@Quasit I would also urge you to consider science fiction writer Connie Willis's loving tribute/tie-in comic novel To Say Nothing of the Dog, in which a time traveller from the year 2053 gets sent back to 1888 England, by his bosses, both for time off and to recover an artefact that would be later destroyed in the Blitz.

Our protagonist, of course, ends up on a Thames boat journey with companions including a cat whose salvation from drowning nearly destroys the space/time continuum, sundry adventures, and happy outcomes -- along the way passing a certain very familiar boat with three men and a dog. It's a lovely romp, and a fitting tribute. Cosy fiction, brightly written.

Awarded:
Hugo Award for Best Novel (1999)
Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel (1999)

What villain actually had a good point?

              View all responses

Thinking about this automatically took me to movies, or a series. If I had read more, a book. Marking a villain as an aspect of a plot. Good, bad, comedic relief. You know. Formulaic.

And even though I backburnered this one, at least that was my intention, things crept into my noggin making me view this conundrum otherwise. The good, the bad and the comedic relief are not merely consigned to the silver screen – if that is even a thing any more – or to a binge worthy series.

Villain was born of a late Latin word and eventually evolved to mean a scoundrel or an individual with base instincts. At least that is what Al said. So a scoundrel or one with base instincts can share a good point.

              Huh.

I guess there may be a minute glimmer of truth in some of the things they might point out, intended to bring more harm to the target in a deeper fashion. There is only so much damage they can inflict from a physical sense. But way more of the psychological, emotional and spiritual side.

I think villains take aim at a remaining shred of honesty or integrity that lay in the “hero”, to impart even more pain and suffering. Think about it. A villain telling you that you are worthless, have no value and will never amount to anything. And if that already is an element of the hero’s esteem, and the villain knows it, the knife not only went in, it was twisted three hundred and sixty degrees.

Now that is one base, scoundrel.

I used to turn it into two of them by listening and believing what the villain shared. My aim now is to use these instances as a reminder of what I am no longer.

              A base scoundrel.

They may choose to point out my shortcoming and the fallacy of a life ill lived as a way to induce more self-destruction on my part.

But I am not taking the bait and I will no longer succumb to that element of psychological torture.

I will defend myself against the villain.

Their diatribe of hurtful intended good points will be met with the weapon of their surrender.

              Comedic relief.

              Comedic relief.

Today has been very warm - our third of the Summer - and I had a long walk into town.

Several cafés I like to visit for refreshments have collections of old-fashioned teapots. Haven't seen this before - a celebration of the Sherlock Holmes books - filled with Early Gray tea.

Incidentally, the café's door was yellow: lemon entry, my dear Watson!

Hope you sleep well tonight :-)

A china teapot sits on a polished, varnished table top, in front of a plain off-white coloured wall. It is oriented with the handle to the front left, spout to the back right. The teapot is made to look like a row of four, old-fashioned hard-backed books, with a handle, spout and a further small book resting on the top, to act as the lid. On top of this, is a small, old-fashioned building, that acts as the lid's handle.

Two books have their spines on the same face as the handle, two on the same face as the spout. The closest book therefore displays its front cover and spine, and is styled as THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES by ARTHUR C DOYLE. The front cover and spine have the title and author superimposed in buff on an illustration inspired by the story.

It features two men in the bottom, left foreground - clearly Sherlock Holmes, in blue cape and grey hat and Dr. John Watson, in fawn coat and hat, although we only see their backs - peering over a low wall onto a foggy, moonlit moor. On the far horizon is a full moon with a small human figure in silhouette in front of it. In the middle distance is a large black dog, running to the right and howling at the moon.

The title on the spine of the second book is partly obscured by the handle, but the word fragments "...HE ...LLEY ...OF ...EAR" can be seen (i.e. The Valley Of Fear) in dark blue capital letters. The authors name - Arthur Conan Doyle - is written vertically below this, in dark red cursive script. The lid book's spine says SHERLOCK HOLMES. The building of the lid handle has a brown wooden door in and arched frame, several blue leaded windows and is made to look like it is built of grey and white stones, with an ochre tiled roof and green foliage along the base.

The predominant colours are white for the teapot's background, blues and greys for the book covers, off white for the page ends. The handle is shaped like the number 2, but with no base stroke. It has a blue, pink and buff pattern on the handle, and a reddish gold outline detail on both handle and spout.

Elisabeth Sanxay Holding: Il capro espiatorio (Titolo originale: The Innocent Mrs. Duff)
