what do you mean by "big four"?
@evan Facebook, Insta, Threads and Twitter. I do realise there are lot more but those seem to be the pre-accepted answers to ”what are your socials?” question around my neck of the woods.
@0xtero interesting! There are good metrics here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_popular_social_platforms
@evan That’s a lot of people under that Meta social umbrella 😫 Looking at the picture on that scale makes the Fediverse disappear, with or without mastodon.social. We’re not really in the same race.
For me, closing infosec.exchange would make a bigger impact than mastodon.social disappearing. That’s what I meant by communities continuing to exist.
But all of this is based on my anecdotal ”feelings”
@evan
I suspect your 10% might be low. I think most active users understand that migrating is possible. Given a person that understands they CAN migrate, the choice in the face of a closing server becomes a choice between a mildly inconvenient chore, and abandoning whatever community they have found here. I suspect this is a simple call for active users.
@TheGreatLlama we're both guessing. Let's make sure that when the next big server goes offline, we get an idea of what % of people move.
Well...
looks at all the commenter's and OP's home servers.
and his ownWell, yes, apparently. The Fediverse would be fine.
@evan do you help maintain Mastodon.social? I assumed you did because you were offering this poll. But I do not see anything about that in your bio.
@bmoreinis I do not. I work on the Fediverse, and I am concerned with its overall health. I was polling my followers as to their thoughts on how concentration of users in one instance affects the wellbeing of the network.
@evan OK, thanks! Do you plan to do anything with the results?
@bmoreinis here are my thoughts:
@bmoreinis here is what I think is actionable:
@evan Yes, I see -- the problems and responses you forecast include:
1) Not enough good content => user drop-off, so promote & curate
2) Too much bad content => casual user drop-off, so shake the M.s tree by forcing supportive migration*
3) Not enough funding => more server churn, so too much tree shaking, so promote donations**
* create subdomains on M.s for those who don't want to find intentional community?
** https://joinmastodon.org/sponsors#donate distributes to servers per load levels?
Kielbasa and kraut with Texas Pete and cornbread. 😋
Who/what is Texas Pete, and
how is he/it to eat/with?
Texas Pete is a hot sauce that goes on everything from eggs to greens to barbecue.
Texas Pete is also made in North Carolina.
Not to be confused with Carolina Kate,... made in Texas.
Well, I took about 120 photos over the last three days, and not one of them is on this SD card.
The last photo per this SD card, was the last photo shown taken on Pilot Mountain.
...Why aren't they? I have no idea. It makes zero sense. I took photo after photo, reviewed them, took video, reviewed it. I'm livid, and beyond pissed because I was going to lay into you guys with new content and now, nothing, I guess?! They were fucking there 3 hours ago. They were there 6 hours ago. They were there yesterday! Did my Desktop do this? Did my laptop do this? Is this corruption? I have no idea.
I'm just gonna go for a while.
I'll be back maybe idk,...
Right now just... fuck everything and make it a double. What a waste of time, energy and effort.
edit: Disconnecting for a while, ciao. No internet, no nothing. I need it, peace.
New high end cocktail: The Reflecting Pool.
1- line your glass with a blue fruit roll up.
Then you're going to need:
2 oz rum
4 oz juice that is kinda yellow (pineapple, mango, orange, lemonade, whatever you like)
1 oz blue curacao (you can adjust for color)
Garnish with lime zest
The yellow and blue liquids make a lovely shade of algae and the rum eventually melts the blue fruit roll up, which is, IMHO, the best part.
Enjoy!
OK, cultural impasse here... WTF is a 'blue fruit roll up'? Sounds like something I'd smoke, to be honest!
@bytebro
Some European equivalents include:
Fruit leather – The generic equivalent. Available in health food stores and many supermarkets.
Bear Fruit Yoyos – Rolled fruit strips made primarily from apples, pears, and other fruits. Popular in the UK and increasingly found elsewhere in Europe.
Urban Fruit fruit strips – Another UK brand of dried fruit snacks.
Fruit Bowl Fruit Peelers – Similar peelable fruit strips aimed at children.
@bytebro
By country
France: Look for cuir de fruits ("fruit leather"), though it's often sold in organic shops rather than mainstream supermarkets. Stores like Biocoop or Naturalia often carry them.
Germany: Search for Fruchtleder or Fruchtrolle.
Spain: Láminas de fruta or rollitos de fruta can sometimes be found, especially in health food stores.
United Kingdom: Probably the easiest place in Europe to find American-style fruit snacks and fruit leather.
@VeroniqueB99 @bytebro I’m sure the French could chop up a few Haribo Stroumpfs (Smurfs) as they are mostly blue gelatin. Will be harder to create the blanket effect though but if you use a little guillotine cigar chopper in the poor smurfs it could add to the political taste of the cocktail.
Fair distinction for the record, Fruit Roll-Ups are made of fruit juice, a tiny bit of pectin and loads of sugar, rather than fruit leather, which is more properly ... well, mashed-up fruits. They're therefore more able to dissolve in the liquid, providing the colouration and flavour you see here!
A dissolved fruit leather will probably give you a murkier, algae-pond look, so it might be truer to form but less palatable.
@VeroniqueB99 I’ve seen that first image floating around with a recipe that calls for matcha and spirulina powder, and there’s no way it could end up looking like that. So I’m thinking that’s an AI image.
That second one however, with this recipe sounds spot on. I will be making this later evening.
@rrgeorge 👍 report back! Pics or it didn't happen! 😉
@VeroniqueB99 I used pineapple juice, and the first attempt came out too frothy, but once you start drinking it starts looking a bit weird… so far the fruit roll up is also holding together just fine.. maybe I should’ve layered it instead of shaking it so the rum isnt diluted when in contact with the “liner”
@VeroniqueB99 round 2, I built it directly in the glass. It’s a bit more blue than I’d like, and I added a bonus garnish. When I was at the store getting the fruit roll ups needed for this, I saw the dried seaweed snacks and thought that would be a fantastic addition to such a ridiculous cocktail. I think it really works 😂
@VeroniqueB99 Surprisingly classy looking for starting with "line your glass with a blue fruit rollup"
@VeroniqueB99 Any way we can work a circus peanut into the recipe? 🤔
@rinkside 👍 🤣
@VeroniqueB99 Yeah, you know what I’m thinking. 😂 … Gotta give a nod to the person behind this epic masterpiece, right?
@VeroniqueB99 I'm having people over on July 4. I was just going to make a white sangria with peaches, but maybe this would be more appropriate.
@VeroniqueB99 or make it sparkling with 4oz Mountain Dew, specifically Baja Blast Mountain Dew for that extra Mountain Dew Mouth aftertaste. Murica!
@VeroniqueB99 I sent this to my aunt and she obliged!
Thanks for the good laugh!
and yeah #pipetobacco people, I got the small batch at a local shop! Who knew living one state away from Cornell and Dehl would be a good thing?
And yeah it does have a... Sunny D note lmao.
Man, I am impatient to go photo grabbin, but it's not supposed to rain today, so I'll take my gear to Salem Lake instead!
@skeletor I humbly disagree. My grandfather was paid by the government to punch Nazis. (Actually, he was issued a bayonet, but close enough.)
@skeletor Not so humbly disagree, we can seriously agitate to reduce the number of awful people in the world.
@skeletor When coworkers justify toxic behavior as "Corporate", I became self employed and one day if my company will become large, I'll have zero tolerance for toxicity; and I'll redefine corporate into ethics and moral behavior first. Humans and people first.
@skeletor No. That's not an answer. That's just conflict avoidance. THat's how you end up with fascists gaining power right under your nose until they become strong enough to kill you and everyone like you.
What you propose is little more than a maximally painful way to be forcefully euthanized.
@skeletor Hey! 👋

