        New long term photography project: Timefade — prints and animations documenting alpine places and their changes over decades or a century.

        First place completed: Breslauer Hütte and the glaciers of the Gurgler Range. Two images from the same location, separated by 103 years: 1923 and 2026.

        The hut was built in 1882 and has undergone several restorations and extensions. The major peaks from left to right: Großer Ramolkogel, Hinterer Spiegelkogel, Firmisanschneide, Schalfkogel, all between 3400-3550m

        The shrinkage of the glaciers in this view might seem rather small for a time span of a century, but it's worth remembering that most of the volume losses have only been during the past 25-50 years and the melting process itself is exponential and accelerating... Secondly, for a size/scale reference: On the rightmost glacier (Diem-Ferner), the elevation difference between the top edge of the side moraine and the glacier creek is now >100 meters (more than a 30 storey building)...

        It might only be two photos (some more are already in progress), but production involved several weeks of library research (see below) of suitable locations and images, feasibility studies on old & current maps trying to determine photo spots, lenses and viewing angles from where the original pictures were taken, travel and hiking logistics, then taking dozens of photos from different candidate points in situ. Back home after the shoot: Testing different candidate images for best match/alignment potential, tweaking and fine tuning their perspectives, video editing...

                  Photinus pyralis, The Common Eastern #Firefly or locally known here as a “lightning bug”. These #bugs will start flashing around twilight in spring and #summer months in the eastern US. They certainly put on a show. Males will fly in a J-pattern while lighting their abdomens with light-activated proteins to attract females. Females who rest on bushes and trees nearby will flash back at them if interested in mating. I’m not sure if this one is a male or female since it was taken during the day but since it was a rather large one I’d guess female.

                      Tracy Farrington, a one-time roommate who sold me his 1952 Chevy for $6 when he left town, was determined on a career in the movie business. On this roll are photos of his production of a 16mm movie set in the UCR library, with librarians playing the parts.

                        Endless Black Beach

                        The visibility was very good on that late October day. We'd parked at the top of Dyrhólæy and walked to the lighthouse while the wind was quiet, a rarity that week.

                        About 30 km/18.5 mi away was Steinafjall on the southern flank of Eyjafjallajökull. Leading up to it from our viewpoint were several black beaches in a line.

                        A sharp eye could even spot what was left of the Sólheimasandur DC-3 plane wreck, a white dot in the distance.

                        A colour photo of a beach scene. The sky is partly overcast but with areas of clear sky, and cloud shadows are across parts of the view. Sky to land ratio is roughly 50%. The surf line extends from bottom centre just below the viewpoint to middle centre in an almost straight line, splitting the lower half of the shot into two parts - sea and beach. The waves are white-capped and the sea looks dark but this is due to the underlying black sand. The beach gradually changes to yellow scrub grassland on the right, and the snouts of mountains can also be seen. There are patches of frozen water on the right, as well as scattered farm buildings.

                                Color harmonizing between the house and front yard. . I see more and more houses breaking out of the suburban color schemes. I really like it.

                                The front porch and front of a slate blue house are trimmed in purple with a thread of magenta. A flower bed in the front yard echoes the color scheme with tall stemmed magenta mallows, purple lavender flowers and dusty blue green sage (I think Powis Castle wormwood).
