This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.

Installing gentoo on that laptop for the first time took me twelve freakin' hours lmao over the course of a day off.
I know the 'flow' now, but I'm in zero rush to install #gentoo on a server.
You know I'm gonna do it, tho.

It's the first OS statement I've read that specifically mentions the ethical issues. That makes me happy.
No idea what will happen with the linux kernel in #Gentoo, but for the moment it seems like a legit option.

Was excited to install #NetBSD on my laptop last night. But then found it apparently does not support my wifi setup.
So, I'm pivoting to #Gentoo today. I ran their Live USB and it worked really well.
So, yes still #Linux but they've said nope to #AI and I'm happy with that for now.
I'll keep looking at BSD distros. #OpenBSD apparently does support my devices but, from what I'm reading, is significantly slower on the desktop. My laptop is no terribly hefty, so don't want to load it with something that's already slow.

Debian has the reputation of being stable and reliable. At the cost of being horribly outdated.*
I'm new to Linux on the desktop (as a life-long macOS user only using Ubuntu on servers), but other Linux distributions (including rolling release distributions) don't seem unstable. Maybe that was the case once, before my time, but #Gentoo seems very stable and #Arch seems to break only if it's your own fault after messing up configuration files, not due to updates or dependencies.
To me Debian has no selling point.
Now that they're embracing LLMs, you cannot even claim anymore that Debian is the go-to distribution for (web) servers where reliability and stability is the priority.
* For example, in 2024 I contributed some much-needed fixes to Python's black, isort and pre-commit, and some Debian user who was years behind, rejected them for breaking his ancient Debian setup.

Est-ce que vous savez s'il existe une version pdf du manuel quelque part ? J'ai trouvé des versions du manuel 1.0 qui datent d'il y a 3 ans (on est à la 1.14 si j'en crois le changelog du site officiel) donc je sais pas trop si c'est encore utilisable...

I have been using #Debian since around 2004.
That is 22 years, for those keeping count.
I cannot express how disappointed I am that Debian is going to allow for #AISlop to be used in commits. For 22 years I have been a fairly vocal advocate for people to use Debian.
Over the next couple of months I will be transitioning all of my Debian systems to #Gentoo or other Non-Slopified distros.
So... I can enable binaries if available, but if they aren't available, it builds the package from source on the spot like how people classically think Gentoo does.
The install process was a bit head-scratchy just because I'm new to Gentoo but overall, this shares a ton of parallels to installing Archlinux without an install script or helper.
The cool thing about gentoo is that you almost have to learn about how the system works to install it to start with. Your choices, and they have to be your choices, this is a very 'elect' system - make the system what it is, literally. There's nothing in the pot that you don't throw into it. It has a few defaults and some config files are set up well enough for any standard desktop, but for the most part, you're about to find out how OpenRC, Wayland, SDDM and KDE work together.
It's flexible. I didn't make brand new filesystems or nuke my old drive. I blanked the partitions I had then adapted them to Gentoo. I had an efi/main partition/swap setup already and it was easy to translate that to Gentoo's layout of... the same layout lmao.
That's one of the cool things, here. Gentoo's guide doesn't MAKE you do anything. There are so many "ifs". It's extremely flexible and you wrap your system around it every step of the way. Everything fits and there's a "oh, you have X? Then do Y" for everything, seems like.
Where are we right now?Right now I've rebooted, grub successfully has my kernel loaded and we're going forward with installing KDE, SDDM and making sure Wayland and X11 both do their thing for getting me logged in... then I'll move towards solving any sound issues and from there, packages and getting the desktop set up.
So far so good, and no real errors to back up and deal with, believe it or not. Things have been pretty buttery, but I have had to go looking for clarification on a few things like make flags and such.
In the future, as I think most people running Gentoo do... it would probably be smart of me to copy these files for use if I ever have to restore this system from scratch. Having it all canned would save on time.

I'm a #Debian faithful since around 2012, but I've always wanted to go down the gentoo spiral. My Thinkpad is my usual toy, so I picked OpenRC and KDE, I'm at the initial system steps, I have yet to reboot, still chrooted. We'll see! 👌

Zero days since the #Linux #kernel made a security release of all branches, containing exactly one patch, except for 6.12 which was skipped for no clear reason, and there doesn't seem to be anything about that on the ml. And now I'm scratching my head if I should do a backport for #Gentoo, or wait for the release, or perhaps there was a good reason why the patch was added to every other LTS branch but not 6.12…
Zero days since 83 #Gentoo developers effectively lost push access over revoked PGP key signatures because of random #LDAP hiccup.
Yes, we have error handling. And yes, we have a safety check in case error handling didn't work and LDAP returned empty list of developers. Yet apparently that's not enough either, so now we also check if the diff between old and new lists isn't too large; you know, in case ldapsearch randomly returned a subset of developers and considered it a success.
#Python Hypothesis package now requires #RustLang. This is a scale of reverse dependencies I can't handle. I guess this means it's the end of WD40 profiles on #Gentoo, and therefore the end of support for Alpha, ARM<v6, HPPA, M68k, i486 and some other random subsets of architectures and profiles. Thanks for all the fish, etc.
Computers used to be fun. I used to use Windows 9x, and it was unstable as hell, and you kept having to lean over backwards to get things to work. Then I used bleeding edge Linux, and at some point I've ended up running pure framebuffer tty for months because X11 was broken. But despite all the breakage (or maybe even because of it), it was fun. It was fun because random accidental breakage was the worst you could expect.
Nowadays, accidental breakage is rare. Things are relatively stable. However, every step of the way you have to watch out for bad actors. No, not criminals, they are rare. Evil corporations who are looking at every opportunity to fuck you up. Using computer is no longer fun, it's no longer a tool that helps you, and it's no longer your choice. You are forced to use it, and if you don't want to be hurt every step of the way, you have to spend all the effort on fighting back. And you're fucked up anyway, because even if you manage, your family and all the people around you won't care and will let their devices, their computers and their smartphones fuck you up.
I've started using FLOSS so many years ago, for the trivial reason that I didn't want to pay for software. I stayed because I enjoyed doing it. And I wanted to make a difference, I wanted to contribute positively to the world. Even if in a little way, but I wanted to be able to say that as much harm I've done to the planet, there's at least something positive to balance it out.
But nowadays I hate FLOSS. It's been overrun by the worst people in the world. The people who aren't happy with just fucking you up. They want everyone to keep fucking everyone up. It's the kind of horror where whatever you do, it turns out you're causing harm.
I don't trust my #Gentoo #packaging work anymore. So much of the software I touch turns out to be #slop. When I file a pull request, I'm worried it will trigger #LLM reviews. When I file a bug, I'm worried it will trigger LLM responses. And today, I've learned that my old bug report to a #NoAI project resulted in a dozen slop pull requests already. Whatever you do, #AI folks smile and tell you "see, you fucked up the world even more after all".
Honestly, I don't know what to do. I hate all of this so much. But even if I managed to figure out something else to do for a living, I can't escape computers. And if I stop doing them, if I stop fighting them, I will only end up being fucked up more.

git.gentoo.org is now effectively dead, being DDoS-ed by almost a million different IPs every day. Most of them are just performing a single request at a totally random URL. How are people supposed to deal with that? How can we distinguish a legitimate user who hit some URL from a scraper that distributes its operations over thousands of IP addresses?
If you use LLM crap, you're part of the problem. You support these bastards. You should be ashamed of yourself.
