Well into book 3! The bishop is still very much alive. I'm enjoying this story; Cather has such a way with words and is very observant on human nature.

I started reading this because it was recommended to me by an author I met at a café, a locally run business. She was a huge fan of Cather and suggested this one when I asked for recommendations.

Among things, that encounter reminded me of the value of public spaces like this, where people can meet by chance, have enriching conversations, and leave refreshed and the better off mentally, emotionally, and spiritually (by which I mean as human beings relating to other human beings).

Cather devotes a whole chapter to describing Acoma, and it's bringing back memories. She describes their church as follows:

"At the very edge of the mesa, overhanging the abyss so that its retaining wall was like a part of the cliff itself, was the old warlike church of Ácoma, with its two stone towers. Gaunt, grim, grey, its nave rising some seventy feet to a sagging, half-ruined roof, it was more like a fortress than a place of worship."

I don't know if this description was ever accurate (I suspect Cather did do her research), but the church I saw there was something lovely and brilliant, an open space with images of crops around the walls, IIRC. To me it was an image of life itself.

Okay, I kind of see why Cather described the church at Acoma the way she did: It's a symbol of Euroamerican oppression of the people there. The building that I saw, by contrast, reflected the spirit of the Acoma people and culture, as our guide explained it to us, and they were very proud thereof. She (our guide) told us it was as much an expression of the historical Acoma religion as of Christianity.

The title "Astounding" appears in large yellow text, with "SCIENCE FICTION" in all-caps directly below it. The top right corner contains "January 1957 • 35 Cents" in white font. The top left features a minimalist white geometric line diagram.

The background features a colossal red-orange planet filling the upper right quadrant. Behind it, a blazing sun creates an intense yellow-white glowing crescent that illuminates the planet's edge and the surrounding fiery orange sky. Thick, dark, billowing storm clouds in charcoal and crimson crowd the mid-ground, with faint, jagged streaks of white lightning flashing down toward the horizon.

In the foreground, a choppy sea with rolling red and black waves carries a large futuristic vessel. The ship is styled like a military cruiser, rendered in shades of cream and light red. It features open decks crowded with numerous small figures dressed in uniform red clothing. At the left stern of the vessel, a massive, cylindrical jet propulsion unit with a swept-back vertical fin is mounted horizontally. At the bottom center, the text "Get Out of My Sky BY JAMES BLISH" is printed in bold white capital letters. The artist's signature "VAN DONGEN" is visible in the lower-left corner.

To vex the world. Jonathan Swift’s Frustrated Humor

On the three-hundredth anniversary of Gulliver’s Travels, Swift’s satire of his own society is remarkably relevant.

Avignon as Threat: How a Medieval Myth Became a Modern Weapon

For centuries, the Avignon Papacy has been portrayed as a period of corruption, weakness, and French domination over the medieval Church. But a modern political controversy involving the Pentagon and the Vatican has revealed how this powerful historical myth still shapes public perceptions today.

You’re promoting a thing that dragged you to hell and you dragged back. You’re promoting a successful enterprise in human endeavor. And beyond that, you’re promoting the idea that this beautiful thing you made, these words you ordered, these ideas you successfully put to a page, will resonate with other human beings. You’re promoting your belief that you have made a thing that will fill others with joy, grief, and/or inspiration. You’re promoting the idea of human connection, which we need so badly right now."

I tossed away 25 years of habit pumping out programming projects on the daily so I could knuckle-down to writing Nomad: Wanderer in the because the world is so compelling, so full of detail, and so well suited to the medium that I know it will give you something that is so much more rich in texture and humanity than the endless stream of attention-sapping sound-bites that makes up the majority of reading we do online nowadays.

There is literally no ulterior motive to the content of this book, unlike a social media feed where often the content -- no matter how positive and uplifting -- is secondary to the farming of views/clicks/ads/data, etc.