@skeletor it's not enough. silence is compliance. I'm reminded of that scene from The Pianist where one says they're a significant number of people against the nazis... the other says let's wait... they didn't fight back and they cramped into a cargo train, shipped to their death.
There's this great finality that we've crossed a threshold in which we can't be as evil to eachother as we have been ever again. That was us, it isn't us now, and we'd never let any of that happen again. Racism was wrong, slavery was wrong, segregation was wrong, nonequal voting rights and social standards were wrong. We even took a great leap and decided the Nazis were wrong, collectively. Harassment of the LGBTQ+ community and differences between person to person are often treated like old issues. We'd moved past all that. That was the 'old US'.
"As I etch this final tome, I harken back..."
Man, I hope nothing happens to ruin these authors' bright outlooks on the future of humanity in oh... five years.
"We keep putting Epstein class shills in charge and they keep paving the road to fascism. What gives?"
Politics at the national level is a revolving door of the worst people with the worst ideas trying and failing to make people eat shit and like it.
None of these people have a winning platform because it's just variations on "cut taxes to turn more billionaires into trillionaires and gut public services to pay for it." With heaping spoonfuls of genocide support and bigotry on the side.
But it hardly matters when voting is just choosing which flavor of shit you like best.
At least in the UK, you can sometimes force a resignation or a no confidence vote and new elections.
Unfortunately, when it's an intra-party decision, they just shove another loser up front to to take the heat. And when it's an actual election, they just lie and then go back to doing the same things.
Remember when Keir Starmer was the trans friendly, vaguely leftist civil rights attorney? Yeah.
@gwynnion someone (probably here) wrote about "how did the human rights lawyer turn into an arsehole" is backwards - he was an arsehole first, with a law degree, and became a human rights lawyer to create a public persona.
@gwynnion I think the main problem is not politicians, it's voters. Look at Brexit: None of the mainstream politicians wanted it, yet here we are.
@gwynnion I'd like some good shit please, the kind that helps the tired and poor.
Public services are quite shitty from my experience. Declining support seems to be the more popular choice for them.
Let them eat shit, it seems.
@GreenRoc Like, we could fund Social Security into lunar orbit if we just removed the income cap on taxes. It's been obvious for decades that will have to be done to keep the system afloat. But NO ONE from either party has ever done it nor are they talking about doing it.
They don't care.
@gwynnion Lack of compassion is rampant among the elite.
They think culling social security would fix the national debt, yet the news of the green in the reflection pool has reached news outlets around the world. Millions upon millions of green paper that could keep countless mouths fed!
Wasted on gaudy construction. What a waste of human lives. I hate being in America right now.
The system works for them. To them, nothing is broken and our grievances are par for the course. Turning their heads costs them nothing because they know we won't actually do anything.
@firekeeper @gwynnion Sadly, that perspective seems to be the case.
Turning away, reminds me of the Queen song "Under Pressure"
Why dont we give love one more chance.
I am doing as much as I can, but social media has decided I'm just spam, and I'm suspended for speaking truth.

