                                          The high today was supposed to be about the same as yesterday. It's 10°F warmer (89! Too hot for us!) . Forecasts have gone to blazes. I stepped out to walk the dog at 9 and thought "oh no, it's going to be hot." Monty enjoyed cooling off in the bath.

                                                I spent Sunday morning surrounded by dozens of small Pacific tree frogs and a few Red-legged frogs near a marsh. Just us, no one else around. The tree frogs were very small, about 2 cm (< 1 in.), and well hidden in the vegetation. I tapped the ground with my foot before each step to make sure that I was not stepping on them. A memorable experience.

                                                                                    Two swans were feeding at the edge of the Lee Fields when I stopped. Both had their necks down in the shallows, working the seeds and crumbs in the same posture a second or two apart. It was exceptionally bright so I exposed for the highlights and everything else...

The wall is gray concrete. The windows of the library display some used books on the two shelves. There are stickers in the windows proclaiming this is a free library and a free pantry. At the top a sticker says "Welcome to the 14th Ave NE Sharing Cupboard!" Although the box is a bit roughly cobbled together, it's obviously a good spot. The LFL is surrounded by a green wall of shrubs and low growing ground cover.

                                                                                          Alt...The LFL's house sits at the top of a flight of concrete stairs from the sidewalk up a short hill to the house. The stairs are bordered by extensive St John's wort groundcover on the short hillside. The American Craftsman style bungalow is painted bright yellow with turquoise trim.                                                                                               Yesterday I put a 20mm macro extension on a 50mm lens in order to get in close, and learned that rice ears are connected to the stem by a sort of umbilical chord.

                                                                                              Sleek yellowy green rice ears cling to the main stem of the rice plant by a thin, wiggly umbilical chord. This is a close up of a stem which traverses the frame from top right to bottom left. Broad green leaves form a blurry background. The remaining areas are deep shadow. The ribs on the surface of the leaf are sharp in only a limited area due to the shallow depth of field of the macro lens. The rest of the leaf slides into a smooth, featureless band. There are about 24 rice ears.
