Folks it is now less than an hour until the weekly monster movie watch party. If you want to avoid a flood of goofy toots about a monster movie, now's the time to set up a hashtag filter.

If you'd like to join in, this week's movie is WOLFEN (1981), in which a detective searches for serial killing werewolves. There's gotta be easier ways to earn dog catcher money.

The flick's available free with ads on Tubi: tubitv.com/movies/100045177/wo

Or you can download from Archive.org over here: archive.org/details/wolfen.-19

Just hit play at the top of the hour and toot along! See you there :D

A sleek, red, torpedo-shaped vessel flies through a dense forest with its nose pointed toward the right. A dark horizontal stripe runs along the side of the craft, and white light radiates from behind it in sharp, jagged rays. Dark, textured tree trunks and branches occupy the foreground and middle ground, partially obscuring the vessel against a background of blurry, vertical streaks of yellow, green, and white.

Art by by Darrell K. Sweet

The cover of James P. Hogan's "Inherit the Stars", illustrated by Darrell K. Sweet, depicts three astronauts on a desolate, rocky, moon-like landscape under a dark, star-studded sky. In the upper center, large, bold, yellow sans-serif text reads "INHERIT THE STARS," with "THE" smaller and positioned between the other two words. Above the title, a white quote reads, '"Pure science fiction...Arthur Clarke move over!"—ISAAC ASIMOV'. Below the title, the author's name, "James P. Hogan," is written in a white, stylized, cursive-like font.

In the foreground, an astronaut in a bright red spacesuit lies prone on the brown, rocky ground, facing the viewer; their visor reveals a skull-like face. To the left, a second astronaut in a grey, textured spacesuit uses a shovel to dig into the dirt, featuring a reflective blue and white visor. To the right, a third astronaut in a similar grey suit leans over a large, dark brown rock, looking toward the astronaut in red. All suits feature visible patches, straps, and life-support backpacks.

The background is a deep navy sky peppered with bright white stars and faint nebulous patches. The light brown, monochromatic ground is filled with uneven terrain and various rocks. Dramatic lighting casts deep shadows, suggesting a single, harsh light source from above. The top right features a white "SF" logo over "A DEL REY BOOK," and the top center reads "Ballantine/30107/$2.50".

Movie poster for "THE THING from another world!", presented by Winchester Pictures Corporation and Howard Hawks, with cover art by Drew Struzan.

The massive, stylized title "THE THING" dominates the upper and middle sections. The letters possess an organic, fleshy texture with dark brown and tan spots, featuring viscous liquid dripping from their bases. Above the title, a large white question asks, "HOW DID IT GET HERE?" Near the top, "HOWARD HAWKS' Astounding MOVIE" appears in bold white font, while the tagline "from another world!" follows the main title in white, lowercase, italics. The background is a deep blue gradient transitioning to light cyan, with dark, vein-like or tentacle-like lines spreading from the center.

The bottom third features photographic montage panels. On the far left, a man and woman in dark clothing look at each other, above a group of men in heavy winter gear. Center-left shows a man in a green military cap and brown jacket leaning toward an obscured face. To the right, a man and woman appear in a medium shot wearing dark coats. The bottom right features a larger close-up of a man in a brown jacket and a woman in a red and white patterned sweater. The lowest panel depicts a group of men in dark, heavy clothing.

Bottom text credits: "Directed by CHRISTIAN NYBY", "Producer - HOWARD HAWKS • Associate Producer - EDWARD LASKER", and "Screen Play by CHARLES LEDERER". An "RKO RADIO PICTURES" logo is in the bottom right.

              Who Goes There?
by John W. Campbell, Jr.

Cover Artist: Hannes Bok

The cover features a dramatic, high-contrast, vertically split illustration. The title, "WHO GOES THERE?", is printed in large, bold, black, sans-serif capital letters at the top. The author's name, "JOHN W. CAMPBELL, JR.", appears in large, white, sans-serif capital letters in the bottom left and right corners.

The scene depicts two large, monstrous humanoid creatures flanking a small, white, robotic figure. The left creature, shown in profile facing right, has pale, blue-tinted skin, dark hair, and a muscular body with a large, bushy, blue-and-white tail curling upward. Its hands are clawed, and its expression is intense.

The right creature faces left, mirroring the first. It also has pale, blue-tinted skin but features several large, bulging eyes on its forehead and a wide, toothy mouth. Dark, flowing hair swirl around its head as its muscular arms reach toward the center.

In the center, a small, slender, white humanoid robot with a segmented, mechanical appearance stands in a dynamic pose, arms raised upwards. A white, jagged, lightning-like shape strikes from the top center toward the robot's raised hand.

The background transitions from vibrant orange at the top to deep purple at the bottom. Harsh lighting creates deep shadows and bright highlights, emphasizing the textured, organic, and metallic surfaces of the figures.

                BOOK REVIEW - BEE SPEAKER
                👥 Author: Adrian Tchaikovsky

                📅 Started: 2026-07-11
                📅 Finished: 2026-07-11
                💎 Rating: 8/10

Blurb: The end of the world has been and gone. There was no one great natural disaster, no all-consuming world war, no catastrophic pandemic. Only scores of storms, droughts, and selfish regional conflicts. Humanity was not granted a heroic end. Instead, it bled to death from a thousand cuts. But where Earth fell apart, Mars pulled together. Engineered men and beasts, aided by Bees -- an outlawed distributed intelligence -- survived through co-operation, because there was simply no alternative. Fast forward to today. A signal -- 'For the sake of what once was. We beg you. Help.' -- reaches Mars. How could they refuse? A consortium of Martian work crews gather the resources for a mission: a triumphal return to the blue-green world of their ancestors. And now here they are -- three hundred million kilometres from home. And it has all already gone horribly wrong.

