So, I don't know if I've talked about Monthly Movie Night on here before.
Way back in 2014 my wife and I had an idea to watch all the Best Picture Academy Award winning movies, in order, from 1927's "Wings" up to the present-day. We would watch one per month, which , if everything went smoothly, would have us catching up the the present day after a few years.
The family got word of the idea and liked it, so we invited them all to come over. We have a big family, and they're almost all locals. So every month we've been hosting about 15-20 people, to watch a classic movie.
We do themed food. (for instance, this month is a western, so we're having chili)
We have a popcorn machine. (a real, full-sized one)
We do movie trivia (with the night's winner, second, and third place receiving the movie candy boxes of their choice, respectively. The cumulative trivia winner for the year gets to pick the New Year's Eve movie. (Yes, we do Movie Night on New Year's Eve every year)
Before the movie, we run a cartoon that matches the theme of the movie. And then we run a trailer for the next month's movie. And then... roll film!
After the movie, we go out and sit around the fire pit, listen to music, and chat until midnight-ish.
Well, 12 years later, we're still going strong.
We've celebrated announcing our first pregnancy at movie night. We celebrated announcing our 2nd kid at movie night. Our youngest is now 7, and our oldest is now 11. To them, a monthly movie night is just a given - "doesn't everyone do a movie night?"
The audience has also grown older. My wife's grandma has come to almost every movie night, and she's now 97 years young and still going strong. She's a hoot. She can't remember anything you just said to her just a minute ago, but she can recount some of the craziest stories from her past. Stories about each of the aunts and uncles that come to movie night, and who are now also in their late 60's/70's.
The goal of watching all the Oscar winners stayed as true as we could make it.
For some movies, they were just not great for a mixed audience, so we skipped those and went with the biggest Blockbuster of that year. When both were no-go's, we picked another fun one from that year.
For Halloween, we always pick a classic. This year we're going with Edwards Scissorhands (even though that's obviously a Christmas movie)
But my kids really want to see it, and they think it's creepy and should be a halloween movie... anyway...
Inevitably, the Oscar winners became too heavy (our last Oscar movie was The Artist, which was fitting, as we both started this journey with a silent film and ended it with a silent film.) so we now have a "fishbowl".
The "fishbowl" contains slips of paper, upon which guests have written either their favorite movie, or a movie they think everyone would enjoy together and might not have seen before.
Tonight, we're watching Stagecoach (1939) - John Wayne's first big hit.
I just love the poster.
Anyway, that's Movie Night. A right-honourable tradition that I hope never ends.

The Love Hypothesis movie, based on a best-selling novel, is coming to Prime Video. Who doesn't love some fake dating shenanigans?
The post Fake Dating Goes Mainstream in LOVE HYPOTHESIS Trailer appeared first on Nerdist.
Since I was a little boy, every time I see a movie or TV show in which a spurned lover decides to work to get back the [girl/boy], I cringe. I want to yell at the screen (and I sometimes mutter under my breath), "They made their choice. They have expressed their preference. Nothing good can come of this." They need to go have a night out with a friend or watch bad TV or whatever.

It begins with The Philosophy Of Time Travel, an 800-page piece of found-document fiction set 14 months after the film’s conclusion. [Richard] Kelly spent a decade writing the book, which lands in bookstores this fall for the film’s 25th anniversary. Kelly hopes the book will be the first part of a Donnie Darko sequel series, including an animated adaptation of Time Travel that features some motion capture. The story would then move on to a new live-action film set 28 years after the original.

Just finished watching Geostorm. While I do enjoy a mindless action flick - I couldn’t stomach the end. So American. I put this movie in the same category as Independence Day and 2012. Global catastrophes. Meh. #movies
Does your favorite genre change depending on the medium it's in?
I ask because, for instance, horror is my fave movie / TV genre, I find it an okay game genre, and I don't like horror books much at all.
Fantasy is my fave video game genre, and probably books too, but I don't tend to care for fantasy movies/TV.

But the #PopCultureHappyHour people didn't, and I wonder if it's because I'm steeped in comic-book lore and they're (mostly) not?

Was THE STUFF (1985) the WORST #Monsterdon movie of the year? Vote in the poll! ⏬️

Now that you've finished your lunch, we have only one question for you;
Was THE STUFF (1985) the WORST #Monsterdon movie of the year?
God yes, I can't eat fluffernutters anymore: 3 It wasn't that bad.: 25
Finally got a chance to watch BACKROOMS. I'd never seen the web series Kane Parsons did, but the movie works as a solo piece. Set in a furniture store in 1990, it's weird AF and felt like a communal bad dream. Worth watching for the crazy sets alone. Art Department must have had a blast making this film!
Folks it is only an hour or so until #Monsterdon the weekly monster movie watch party. If you want to avoid it, best set up a hashtag filter now.
If you'd like to join in, this week's movie is THE STUFF (1985), a horror flick about evil corporate executives selling a foodstuff that turns people into mindless zombies. Ha, imagine! Unsafe food! What an imagination.

*Of course* the nerds restoring original Star Wars from film to spite the special edition have spent over $16,000 of their own money buying reels, having them professionally cleaned, professionally digitised (scanned at 100MB per frame), and then on the storage needed to allow editing of such a huge amount of data. And of course that's going to be nothing compared to the amount of personal love and labour put into such a project.
I'm kinda in awe, and I *love* that people do this.

#UnpopularOpinion, and one I struggle to admit: I think the 2012 remake of Total Recall is better than the 1990 original. I still really like the original, but the 2012 version knocks it out of the park.
Ray Bradbury Day 🎂