OH MY GOD IT IS A CONSPIRACY!!!! ALGAE?????
AL G!!!!!
AL GORE!!!!
HE’S COME TO TAKE HIS REVENGE FOR THE 2000 ELECTION!!!!1!
My dad was a good person, so much so, that he's the bar I use for other southerners. I knew him up and down, his motivations and what he really believed. It took a few years to get there but he laid it all bare if you gave him enough time to tell his stories and see the cracks in the red-white-and-blue paint.
My dad was born in 1938, a son to a blue collar worker too old for the draft, but still close enough to WWII for the reveling and the patriotism. Dad was seasoned with the goings-on in the 50's and 60's, events and hype. He drove his Dodge and Chevies, watched Eastwood films, jammed to Johnny, Waylon, Willie and the boys, and smoked a pack a day until he was 60-something. He even had a stint as a cop for a few months until it got to his conscience.
Dad was not "that guy". Dad repeated phrases and sayings of other men to fit in, but like anyone else in the South, It's what you do, not what you say. Even having said that, I have a hard time even finding an n-word from the man in my mental record in the 28 years I knew him.
He'd say something to the effect of:
"Well, yeah, we... had a hand in some riots, but I wasn't there that long. I didn't like the work."
Why he didn't like the work, he wouldn't outwardly say in that moment, as his generation mainly kept those types of thoughts to themselves, and my dad would be the last person to paint a bad picture of the cops. No one would ever "say", or show weakness. It's just not in the Dude Bible of the 1960's. You had to catch the details in passing or bait it out some other way, but his way of telling stories all the time got the job done, and there was one other thing. There was one aspect of my dad that came with most people born in the late 30s. Dad. HATED. NAZIS.
Dad hated ze nazis so much that they dominated any other hate for anything else. Dad's hate for nazis even eclipsed his born-into hate for communists. Dad had a soft-spot for Russia -for fucking over the nazis! Dad hated nazis even when there was no call for hating anything, and the symbolism used. You couldn't have "any old cross" in the house. It had to be peer-reviewed (by him, naturally) to make sure Hitler didn't use it, which actually happened in relation to a necklace I had once.
Dad read a lot in his final days, a lot of political analysis books, usually stuff about global spy networks and shadow governments ran by oligarchs. I was too young to see who or what these influences were, good or bad, but in memory, dad wasn't too happy with the state of the world by the late 2000's.
"We are at the mercy of the super rich and super intelligent."
Dad's entire ethos was patriotism. But by then, he had pride in his country, but not his government. He had pride in a down-home southern farmer's market, but not Bush or Obama. There was a love in him, but a hurt in him, a feeling that he was physically and mentally out of time with the world. It had been better, it had been right and just and now was not, although I believe proof to the contrary had hit him by then.
Dad never gave anything the benefit of the doubt but God, and nobody and nothing else got the pleasure of having it. If you said something fucked up and insensitive to him, he's slap the snot out of you. If you said it with God or America's blessing and quoted some congressional dribble, you'd get "the look". (aka: "Smartass...")
By and large, my dad is my great example of how upbringing, peer pressure, time and place can't hide or ruin who a person is at their core. Dad's conscience walked him away time and time again from the worst crimes you can commit against other men.
He had lowered every gun he'd ever aimed.
"You know, Jack really wants to shoot a deer. I've seen two or three already and it's only been a few hours since we put the salt out."
"why didn't you shoot one?"
"I... I don't want to take anything from Jack is all..."
AI is the death of all human culture.

