These two young Galahs were quiet when photographed, resting between feeding visits from their parents, but were usually atrociously noisy. Seen near Bowen, Qld.

"The day will come when papers
will only tell leaf-stories
of blackbirds' quarrels with sparrows.
Their pages will roll back into trees
and the front page will be bark.
Tabloids will be hundred-winged birds
singing earth anthems.
I'll settle into the buttress root of my armchair
and watch ants swarm
to text me secrets from the soil
adding emojis
of all our lost species ... "

News From The Nest
Pa Stork had the nest all to himself on Thursday night, as both storklets are now old enough to join groups of other young storks and get ready to migrate. Pa Stork has raised the storklets as a single parent and has done an outstanding job.

Had a great day of hiking in the White Mountains, NH yesterday! Climbed up a steep ravine (upper left), then hiked along the ridge to a high point (jagged peaks in upper right) before looping back down. Winds (and freezing wind chill) were as advertised— clocked at average of 45 mph (72 km/h) at closest summit. Wore lots of layers and full wind suit and was just fine. More pics to come! #hiking #mountains #nature

Normally where I'd be taking off every weekend to peruse nature, I've been kicking it with some family lately, and having my pipe on my back porch instead of a log somewhere, but come fall, I will descend upon the changing leaves, and try to find you guys some cool NC mushrooms.
For now, I will be a bit more vocal about news and things online. Rest assured the fire continues.

Stumbled upon an amazing little creature today at Paxton Pits. I have never seen one in my life before. When I saw it, I thought it was a mouse based on its small size (about 20cm). But this is a Least Weasel (or just Weasel in the UK). Its our smallest carnivore.

New Orca fashion for the season...."exploding sunfish"
Personally I preferred the "Attack Yachts" craze, this just seems pointlessly malevolent.

Only about 10% of bee species are social. The other 90% are solitary #bees. They live in individual nests, don’t have a queen and don’t make honey.
