Today we went to West End!
--

Today I awoke to a dreary overcast day, perfect of the universe to give me an overcast day on the only day in a few months that I've even had to go photographhin', but we work with what we're given. The journey is the destination and all that.

So here are some buildings and the scenery in the main part of West End in Winston Salem, NC. Not a terrible ton of fodder out there, but enough to fill the till for the day and get me out and about for a while.

After this I went and had some dipping tacos at a legit Mexican place and got mom a taco salad to take back home with me. I didn't feel much like stopping too many places.

The workflow has evolved. I now have neat little imagemagick scripts. How quaint! After I edit with , I run my scripts to downsample my images to the size I like at the quality I like for my server.

As-is, my photos tend to overexpose, but I can always wrench them back on the editor. The camera says my brightness is perfect, but it always looks too washed out to me on the editor. I would trust the .jpeg files from the camera as-is if this wasn't the case, though I did do some cropping on two of these.

    @firekeeper I have noticed that modern cameras seem to want to overexpose by default usually... phones are particularly bad for this too.

    Pilot Mountain - The Failed 2nd Coming

    One of my first ever big expeditions with a Camera was, against all good reason, was to climb the 3-4 miles to the top of Pilot Mountain - after working 10 hours that day.

    Thursday, I had it in mind to come back to the mountain with fresh eyes and some experience.

    Well... ehhh, I also didn't plan the timing of the day very well, as, as you can see, I don't have an actual photo of the mountain.

    "Firekeeper, why do you not have pretty picture of Mountain?"

    BECAUSE THE SUN WAS BEHIND IT!

    Ughh, Charlie Brown. Well, I suppose my next visit to this splendiferous Mountain will be had at 7:00pm rather than 7:00am next round, but nonetheless, I did walk the top and grab shots as I went, and made the most of the morning mist down below, or as much as I could of it.

    I took WAY more photos than I thought I did Thursday so these first four will be the first of eight to twelve from that trip. Right now, 8 seems more definite, so here's the first 4 that I've edited thus far.

      And so, The Firekeeper was just out there, in Tanglewood, as he tends to be, taking photos of trees and plants and the like, walking about as he does...

      This is a very manecured place. It's part golf course to keep the Tesla and Corvette drivers busy and off of the highways during the day, but if you walk out far enough, you can still find some rustic rather untouched wilderness, my kinda stuff.

      I did end up walking out of the woods and finding Mallard lake right in front of me and beyond it, part of the golf course itself, but it was a pleasant surprise to walk out of the woods after half a mile of walking and "BEHOLD... LAKE".

      Oh yeah and happy first post on the new instance. Holla back y'all, my ego needs it.

                        Today I learned that in @librewolf I can type "translate" in the URL bar and get to a text translation UI.

                        This is powered by a local model and part of the Firefox translation thingy. I guess it must work the same way in Firefox?

                        Anyway, this is great. Local model, pretty solid translations, now possible to use directly to translate copy-pasted text snippets, not just text on a website.

                        Local models will eat Big AI's cake.

                        (usual caveats apply, such translations are always imperfect!)

                                      I bought a , used off of ebay. I'd been feeling a bit of a vibe to my reading and at some point looked up from my book about two weeks ago and was like "you know what...".

                                      I am currently addicted to nicotine, have been for 15+ years. I started smoking right out of high school around "the wrong crowd" and I've been vaping ever since and recently transitioned to smokeless tobacco/snus and velo. My habit is currently controlled, isn't as unbearable as it used to be, even if I should quit.

                                      It's mellow, enjoyable, calming, surprisingly cheap and you'd never want to do it constantly anyway. There's an entire process to it that makes it a full-on, attentive experience and it isn't something you'd want to do whilst preoccupied with other things.

                                      If pipe smoking is "smoking", it's about... 70% incense, and 30%... actually "smoking".

The was reportedly arrested moments later and his house searched (presumably because he was already on police radar so his vandalism just gave them an excuse). He was done for drugs and firearms offences on top of the criminal damage.

I would say on (1), though, that sometimes it might be better not to reply directly to a stranger who you disagree with, if you're not reasonably sure they'll appreciate you jumping in. (Which they might not for various reasons, including engagement exhaustion.) It can sometimes be better to post your own take for the counter-point you want to make, in a way that avoids "subtweet" passive-aggressiveness by focusing on an idea and not a speaker.

                                                                                                                                        Finished "Before they are Hanged" by Joe Abercrombie. Good middle-book. Lands a bit flat but carried well, well set up for the end. Starting Tad Williams's "The Dragonbone Chair" since I'm sunsetting Abercrombie's series in one more book.

                                                                                                                                        It's um,... a bit jarring to go from cynical backstabbing to whimsical tale starring a young hopeful teenage lad, but rather than shun it for more hopeful and optimistic outlooks(which ain't happening), I'm trudging on with the hope it grows with maturity as the protagonist ages, if Simon even is the protagonist - NO SPOILERS.

As you can see, there's concrete in these photos. This is "The Jungle" as they say, full of apes, not squirrels, and this Jungle in particular, is downtown Statesville, NC.

                                                                                                                                                                                                And so, The Firekeeper was just out there, in Tanglewood, as he tends to be, taking photos of trees and plants and the like, walking about as he does...

                                                                                                                                                                                                This is a very manecured place. It's part golf course to keep the Tesla and Corvette drivers busy and off of the highways during the day, but if you walk out far enough, you can still find some rustic rather untouched wilderness, my kinda stuff.

                                                                                                                                                                                                I did end up walking out of the woods and finding Mallard lake right in front of me and beyond it, part of the golf course itself, but it was a pleasant surprise to walk out of the woods after half a mile of walking and "BEHOLD... LAKE".