Important detail...
'...The money that flows to Iran's is Iran's money: that the US froze and refused to give back but will now release under the deal. The $300b is the maximum Iran can get. That's not from the US or from Americans, but from a private fund financed by the Persian Gulf dictatorships and their oligarchs...'

Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur tweets:
They raped a man.
They gang-raped him.
They raped him so brutally that he had to be hospitalized.
Doctors documented the injuries.
The video of the assault was leaked.
Now the rapists are free.
This is not just unlawful and immoral. It is sick!
@jd
They even protested to support their troop's right to rape hostages.
Their rabbi backed them up and they became TV celebrities in Israel.
None of that was reported by our free press

@jd I would say otherwise. It is the birth of human knowledge and human culture. AI allows a good brain to realize that a lot of so-called human knowledge is unrealistic and flawed. You need a good brain to understand what I am talking about.
“They begged to have a picture with me.”

@jd ew what the hell is that thing doing at G7?! wouldnt the cleaning crew have removed a mess like that from the carpet more promptly.
come on team lets raise the standards a little, there are heads of nations present.
@jd Ah, looks like he just shit his pants again and there was too much decorum to tell him. Easiest to move away from the stench than confront it.
Conservatives have been banning and trying to ban shit "for the children" for as long as I've been alive. Hell, I'm one of those things they want to ban.
The perfect conservative environment is a stalk beige room full of bibles and not much else, maybe a water cooler, nothing phallic.

