    Went for a nice paddle today on a local lake. Perfect conditions— just enough wind to cool us off from the heat. The turtles were out in force taking in the sun on their logs around the entire perimeter. A very enjoyable experience!

                                                          While at the Island Mere hide a Reed Warbler was hunting for Damselfly’s and taking them back into the same spot in the reeds.

                                                          We assume it’s for a nest, it was amazing to watch and was totally unbothered by us. I hope the photos do it justice.

                                                                    It's always exciting to see a new species in my garden, and today it was this small dragonfly. I'm pretty sure this is a female Darter, but I can't decide whether she's a Common, Red-veined or Yellow-winged Darter. Regardless, she's welcome here and also very photogenic.

                                                                    If you can identify the species, please let me know :-)

                                                                    A bright yellowish dragonfly sits, facing to the right, on a head of bright mauve Verbena bonariensis. The face and eyes are brown above, yellowy-green below with a small, hexagonal, white patch of reflected light on the eye. The six legs are dark with a yellow stripe along the length and small, regularly-spaced hairs. The thorax is light brown on top, yellow on the side with thin black markings. The four transparent wings hang down somewhat, towards the flower. They have black veins and pale grey wing spots in a darker border near the forward tips.. The abdomen is mostly yellow, becoming slightly more brownish towards the tail. It has thin, brown and black markings circling it. The shape is wide behind the thorax, thinning by S4, (the forth segment, counted backwards from the thorax), before widening slightly again to S8, and finally thinning again. Segments S8 and S9 have a black marking on their tops. The out-of-focus background is a mixture of soft greens and pinks.

                                                                                Did you know that the European mole (Talpa europaea) has a toxin in its saliva which paralyses earthworms, their favourite food? The moles may then store the paralysed earthworms in special 'larder' chambers within their burrows, where they are kept alive and fresh until later consumption. These larders have been reported to contain many hundreds of earthworms at a time!

                                                                                When it's time to visit their pantry for a snack, these moles have a clever trick to make sure they don't consume all the unpleasant soil stuck inside the paralysed earthworm's guts... by rolling the earthworm between their powerful front paws, they forceably squeeze the soil out of the worm, making their meal much less gritty!

                                                                                  I think this is the day.

                                                                                  I’ve longed toyed with the idea of leaving home on foot, hiking the paved trail to Mount Sentinel, and climbing it.

                                                                                  It’s a small peak, the hike to it long, but flat. The endeavor as a whole, though, is ambitious. 🤔
