New Zealand forests are just built different. I spent hours in this place among chest-high ferns, just taking it all in, letting nature do its thing while I watched with a camera & a huge smile on my face.
Bonus points for no leeches - Aussie forests seem to want a blood sacrifice

I took this photo earlier this week on a private photo workshop with a guest from Switzerland. I tend to focus on details instead of the entire landscape, like for this cascade.

Good day!
Purple? I’m a fan, which is a good thing this year because fleabane seems unusually abundant.
And then there was the oversized plant that was oval instead of round. It was impossible to miss, but difficult to photograph owing to the breeze.
Be everwell.

The Forgotten Gate
Basalt columns always add a sprinkle of magic to photos. Combined with the moody sunrise, this felt like a scene from a fantasy book to me.

As The Fires Settled (2022)
During wildfire season in 2022 #JasperNationalPark in #Alberta was partially burnt and ravaged. Shortly after the fires reduced again I was able to drive through the park and take some photographs of the changed landscape - it was heartbreaking. Of course, worse years were coming the following summers... This image is one of the hillsides, partially burnt away with the dead remnants a deep brown red.

Good day!
I think this is the day.
I’ve longed toyed with the idea of leaving home on foot, hiking the paved trail to Mount Sentinel, and climbing it.
It’s a small peak, the hike to it long, but flat. The endeavor as a whole, though, is ambitious. 🤔
Be everwell.

🧵1/2
July 5, 1983, 43 years ago today: Late in the day, the AT began to skirt a huge complex called Big Meadows which sprawled across acres of ridge crest. A short climb on a side trail brought me to the summit of Black Rock (not to be confused with Blackrock, a peak I traversed further south in Shenandoah).

For this photo, I am making an exception to my rule that the photo was taken on Buck Hill. Instead, Buck Hill and the Blue Hills range become the subject matter for this long distance 'looking back' shot that I recently took near the summit of Mount Watatic in Ashburham MA, about 53.4 miles away.
From this vantage point, the Blue Hills are merely a tiny bump on the horizon, invisible to the naked eye. In fact, even photographing the range with a telephoto lens, it was not immediately clear which hills I was observing. Two things really aided me in identifying the most prominent peaks. The first is the Ulrich Deuschle website that can generate topographical panoramas from (I think) any place on Earth. I put the link below.
https://www.udeuschle.de/panoramas/makepanoramas.htm
The other factor is the coincidental alignment of the Newton/Needham TV tower complex which happens be directly in between the Blue Hills and the Wapack Range. Using Google Earth, and comparing this image to the Wapack Range panorama (link below), I was able to deduce which hill was Buck Hill because of it's close alignment with the CBS Tower and Mount Watatic. It took some work, adjusting the exposure and contrast, to even see the TV Towers in this image. But all four of the can faintly be made out.

One of the surprising things I found in this image is the distinctive profile of Hawk Hill, which often gets obscured by other nearby hills. I would assume that the extended prominence that I have labeled as Hancock Hill also includes Breakneck Ledge and Hemenway Hill.

Good day,
Ever notice how a mountain has no need of saying a word? It simply is, and that says everything.

New long term photography project: Timefade — prints and animations documenting alpine places and their changes over decades or a century.
First place completed: Breslauer Hütte and the glaciers of the Gurgler Range. Two images from the same location, separated by 103 years: 1923 and 2026.
The hut was built in 1882 and has undergone several restorations and extensions. The major peaks from left to right: Großer Ramolkogel, Hinterer Spiegelkogel, Firmisanschneide, Schalfkogel, all between 3400-3550m
The shrinkage of the glaciers in this view might seem rather small for a time span of a century, but it's worth remembering that most of the volume losses have only been during the past 25-50 years and the melting process itself is exponential and accelerating... Secondly, for a size/scale reference: On the rightmost glacier (Diem-Ferner), the elevation difference between the top edge of the side moraine and the glacier creek is now >100 meters (more than a 30 storey building)...
It might only be two photos (some more are already in progress), but production involved several weeks of library research (see below) of suitable locations and images, feasibility studies on old & current maps trying to determine photo spots, lenses and viewing angles from where the original pictures were taken, travel and hiking logistics, then taking dozens of photos from different candidate points in situ. Back home after the shoot: Testing different candidate images for best match/alignment potential, tweaking and fine tuning their perspectives, video editing...

Independence Day 2026, 250 years.

Let us not celebrate where we are, but where We the People can lead this house divided, yet a house nonetheless.

For #ForestFriday I want to share one of the first "good" images I ever took - I didn't realize it was "good" at the time, but, I've come to love this image. Don't delete your Raws!
I took it months after buying my first #Fujifilm on a trip to #Guatemala with my sister as we hiked up #Acatenango #Volcano

Good day!
This little cascade was in a truly magical location, and not one a person would associate with Montana.
No big mountain, no sweeping vista. Instead, a tiny stream in a narrow gulch. I doubt there’s anyone local who knows this exists.
But now you know.

Here is the view looking back toward the ridge and summit I had hiked up to last month in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, NH. At this point, I was traversing along a contour of the cone of the highest summit before I looped back down to the trailhead. Looking forward to returning to this ridge real soon! #MountainMonday #hiking #nature

Good day!
It’s 48F (20C) and raining. Is this falling as snow in the mountains? No idea since I can’t see them.
In just the last few days, we’ve exceeded our normal amount of moisture for June.
Live somewhere long enough and you experience all kinds of things.
Be everwell.