NO
These #antimemetic beings walk next to us in every day life, feeding on taboo and sensitive topics in our culture and keeping them bound in mystique. Our confusion feeds their entire herd, and has fed them for generations, eons, since man first took cannabis to flame.
Allusion to these elephants, like anything else, is swept under the rug. They, like the topics they describe, do not exist in a conversational sense. They delete their own presence, but there's a lag. We see and note them, know they're there, but usually after it's too late. Was there ever an elephant? Of course not. That's just what the elephant wants you to believe, as it's another thought it stole from you, but you know you saw it, didn't you?
Whether these elephants collude in their collective confusion-making is unclear, or what their cosmic goal is beyond sustinence. Are they intelligent, or do they pick topics based on our perceived personal shame or discovery?
Needless to say, this is all for not, as like any other written form of media, the elephants know this message has been posted. An elephant near you knows that the second you read this, he must spring into action and devour this discovery to protect his species' survival.
Who's post did you even boost? "Didn't I read something 20 minutes ago?"
Anyway, I'd say "be wary" a few more times, but soon you'll realize there's nothing there at all.
...What were we talking about?

What’s wrong with a show at a birthday party?
Can anyone tell me the best Linux distribution?
It’s hard coming up with new ideas for movies and series. Has anyone thought about remaking old movies and series?

I, for one, am very sure, Mr Dude, that Elon Musk does NOT have my best interest at heart.
And now that you mention it, I'm not even sure that he has a heart.
@Mrfunkedude Maximum trolling alert!!
@Mrfunkedude I hope you used Linux to post this gif!! 🙃

Run, do not walk, away from Chrome. Unless, of course, you enjoy being tracked and your personal information sold for Google's profit.
If I may interject here, what you're referring to is the Google implementation of the Chromium engine. Switch to Linux.
@Mrfunkedude
Mr Dude, Google Chrome is a very good browser to use if being spied upon is your goal.
Otherwise, not so much.
@Mrfunkedude Yeah, but would liked to have seen the Kubrick version tho.
@Mrfunkedude
Wasn't that a depressing Steven Spielberg movie a few years back, Mr Dude?
@Guillotine_Jones no. It’s something new called “artifactual intelligence“. Apparently it’s gonna change the world.
@Mrfunkedude@beige.party oh, that old Spielberg movie?
@aud who’s that?

