      Happy ! This is a peak that dominated my horsepack trip last week— both logistically and aesthetically. From the beginning of the trip, its presence and beauty dominated the view. On Day 2, we traveled along its base up and over a pass. While camping at the base on the far side of the peak, I hiked up above the treeline to take this pic. I love this mountain!

        It’s currently dark, sunrise still an hour away, and it’s only 44F (6.6C) outside. That’s dangerously close to jingle bells.

        I’ve been noticing changes in the mountains for a couple of weeks, but yesterday noticed leaves changing in town.

          The tide was full, and the water had gone completely flat, so the stone arches came out twice in the frame. We were lucky. The weather back home in Blarney was atrocious, with rain falling from cloudy skies....

                  Just now got back from my 5-day horsepack trip. We did a traverse across a mountain range in the Colorado Rockies which included going up and over a pass. Camped in three different locations. Had a blast! More pics to come!

                        I have to confess some (OK, a lot of) ignorance about England outside of its cities. We’ve been to the country a number of times, but that usually means going to London and then visiting a few other relatively urbanized places. So “my England” has been basically London and a few (mostly popular) towns. We’ve passed through the country on trains and looked down on it from the air, but this trip was the first time that we actually went out and walked through it. I learned a lot!

                            My husband headed out the door just after 4am to photograph the Blood Moon partial lunar eclipse this morning.
                            Gutted I couldn't go.

                            The full moon looking quite red due to the eclipse over the white chalk stacks and red and white lighthouse at the Needles. The moon's light is reflecting off a rippled deep blue sea. Clouds in the pale blue sky add interest but do not obscure the moon. A peaceful scene.

                              'A sea of clouds during the eclipse'

                              Short video made out of single photos taken in a 10s interval by my 2nd camera on another tripod.
                              Had no special filter for this one, since I was using my 20 mm wideangle lens.

                              The change in brightness in the last few decimal percentage points of the partial eclipse just before totality is truly remarkable.

                                  20230506 | the patagonia fjords filled with rainbows and dolphins

                                  as part of my Patagonia trip in 2023, I had the privilege of being on a small boat that launched us into the Chilean fjords of the Patagonia region. We had been in this spot for a while (it had been pouring down rain for a bit) and in addition to traveling up the fjords and riding a zodiac around, we did a lot of off-trail hiking. This area is so wild and untouched. Then, this rainbow was happening for literally hours. And then these dolphins started jumping around. Several folks were editing aboard and I was watching from the stern and captured this photo with my tele lens! It drips with the notion that anything is possible.

                                    Came back home from a t4t event and saw that here on fedi that there was aurora activity!

                                    Never before had seen aurora and was curious and excited (couldn't make anything out from our apartment).

                                    it was probably 2200 and i asked my then partner, wanna go see if we can see it?

                                    i think we were both kinda eepy, but we decided it was a go and so i grabbed the photo gear and we headed out.

                                    20 or so minutes into driving down I-84 eastbound, we could see it clearly out the car windows!

                                    kept driving at least another hour to try to find a spot to capture it further out in the gorge.

                                    there were so many ppl out and by this time it was almost midnight.

                                    stopped at a little spot that actually overlooks I-84 and set my manual 9 mm f/2.8 (sold this lens a while ago) on my Fuji X-T4, got focus, and took this shot.

                                    we kept driving another hour or so east and ended up in cascade locks down by the park and got some lovely time together just enjoying the colors.

                                    headed home and i think we got home around 0300 or a smidge after iirc.

                                                  Taken earlier in the year on a multi-day hike in Kosciuszko.

                                                  After hiking that day & setting up we headed out for sunset & made our way out to the edge of the mountain, there was a valley sucking clouds up the side of the mountain which were then breaking up into pieces

                                                  It definitely made for a nice watch as the sun got lower then finally dipped, cloaking the area in cold & dark

                                                                I can’t believe it’s been twelve years since I visited Glacier National Park. In its honor, I’ll share a some views.

                                                                On the far side of a grassy field are a line of short pines. Beyond them, beneath a mostly clear sky, are a line of rocky peaks made up of sedentary rock, talus slopes around their bases. The layers in the peaks are obvious.

                                                                  Today we went to West End!
                                                                  --

                                                                  Today I awoke to a dreary overcast day, perfect of the universe to give me an overcast day on the only day in a few months that I've even had to go photographhin', but we work with what we're given. The journey is the destination and all that.

                                                                  So here are some buildings and the scenery in the main part of West End in Winston Salem, NC. Not a terrible ton of fodder out there, but enough to fill the till for the day and get me out and about for a while.

                                                                  After this I went and had some dipping tacos at a legit Mexican place and got mom a taco salad to take back home with me. I didn't feel much like stopping too many places.

                                                                  The workflow has evolved. I now have neat little imagemagick scripts. How quaint! After I edit with , I run my scripts to downsample my images to the size I like at the quality I like for my server.

                                                                  As-is, my photos tend to overexpose, but I can always wrench them back on the editor. The camera says my brightness is perfect, but it always looks too washed out to me on the editor. I would trust the .jpeg files from the camera as-is if this wasn't the case, though I did do some cropping on two of these.

                                                                  A Blue/Brown contrast I really liked that I was playing with, there's another set of buildings that look similar to this one, like they traded paint... but the other building is one street away.

                                                                    Was watching the radar and feeling bummed that Tucson, 130 miles away, was getting the storms, but then the little puffy cloud-that-could lit up red (rain core) on the radar. I grabbed my gear and drove 5 minutes to my favorite spot where I hung out for 4 hours and got two nice shots.

                                                                      Yesterday, I hiked up to an alpine lake. It was part of a network of lakes connected by a stream. The trail passed through scenic meadows and wooded areas, plus by one of the other lakes. Enjoyed the view at the lake while having lunch before turning back. A great day!

                                                                          Today I toured a bit of Garden of the Gods park (Colorado Springs) on foot. So many gorgeous rock formations! I hadn’t been there since my parents took me when I was 9 years old. It left a distinct impression on me then, even at that young age, and I was happy to return today as an adult. I also thought a lot about my parents’ excitement during the experience. I am “carrying the torch” and continuing the excitement.

                                                                                I went for another hike yesterday on my Colorado adventure. This time I drove the car up to a ridge in the foothills of the mountains, then hiked a loop along the ridge. The trail took me through a mix of forested areas, lookout points to see expansive views of the valley, and meadows. There were many beautiful wildflowers such as this in the meadows.

There are patches of golden brown dormant grass growing in many of the cracks. A forest of cedars and leafless hardwoods grows on either side of the cliff. The view is just appearing, some rolling hills and buildings a few hundred feet below. The late afternoon sky is a pale blue gray. Most of the visible sky is covered with a cluster of hazy thin clouds. The sun, setting behind the haze, is a large roundish blob of golden fire, painting the surrounding haze orange and yellow.