Review: Really interesting direction for Tchaikovsky to go in for this series. Human society as we know it basically collapses on Earth into a less theatrical Mad Max situation, but then the Martians are fine, so when they meet again, Tchaikovsky gets to use one of his favourite tropes which I've picked up on so far. One is where people have forgotten what technology does, where the knowledge of how to use electronics dies in various famines and droughts. There were similar themes in the Expert System duology and Elder Race as well. Also I suppose another trope he likes is communication at different levels between two civilisations, which you see a lot in the Children of Time series. This is a mishmash of both.

Anyway, this book has lots of different POVs and I love all of them! The Martians are all cool but I especially love Wells. I think I just have a soft spot for dog bioforms in general. Also loved Cricket, who's a monk of Bees. His participation kinda fell off near the end with the action which was sad. He really reminded me of the monk from Becky Chambers' Monk & Robot duology though! Also loved HumOS and Serval and, even though she wasn't a POV character, I loved Orme! Great cast of characters.

Plotwise, it stands up with the last two books. I think overall this series has been great, each book has felt very different, this one more so than the other two. I also liked how information was revealed to us slowly, given that it opens on a murder. I guess overall I think it's pretty good! Maybe better than Bear Head, I dunno.

Blurb: Welcome to the end of time. It's a perfect day. Nobody remembers how the Causality War started. Really, there's no-one to remember, and nothing for them to remember if there were; that's sort of the point. We were time warriors, and we broke time. I was the one who ended it. Ended the fighting, tidied up the damage as much as I could. Then I came here, to the end of it all, and gave myself a mission: to never let it happen again.

Review: The concept is kinda interesting, and I don't think I've read a time travel book before, but the main character is deeply unlikeable and the humour just doesn't land for me. Even the way he said the exposition was annoying. Actually, there isn't a single character I like. Rare L for this author, I guess.

The Day of the Triffids (Movie Poster)

Title: THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS.
Author: John Wyndham (Author of "Village of the Damned").
Cover Artist: Joseph Smith.

This dramatic, high-contrast poster is dominated by a menacing, dark, plant-like Triffid featuring thick, segmented, tentacle-like limbs twisting upward. At its summit, a textured bulb extends a long, thin, pinkish-red proboscis poised threateningly toward a man. The creature’s surface is rendered with a rough, leathery, organic texture.

In the foreground, a pale, blonde woman in a sleeveless white dress is ensnared within the creature's constricting limbs. To the right, a man in tan clothing falls diagonally toward the bottom corner. The background is a striking, solid, bright yellow, populated by the silhouettes of spindly, skeletal Triffids standing in jagged, upright positions.

The palette utilizes saturated yellow, stark black, and deep, earthy tones to evoke dread. The lighting is flat and graphic, characteristic of mid-century film posters, emphasizing bold silhouetted shapes and extreme contrast.

Top text: "BEWARE THE TRIFFIDS... they grow...know...walk...talk...stalk...and KILL!"

Bottom text: "From the greatest science-fiction novel of all time!", "CinemaSCOPE and EASTMANCOLOR", "STARRING HOWARD KEEL NICOLE MAUREY", "A SECURITY PICTURES LTD. PRODUCTION", "AN ALLIED ARTISTS RELEASE".

Every Friday, I meet a member of the British Fantasy Society and peer deep into their soul (or, at least, a form they filled out). It's too hot for anything serious, so we're in the vicinity of Preston with SFF-comedy writer G.J. Dunn who says he's mostly writing to make himself laugh.

Last night I finished Adrian Tchaikovsky's "Shroud" and I'm still digesting what I think of it, which will probably change over time.

At the moment though, I liked it overall. It kept me interested throughout. It didn't play out quite as I had anticipated (not bad, just different) and the ending was less satisfying than it might have been, but it worked.

Four stars out of 5 maybe?

Winzon grinned evilly. With great slowness and ceremony, he undid the draw-string of his sack and up-ended it, dropping an ogre skull at the brute’s feet!

The massive ogre’s entire demeanor changed in an instant! He backed away, carefully stepping out of reach of Winzon’s ax, even though it was still strapped to his back!

The brute whispered, “Ogre-slayer!”

Admiral Arturius Volt is among the most experienced military commanders the Aleph Corporation has. Tough, disciplined and dedicated to the people, his experienced is written across his weary face.

In his sixties, he is still in excellent health, but time catches up with all (mortal) men, and his white hair and beard reflect his advancing age.

Volt has a stocky build, and has lost some of his athleticism, but he is still a hard man to knock over.

He stands, as defiantly as he always does, rifle in one hand, by his side.

He wears the Aleph Corporation military uniform, black from the waist down, white from the waist up, with the black forming a triangle in the middle where the apex meets his sternum, forming a vague A shape.

The white of the top half denotes his specialty (command). Those of other specialties have different colours, such as engineering being maroon, medical green and media purple (yes, media is a separate specialty: welcome to Aleph).