@An0n organs feeling good is nothing to sneeze at. that's most of the party right there. congratulations on kicking the habit, I highly respect such herculean feats. 🤌🤌
Ahh that's kind of you to say,l! But I consider myself in a perpetual state of quitting, never having properly quit 😅
A contact online led me to some of Mark Twain's writings on religion. Knowing he was also a southerner who was raised on similar teachings to me - and... kinda knowing how he turned out in the end had me interested.
For those who don't know, Samuel Clemens was a deeply conflicted person in regards to religion, and it makes sense considering his upbringing and childhood culture. Even in his most heated, hateful, searing, atheistic writings you feel... a pain, a hurt, a feeling like he had been duped and is lashing out years of lies and liars, and in some sense you even get the idea that despite feeling the afterlife is all a lie, and an antiquated puzzle for fools, that he really wishes it wasn't so.
That claw sticks with you, as a nonreligious southerner. It's true. You remember, and you know that 'feeling'. You did want it to be true. You did want to believe it, to fit in, that the good word wasn't supplemented with dark words you passed over until you believed otherwise, back when huge, galactic spans of time were issued in seven day spans. The cult always looks so nice from the outside and you really don't want to admit or give credit to any of the cracks in the paint to the contrary when you're still sipping from the town kool-aid fountain along with everyone else.
Everyone you know is saying it's true, and everyone you know - as far as you know is 100% telling their heart's honest truth. Despite all this, you love and respect them as your community as they respect you into theirs.
Do you have any idea how hard it is to look one of them in the eye and say no, and watch the veil fall a little on them, then see the grip of their belief tighten against that instant of doubt, in the moment as it happens, as they choose their resolve... over you, their brother? I've seen it happen in front of me, over and over again. Sam comes off to me as someone who has seen this himself, as someone who has also been hurt by it and has felt separated from his kin by it. It does alienate you. You ask yourself over and over why they can't see and why you can, endlessly tossing it in your head like a marble with no target. It's usually at this point that an atheist goes two different ways, in my experience. They either make monsters of the religious, or realize that the true sadness is that the religious are asking them the exact same question you're asking. "Why can't you just see? Why can they?"
The funny thing is, after all these years and after reading "Letters from the Earth", and being steeped in philosophy, I get it, man. Sometimes,... you really do wish, despite everything else, despite the truth, the elephants in every room, the endless connections to political dramas, wars, corruption, and all of the lies. Despite all that, you still remember that bored kid you were in Sunday School, taking anyone's word and a smile for truth as genuine as being told a red crayon isn't blue or the green grass isn't yellow.
Packing one for you, Sam.
A long time ago, I was heavily involved in the Vape industry right out of the gate, made a lot of mistakes trusting a lot of the wrong people, and after it was all said-and-done, I was plopped right back into blue-collar slave-wagery with the only quarter given being the experience had.
For about four exciting years of my life, we were on an industry high that felt like a whirlwind of fortune and dreams. It was my young inexperience that expected the updrafting gust given by CEOs and investors to last forever, and our jobs whittled down more and more, until the Vape industry cuddled into gas stations and convenience stores, overseen by the same industry giants that we - at one time laughed at behind doors we thought would stand forever. I'm happy, all things considered. I pay my own way, as a mechanic, these days. It took a while to realize that my real treasure is experience. I don't make as much as most, but I can work anywhere and do nearly anything considering the shit I've been through over the years.
Aside from that, I've been at least some color blue since I was in High School. I've never leaned right, and the Iraq war was my introduction into the American art of creating your own wars for profit. Recently that shade went more solid blue than liberal, I consider both sides two halves of the same coin, even if 5 or 6 paid Democrats actually do say what everyone's thinking, the rest get their salaries earned through enabling the things we post memes about on places like this.
I've been on the internet since Independence Day came out, I had a floppy game lol, that came in a cereal box. I've been crawling and bouncing UBB boards for years, then Reddit, then Lemmy, then here.
Anyway, we get a lot of time to look at pretty photos, boost and boost and favorite ourselves to death, I figured if we're going to go out soon, you might as well get a little bit more out of me than just another photo of a tree before the curtain rolls in.
I'm hoping I'm wrong, and I'm wishing to anyone's deity - if listening, as a great opportunity for a chance at potential spiritual conversion if they take the job of reversing our course.
Until then, I'm gonna go take a photo of a mountain in three hours. Seeya there.

Howdy folks, as some of y'all are aware, I carry an Android phone - specifically a Oneplus 11 on Lineage.
This whole 'Android dev lockdown / verification' situation irks me. I don't like the play store, I see it as a den of malware and villainy, only meant to peddle corporate spyware, invasive Ai agents, tracking systems and ads into our lives.
So I am faced with a dilemma, but as a millennial, I remember Y2K. The world didn't end just because it suddenly went from 1999 to 2000, and so the world won't end just because September is coming, then August, and so forth.
There will be holdouts, there will be devs who 'dgaf', who continue putting out apks for 'unverified' Android. Hell, you'll likely have two years of boredom and tossing it about in your mind before you actually have to do anything about it to function in society.
So, where do I sit? I'm in the holdout camp in the short term. I have a plan for the bigger picture that will basically treat a post-2026 cellphone like a piece of radioactive material that's only purpose is to beam a tetherable wifi connection, and only be used for calls and ordering pizza whenever it's rarely let out of its Faraday bag or vaccum-sealed lead box.
Thanks to Google, Apple and Microslop, We live in a caustic world that hates and despises us, but that's all well and good.
So do they.
Ideally, I want a ~50mm pancake equivalent for this to match my R8. Something in the 24-35mm range should do for APS-C. I'm not that picky, but for now, the stock lens will do fine, and it closes up rather tiny even if it is a zoom lens. All good!
I have my DuckDuckGo search set to no AI and also to hide AI images, but a lot of AI images make it through regardless. The zone is just flooded with slop.
Ai images from other sources, and Ai articles written for the exact question you asked with layers upon layers of bullshit into infinity.
@Nickiquote I gave up on DDG because the results were full of blogslop. "Before we look at how to sharpen a chisel, we need to know what a chisel is...". 🙄
Startpage isn't perfect but it seems a bit better in that regard.
If adults can have 420 and 69 as their "funny" numbers, then the kids can have 67.

