Had a great day hiking to waterfalls yesterday in the White Mountains, NH. Six beautiful waterfalls involving three trailheads and four trails. More pics (and a video) to come, but will be hitting the trails again shortly.

    Good day!

Yesterday at the underpass, I turned to take a picture that ultimately didn’t happen. When I turned back around, this was the scene.

If I hadn’t paused, we’d have encountered each other at the other end. The pause also placed the camera in my hand.

    Be everwell.

The scene looks through a highway underpass where a young male deer is walking past where there’s a pathway intersection, trees and fences visible.

Large dark boulders and clumps of wild grass fill the shadowed foreground, leading the eye along a winding alpine stream through the open valley toward the mountain beyond. The monochrome treatment heightens the contrast between the brooding sky and brilliant snow-covered peak, lending the scene a powerful, timeless quality.

        Good day!

After the most mild and dry winter I can remember here, we’re about to close the coldest, wettest spring I can remember.

        It’s 38F (3.3C) this morning.

This is making me a little nervous about our upcoming summer. Hot? Cold? Smoky?

A stunning waterfall cascades down a rocky cliff, surrounded by lush green foliage. The water flows into a tranquil, turquoise pool at the base, with sunlight filtering through the trees.

Had a great day of hiking in the White Mountains, NH yesterday. Hiked up a trail that had lots of beautiful waterfalls, summited one of the peaks, traversed along a contour, then looped back down a different trail. Perfect weather and great scenery made for a perfect day. More pics to come!

The hike last Friday had a long stretch of fun scrambling up steep rock slabs. It was accented by beautiful waterfalls that I climbed along. The upper right pic shows the base of one of the climbs and the lower right pic is a view looking down near the top of another climb. The section was 4,600 ft (1,400m) long with a vertical gain of 1,500 ft (450m) and an average grade of 33%. Fun!!

Can you see the trail here? After climbing up steep slabs of rock during the ascent on last week’s hike in the White Mountains, NH, I was greeted with an expansive field of boulders through which I traversed —- over two miles (3+ km) of boulders like this. Made for slow going. This mountain (Mt Washington) is nicknamed “the rock pile” for good reason!

Photo of trail cutting across field of boulders on side of mountain. The trail is seen as a faint path over the boulders which are covered with green lichen. Boulders on the “path” are turned with their flatter side up to make for easier hiking. Blue sky overhead.

First view! When hiking up a mountainside with the goal of reaching a summit, it is always exciting when first seeing a view of the destination, even while still far away. Here was my first view of the ridge I was hiking to in my recent hike in the White Mountains, NH. I stopped and enjoyed the moment before I continued up the incline.

Check out the roots! The trail that I hiked on in my recent adventure in the White Mountains, NH varied dramatically as I hiked from the trailhead up to the ridge. While much of the trail consisted of either steep rock slabs or a boulder field up high, it looked much more like a trail down low such as in this pic with roots, small rocks, and dirt.

Photo of trail with large roots from trees protruding above the ground. The trail cuts through a green forest.

It must be spring if each day’s weather holds a little bit of everything.

On the day, this day, that my fourth book releases, I’m thinking a lot about my next hike.

Dark cliff faces and jagged rock spires emerge from a thick, billowing sea of cloud that fills the valley between the escarpment walls, with two small birds visible as tiny specks in the pale sky above. The black and white treatment and layered tones of dark rock against luminous white cloud give the image a graphic, almost ink-wash quality reminiscent of classical East Asian landscape painting.

                                          Ocean In The Sky (2024)
Named for the wave like cloud inversion below, I took this image early morning, shortly after golden hour and before the heat of the day burned off the clouds below.

I was motivated to capture a 1:1 ratio image of this location as part of a photographic challenge I set for myself in the region.

Dark, needle-like basalt pinnacles rise from the foreground escarpment edge in sharp silhouette, framing a view across a vast sea of cloud that fills the valleys between multiple receding mountain ridges and serrated peaks stretching to the horizon. The black and white treatment deepens the contrast between the near-black foreground spires and the luminous white ocean of cloud below, with successive ridgelines fading progressively lighter into the pale background sky.

Saturday evening on Wellacre Country Park.

A landscape photo taken in the evening. A buttercup-strewn field dotted with trees glows in the soft light as the sun shines through thin clouds.

We're standing on the path at the extreme right of the picture, by the field. To our left there is a railway embankment which can't be seen for the willow trees thickly lining its base. The trees and the path create a thick, dark, rectangular band on the left margin.

The field stretches across the rest of the picture. It is bright green highlighted golden yellow as the flowers of buttercups rise above the grass. There seems more buttercup than grass.

Small trees dot the horizon and there is a dark green line of woodland on the horizon to the right.

The sky is misty greys and pale blues and creamy whites, layers and bands of overlapping thin clouds. Just above the tallest of the trees on the horizon, just left of centre, the sun is a white circle in the sky.

We’ve also been astonishingly above our normal high. This month has been a complete weather departure for us. It’s crazy.

Today was a special day. As you can see, there's concrete in these photos. This is "The Jungle" as they say, full of apes, not squirrels, and this Jungle in particular, is downtown Statesville, NC.

                                                        Why Statesville, plaid-clad camera-person?
Because Statesville is the new location of my cousin's tattoo parlor, that just opened, and I got to photograph it!

It's called "The Parlor", go on, go there, he's awesome.

While those photos aren't public, Statesville very much is, so here's some photos I took yesterday of downtown.

As usual, my goal isn't as much to document where I am like I'm trying to prove it exists to a speculative audience, I just took a few shots while I was there.

This is a very manecured place. It's part golf course to keep the Tesla and Corvette drivers busy and off of the highways during the day, but if you walk out far enough, you can still find some rustic rather untouched wilderness, my kinda stuff.

I did end up walking out of the woods and finding Mallard lake right in front of me and beyond it, part of the golf course itself, but it was a pleasant surprise to walk out of the woods after half a mile of walking and "BEHOLD... LAKE".

Oh yeah and happy first post on the new instance. Holla back y'all, my ego needs it.

Some of the gardens around the Arboretum. Most of the flowers have come and gone... gotta be faster about these things, still mighty green tho.

In the foreground, there is dark, rocky volcanic terrain with uneven black and reddish-brown stones and sparse dry vegetation. A light-colored dirt road winds through the lower left part of the scene. Standing tall against the horizon are four structures: on the far left, a very tall, slender red-and-white lattice communication tower rises high into the clear blue sky. To its right, three modern white wind turbines with three blades each are positioned along the cliff edge, with the largest one in the center being the most prominent, while two smaller ones stand further to the right. In the background, a vast, deep blue ocean stretches all the way to the horizon under a bright blue sky with just a few light clouds. The overall scene feels open, windy, and remote, with strong natural daylight creating sharp contrasts between the dark rocky ground, the white turbines, and the vivid blue sea and sky.
