🎬 Watching clips from PAUL NEWMAN movies, trying to decide on tonight's film and was reminded of an almost-encounter with Mr. Newman in Westport, Connecticut in the mid 80s.

Spent a long weekend there with a friend who lived in Westport.

That Saturday, we were shopping for dinner in a small market when I thought I spotted "Him" at the back of the store, selecting produce.

Said to my friend, who also noticed, "Isn't that—?"

He cut me off, and whispered discreetly: "One doesn't disturb Mr. Newman or Miss Woodward. It's considered bad form here."

Never got to see his pale, blue eyes.

Tonight, I'm watching Newman and Geraldine Page in "Sweet Bird of Youth" (1962) based on the Tennessee Williams play.

Page is my favorite American actor.

Julieanne Moore and Tilda Swinton sit on a green couch in a living room. Behind them are photographs. Large globes light the side tables and the coffee table in front of them holds books, a red bowl, and coffee cups.

I went to see Spider-Man Brand New Day at Regal Cinemas Time Square, and without spoiling it, I can say it's marathonic, good fun. The cgi artists made those scenes really pop out, and the practical effects were at least as good (those stunt doubles must have taken a beating.) Acting was good across the board, and with few exceptions the writing was also good inmersive fan service.

I completed #MovieClub on the last day by watching The Conversation (1974) last night, which I had never seen before. Befitting it's subject matter, I found the sound design of the movie to be really impressive, loved the views of 1970s SF, and Gene Hackman was great. Interesting seeing Harrison Ford in something other than a hero in a movie.

Also, this was the first time I've watched a movie on Amazon Prime since they added commercials, and holy crap, does that UX suck balls. I can't believe I have to praise Peacock for how they handle commercials - keep them at the beginning and don't interrupt the fucking movie. It's not like anyone is paying attention to the ads anyways.

I'd read about the film, "1984" in the paper, and I when I saw the title on the marquis at the Paris Theatre, across the street from the Plaza, I bought a ticket and went in.

This is what I saw in the first minutes, and it shook me. Remember, Reagan had just been re-elected and public comparisons to Orwell's vision were common.

"1984" is a brilliant film almost no one talks about anymore, maybe because it seems quaint, when the nightmare has become reality.

This is truly one of my favourite tropes and one of the hottest scifi/fantasy + romance tropes of all time.

Is this because women and other marginalized people are so rarely believed and supported by cis men / members of dominant cultural groups? Yes, it is: we are hungry to be seen and believed.

Want to knock the socks off of marginalized people (or at least this girl)? Listen to us, believe us, and trust our authority and expertise regarding our lived experiences (vs mansplaining, gaslighting, ignoring, etc.)

This is truly top tier hotness and sexiness. 💋

🎬 Saw a reference tonight to "Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling" (1986), the (semi) autobiographical film written, directed by and starring Richard Pryor.

Forty years ago, I contributed to the PR for this movie, on contract to Columbia Pictures. PItching a movie about the addiction and near-death of a 70s comedy giant was a tough sell. A different time.

Hollywood considered it a flop, but CRITERION recognizes the film as a classic and has added it to their Collection.

I'm like 50 years late to this realization because I have avoided horror media for most of my life (I mostly still avoid #horror, but I used to, too). A lot of horror is weirdly (to me) idealistic. If spurned dead lovers, innocent death row executions, tortured children, genocided indigenous communities, aggrieved ecosystems, etc. really could wreak havoc from beyond the grave, cops would never invoke qualified immunity, molesting clergy would choose different occupations, colonizers would become accountants, and abusive parents would throw themselves off cliffs instead of beating their children. There would be a constant force of vigilante justice from the spirit world. It would be capricious, inconsistent, and vicious, but it would have intense effects on our world.

I guess some horror is at least partly a lament about the injustice of our world and a wish for a better one, bizarre and violent as the fickle justice there would be.

(I find myself pretty interested in literary and film analysis of horror though I have the handicap of not wanting to watch or read the media referred to)