@firekeeper I decided that I can wear second-hand leather, so I do have some cute boots. It's always so hot here, though. 😕
#starTrek transporter question. Do "you" die and "just" a copy of you walks out the other side?

Actually, without graphics, I assume you're about to paint a house.
Today I learned that in @librewolf I can type "translate" in the URL bar and get to a text translation UI.
This is powered by a local model and part of the Firefox translation thingy. I guess it must work the same way in Firefox?
Anyway, this is great. Local model, pretty solid translations, now possible to use directly to translate copy-pasted text snippets, not just text on a website.
Local models will eat Big AI's cake.
(usual caveats apply, such translations are always imperfect!)
@firekeeper I'm sorry if my post was unclear and made you think Iw as asking for recommendations of translation solutions. I was not.
Wow this is nice :) thanks for your post 👍

If that's not the issue, not sure what is. I'm on LibreWolf 151.0-1.
I'm not really cheering for any side on this one, lol.
This is a little greyer than Hot Fuzz.
I am currently addicted to nicotine, have been for 15+ years. I started smoking right out of high school around "the wrong crowd" and I've been vaping ever since and recently transitioned to smokeless tobacco/snus and velo. My habit is currently controlled, isn't as unbearable as it used to be, even if I should quit.
and I should quit... anyone should. No one should "start", which, btw, disclaimer
: If you aren't currently biologically addicted to nicotine, stop right here, take inventory of yourself. This is a small blog, an opinion from one man, one misguided, weak human being. Do not take anything here as a suggestion. Good? Good. Do not consider me influential. I am not. Do not take my words as suggestions. They are not.
Ok, continue with this "examination" into the mismanaged life of a drug-addict, which you (obviously) are not, and will continue to not be by the time this is over.
Won't you?
wipes forehead I'm watching you! Don't you dare open ebay.
Alright...
It's mellow, enjoyable, calming, surprisingly cheap and you'd never want to do it constantly anyway. There's an entire process to it that makes it a full-on, attentive experience and it isn't something you'd want to do whilst preoccupied with other things.
How it differs
If pipe smoking is "smoking", it's about... 70% incense, and 30%... actually "smoking".
I'd say that yes, technically a pipe was "smoked", but only in the sense that a fire was lit and I enjoyed it tangentially, not in the same sense that I lit a joint and attempted to injest every bit of it lest I waste the $120 worth of bud wrapped up into it. Pipe smoking is less interested in the ingestion of (insert drug) and more interested in the...
_...ingestion of_
_V I B E S._ ~ Cello plays ~
Am I advocating that anyone young or old out there goes and buys a tobacco pipe and reads some Lord of the Rings by a tree outside?
Y-yes, actually. That sounds lovely. Can we bring a dog and some picnic supplies? Some watermelon. It is summer, after-all.
-Wait a minute, NO. That's not how this goes! You aren't supposed to want to do this! Stop smiling! Do NOT go and get addicted to nicotine because some lonely millenial is adventuring into fantasy novels and has decided that full-bore immersion would be neat. This is a sad tale of woe!
If you are my age, and you've made your mistakes, and you want to chill, yeah, come with me, fellow graybeard. To the mountain! Grab your churchwarden and staff. We leave at dawn.
It's halfhearted at best, even at that. So they aren't maga, even-still, they're still 70% in step with maga belief and policy.
Yeah yeah. Just let us know where the air vents are so we know where to dump a few trucks worth of rubberized caulk.
USA friends, isnt using woke as a negative adjective basically racist?
Depends. Woke isn't always about race, it's also thrown around into lgbtq+ discussions too.
Trade the 'woke' out for 'compassionate' and the blur becomes clearer.
but if the context is race... yeah.
