Book cover for the original 1961 hardcover edition of "Stranger in a Strange Land," by Robert A. Heinlein.

Cover art by Ben Feder.

The central image is a photographic reproduction of Auguste Rodin's bronze sculpture "Fallen Caryatid Carrying Her Stone," depicting a nude figure crouched and bowed low beneath a large, rough hewn block of stone that rests upon the left shoulder and upper back, its top edge appearing broken and uneven. The figure kneels with the torso folded forward, arms crossed and drawn tightly inward against the body, and the head lowered toward the bent knees in an attitude of strain and exhaustion. The figure occupies the left and central portion of the cover. The polished surface of the sculpture catches muted highlights along the shoulders, spine, and thighs, while deep shadows pool within the recesses of the crossed limbs, and faint pale flecks speckle the darker areas. The composition is bathed in dark, saturated shades of emerald and forest green. Behind the figure, a mottled, brushstroke textured background shifts from near-black at the outer edges to lighter jade green tones immediately around the body, producing a soft vertical gradient. The title appears at upper right in flowing yellow italic script, arranged across four lines: "Stranger in a Strange Land." At the bottom, the author's name, "Robert A. Heinlein," is printed in widely spaced, pale cream-white capital letters.

Book cover for the 1948 Fantasy Press first-edition hardcover of "Beyond This Horizon," the science-fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein.

Dust-jacket art by A. J. Donnell, whose signature appears vertically along the lower left edge.

The title dominates the upper portion in bold red block capitals across two lines: "BEYOND THIS," then "HORIZON" in larger letters below, set against a dark, smoky sky. The author's name, "Robert A. Heinlein," is rendered in flowing white cursive script at the middle left. The central image is a large hourglass standing on a stepped pedestal, its paired glass bulbs pale and luminous with a soft inner glow, positioned before a monochrome skyline of tall, angular futuristic skyscrapers that recede into a hazy, cloud-filled distance. Within the lower bulb of the hourglass, seated amid the accumulated sand, is a small child, hunched forward and reaching down with both hands to play in the sand that gathers around it. The child is tiny in scale relative to the towering glass vessel that encloses it. The scene is framed by pale stone or concrete ledges along the top and bottom edges, giving the impression of a view seen through an opening. The overall palette is muted and desaturated, favoring olive and sage greens, cool grays, and deep black shadows, broken only by the vivid red of the title lettering. Wisps of mist or cloud drift through the composition, lending a somber, twilight atmosphere. No other legible text appears on the cover.

BOOK REVIEW - THE EXPERT SYSTEM'S CHAMPION
            👥 Author: Adrian Tchaikovsky

            💎 Rating: 6/10

Blurb: It's been ten years since Handry was wrenched away from his family and friends, forced to wander a world he no longer understood. But, with the help of the Ancients, he has cobbled together a life, of sorts, for himself and his fellow outcasts. Wandering from village to village, welcoming the folk that the townships abandon, fighting the monsters the villagers cannot-or dare not-his ever-growing band of misfits has become the stuff of legend, a story told by parents to keep unruly children in line. But, there is something new and dangerous in the world, and the beasts of the land are acting against their nature, destroying the towns they once left in peace. And, for the first time in memory, the Ancients have no wisdom to offer...

Review: It's a little difficult for me to say whether this is better than the first book or not. Handry as a main character is, once again, uninteresting, but I find the concepts presented in this book to be much more interesting. Tchaikovsky presents a humanity re-adapting to a world where they can communicate with each other again, although I would have liked that to be more explored than it was. We also saw some flashbacks from the perspective of the colonists, which was okay. Then we get some interesting non-human intelligence that Tchaikovsky is always good at developing, and I think that was the most interesting part of the book. But I found the plot itself to be a little meandering, despite the book being so short. Plus, the namesake of the book felt a little too much like a side character and not the focus of the story.

I think this could have been a good look at how societies adapt and the AI's response to that, or it could have been a cool novella about humans discovering native beings are sapient, but because it tried to do both, I think it really only went into either one on the surface level. I think overall this series is my least favourite Tchaikovsky I've read.

The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

              Tobor Genn:

Both a Homo gratia and a telepath, he is an outcast among outcasts, and yet he works for the very people who oppress his. He hopes to effect change, but the opportunities are scarce.

Homo gratia were born of multiple generations of colonists adapting to low gravity worlds, leading them to be taller, thinner, and quite graceful.

              ratchman.com/characters/charac

Tobor Genn is tall. Very tall. Nine feet tall tall.

It's a legacy of being born a Homo gratia. Much like Homo sapien, only with a few physiological differences. Firstly, they are taller and thinner, and there are also a few issues such as circulation and heart issues due to less effort being needed in low gravity.

Tobor requires an exoskeleton to support himself in normal gravity. It runs along the length of his arms and legs, and supports his spine. Without it, he would find it difficult to walk around.

Red-haired and with a slightly emaciated face does tend to stand out with his facial features as well.

Tobor is someone who takes his time to think things through, and rarely acts spontaneously, and his pose hints at this, with his hand close to his chin, as if in deep thought.

He is wearing black clothes. Partly because he doesn't like to advertise his presence (his height does that anyway), and it also helps hide the exoskeleton.

At the bottom, the authors' names are centered in a light-tan, serif font: "ROBERT HOLDSTOCK AND GARRY KILWORTH." Behind him, a person is draped in a heavy, cream-colored cloth that covers their head and shoulders, revealing a face with large, wide eyes and heavy brow lines partially obscured by folds in the fabric. Highlighted story illustrating The MYSTERY in ACATLAN by Rachael Marshall and Maverick Terrell.

A dramatic scene against a plain lavender-grey background. At left, a menacing Mexican man in a wide sombrero, tan fringed jacket, and red trousers with a white and green sash strides forward, his arm raised high to crack a long whip that coils in an S-shape above his head. His face is contorted in anger, with a dark moustache; a spur glints on his heel. At right, a frightened dark-haired young woman has fallen to the ground, kneeling and recoiling, one arm raised to shield her face. She wears an off-the-shoulder blue floral gown and a pale fringed shawl, and white stockings and shoes are visible beneath her skirt. Text on the cover: the large "Weird Tales" masthead in white outlined letters at top, with "The Unique Magazine" beneath it; the story title "The MYSTERY in ACATLAN by Rachael Marshall and Maverick Terrell" in ornate lettering upper right; "November 1928" lower right; and author names along the bottom border: "Edmond Hamilton — H. Warner Munn — B. Wallis — Adolphe de Castro — Frank Owen — and Others." The entire illustration sits within a salmon-pink border.

Traumatized by a horrific childhood, Livia has spent one hundred and fifty years trying to blot it out with hedonism.

A catalytic event shakes her out of her stupor and she realises she is not going to survive her family unless she engineers it.

Seen as the spoiled brat of the family, she has more wit and guile than her siblings suspect.

Livia Teel has inherited her beauty from her mother, Catalina Ortranto. Descended from Hispanic lineage, she has long dark hair, and sultry eyes.

Now she has dramatically reduced her substance abuse, her eyes reflect an intensity and intelligence that her family just don't see.

Even her stance hints at her determination, stood in a power stance with one hand on her hip, staring intently at the viewer.

She is wearing a black bodysuit, a minimalist uniform with little in the way of adornments.
