5 Android phones you should buy instead of the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold
Google listened, and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold improves the experience in a handful of ways. But these alternatives might still be better.

Your Pixel's built-in PA system is finally easy to find in Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4
Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 makes Pixel's Voice broadcast feature easier to enable, eliminating the need to jump through hoops.

My app GameMaster Dice https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.duenndns.gmdice&hl=gsw is more popular on @fdroidorg than on Google Play. Therefore, Google telemetry ascertained the F-Droid signing key as the only one eligible for the "Android developer verification program". My own key, associated to my Google Play account, where I publish the app since 2011, is not eligible. Brave new world.
I'm getting a bit frustrated with the various Mastodon apps for Android.
Tusky doesn't support quote posts, and scrolling is janky.
Fedilab scrolling also stutters.
Pachli doesn't group notifications.
Mastodon official doesn't let you swipe between the tabs or customise them much.
I'm on a Pixel 8 Pro - so scrolling performance shouldn't be this bad!
What's your favourite #Android **app** (not website / PWA) for the Fediverse that you personally use on a regular basis?

I really think Google is deliberately sabotaging Aurora Store due to their attempt to silofy #Android.
🆕 blog! “Contactless Payments with GrapheneOS”
Google's monopolistic stranglehold on Android results in poor experience for power-users, and artificially restricts choice for those who have older phones. For example, Google Wallet is the de facto way to use NFC payments on Android. There's one problem though - it only works with Google's Android. If you have…

#Google is going to close down #Android platform, making installing "unverified" apps almost impossible for a regular user. This would completely kill #FDroid, something I rely on to get apps that don't track me, don't show me ads and don't try to exploit me.
If you care about #FreeSoftware, you should care about this. Maybe with enough public uproar, Google like many other corporations before it will back off from this plan. But it certainly won't happen on it's own.
🆕 blog! “"iT woRKs BeTter in THe aPp!!"”
The monkey-punchers at Google never quite seem to finish any of their apps. There's always some useful bit of work left undone, or showstopping bug which remains unfixed, a thousand jagged edges as yet unsolved by the greatest minds of their generation.
I wanted to subscribe to an events calendar. I had a URl. I had my Google™ Pixel® ph…

We're getting pretty tired of Google and Microsoft shifting things underneath of our operations, so if they're going to keep doing that we may as well switch to Linux. I should ask our vendors and account reps if they can publish their #android apps on #FDroid, and you can toohttps://keepandroidopen.org/
ok #infosec #browser #android folks: i have a weird thing happening with #localization:
even though i have android set to EN_CA, it looks like sites are reaching for info of my keyboard to set ―what they think― is my actual language.
this is a multilingual keyboard that i use to write in 4 languages. the fuckers think am monolingually french. i thought this was only a Google/Youtube fuck up but now Trackt is doing it too.
WTAF?!?!?
how can i block this stupid #fingerprinting?

My take from this @cybernews article about an Android toolkit to trick KYC verification significantly differs from theirs!
Them: "...the existence of such tools puts users and organizations at imminent risk."
"Not a tool for the masses"
Me: "Where can I find this amazing #Privacy tool?"
"A tool the masses everywhere need access to ASAP"

Getting rather frustrated that the latest Android strips location EXIF from the web file picker.
Doesn't seem to be any workaround that'll let you pick a photo and have a web browser see the geolocation.
Like, I get the privacy issues, but it is rather frustrating for location-based web apps.
(Before reply-guying, please test if the code you found on a 4 year old StackOverflow post actually works on modern Android, thanks.)

yeah so that whole "google is gonna lock down android in 2027 thing, degoogle your phone now" thing
so are any of you working yet on actually making that possible for anything that isn't 10 high-end models from 5 western brands?
or is everyone just expected to drop $500+ on a new phone and add their old phone to the landfill as yet another piece of e-waste?
(and save me the "well *technically* some low-end models are supported" spiel because if that's your response then you have *not* understood the point I am making here)

Google's sad attempt at closing down #Android under the guise of "safety" has started to roll out.
An "Android Developer Verifier" was just installed on my phone. Of course this was done secretly.
I was able to uninstall it for now, but let's see how long that lasts and/or what things it will break.
Time for a degoogled phone.
Google hammers another, extremely petty nail in the Android Open Source Project’s coffin
The slow but steady march to the grave for the Android Open Source Project continues. Every few months Google hammers another big nail in the coffin of Android as an open source effort, and I've documented them all here on OSNews (nail, nail, nail, nail, nail),
I need a new e-reader but I don't want to be locked in to Amazon, Bookshop.org or any other company. I have seen the Bigme brand e-ink Android tablets offered for about the price of a Kindle. Correct me if I'm wrong-- I can install the apps from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Libby, and Bookshop on this device and read books from each seller, yes? No? #bookstodon #android #kindle #ereader

Jetpack Compose 메커니즘: @Composable의 모든 작동 원리를 파헤치다. by Jaewoong 📖 on Leanpub!
Just an idea for UK/EU digital legislation.
All non-FOSS, proprietary mobile apps must have a web alternative. This will allow people to use services without relying on Apple/Google services and telemetry via a phone web browser of their choice (rather than having to download the app).
Yes - there'll be plenty of cases where this can't happen, but I think it's a good starting point.
