The rain returned during my hike on Thursday. It comes and goes, and varies between drizzle and a strong rain.

More of the same is forecasted.

The rain we’ve had for months is transforming everything.

        Here is a pic from my hike up to the ridge last month in the Presidential Range, White Mountains, NH. Above the tree line, there were significant fields of boulders and the "trail" was marked by cairns like this. I'm planning another trip to the ridge for sometime next month, but approaching from the other side of the ridge (east side). And, yes, more boulders!!

            Went canoeing today on a river north of Boston. Very pleasant, ideal conditions. Saw a nice mix of turtles, swans and their cygnets, a heron, and expansive areas of flowering lily pads. So much nature to enjoy in spite of the river winding through neighborhoods!

                        I hope I never take my landscape for granted. Even when focused on the foreground, the forest and mountains make their presence known.

                        For those who aren’t so fortunate, I want that to always be the case. I know what it is to have nature at a distance.

                                  I dont know how I managed to make it to this side of Stuðlagil canyon and back to the car park with my wonky, arthritic legs last year when there was no place to sit down a bit to give my legs a break along the way, but I did, and it was worth it.

                                        To think that days after I landed in I fell ill, ruining my chances of hiking and exploring this area more - Instead, I had a few hours of proper energy each day where I could explore safely away from others, and not feel like death.

                                        This is one of the only frames I got of the area as a result - but wow do I love it. Would love to return some day!

                                          Looking at photos of when it's been cold while we've travelled to see if it helps to distract from the heat right now. It hasn't.

                                          This was on the sail out along the fjord from Alta last year, passing industrial buildings connected with the Lillebukt mine in the mountainous regions here.

                                          We're on a cruise ship cruising slowly on flat, cold fjord water and looking across to land several hundred metres away which is a rolling, rising rocky mass mostly covered in deep white snow. Black rock pokes through on the most sheer exposed parts of the fjord walls, mostly on the left of view where a mountainous ridge rises above our view. To the right the land is lower, although only relatively, and has a shallower incline towards the top right of view so it's mostly pristine snow packed densely. On the edge of the fjord water, nestled in the crease between the two rising rocky ridges, there are industrial buildings - silos, factory buildings, and long walkways that may protect conveyor systems - but they all appear like toys at this distance and against the scale of the mountainous landscape. We can see a long shield line of concrete to divert avalanches above the industrial complex running parallel with the land mass to the right, and there are rows of what must be other protections from rock fall from the more sheer cliffs to the left. There's no sign of life at this distance. It feels cold and quiet.

                                              Today I share a favourite from a trip years ago into the high mountains of the Assiniboine Range in during fall when the golden larches were at their absolute peak. The golden larches dotting the landscape in golden colouring at every turn.

                                              Highly recommend backpacking this region. It is absolutely stunning.

                                              A classic autumn alpine landscape featuring vivid golden larch trees surrounding a rocky, still lake that reflects a dramatic snow-dusted mountain peak under a partly cloudy sky. Scattered boulders fill the shallow foreground waters, leading the eye back toward the treeline and the imposing peaks beyond. The rich contrast between the brilliant yellow larches, grey rock faces, and fresh snow captures the brief but spectacular larch season in the Canadian Rockies.

                                                        A few years ago when the air quality was pretty bad from distant wild fires, we were out there doing are thing anyway (as the Gin Blossoms said "Nothing like a bad decision says who you are". So, we were up on a road on a hill while the sun rose through the smoke and fog. An old tree grows by the side of the road at a big bend. A crow flew by in the distance. Trying to make lemonade out of the lemons we were given.

                                                              Fledgling (2024)

                                                              I took this image on a road trip down to the in 2024. We were wandering along a trail and I spotted this super overgrown stumpy branch. The sweeping arms of the Maple Vine above appeared like the skeletal bones of a birds wing - and so, to me, it looked like a small fledgling being covered and protected by the wing of a larger being.

                                                              Thick moss drapes every branch and trunk in a lush old-growth temperate rainforest, with ferns carpeting the forest floor in layers of deep, luminous green.

                                                                      Happy ! No such thing as too many waterfalls in last week's adventure in the White Mountains, NH. Here is another one of the falls that we hiked to on the waterfall tour. So beautiful and an easy hike from the trailhead.

                                                                              The Light We Cannot See (2022)

                                                                              Taken on a brisk and cold morning in February, I managed to catch the first moments as the sunlight lit the tops of the trees during sunrise, leaving the rest of the landscape a blue from the cold frosting of the evening.

                                                                              A serene winter woodland scene with frost-covered deciduous trees reflected in a misty, still lake at dawn. A single tall birch tree catches warm golden-pink first light at its crown, standing out against the otherwise cool blue-grey tones of the snow-dusted forest. Low mist drifts across the water's surface, softening the reflection and adding a delicate, ethereal quality to the image.
