                                    As The Fires Settled (2022)

                                    During wildfire season in 2022 in was partially burnt and ravaged. Shortly after the fires reduced again I was able to drive through the park and take some photographs of the changed landscape - it was heartbreaking. Of course, worse years were coming the following summers... This image is one of the hillsides, partially burnt away with the dead remnants a deep brown red.

                                    A jagged, snow-dusted rocky mountain peak towers above a deep valley in Jasper National Park, Alberta, its sheer grey cliff faces catching soft directional light against a partly cloudy sky. The surrounding slopes tell a sobering story of wildfire recovery, with dark, fire-scarred hillsides in the foreground giving way to patches of surviving evergreen forest in the valley below, where a misty river winds through the shadows.                                                         Fragments of Yesterday.

                                                        This is (or was) the historic roundhouse of the former railway depot in Rheine, Germany. At its peak, the massive industrial complex stretched over 3.9 kilometers straight through the city. It was a legendary place for train enthusiasts - in September 1977, a festival was held right here to celebrate the official farewell to DB's steam locomotives.

                                                        Sadly, history was turned to dust. In late 2020 (just a few months after I captured this shot) the #abandoned roundhouse and its remaining buildings were completely demolished. Looking at these shattered pieces on the floor, surrounded by #IndustrialHeritage and #Decay, now feels incredibly symbolic.

                                                        Glad I got to see and document a piece of this industrial heritage before it vanished forever.

                                                              On the Navajo Loop at Bryce, the trail threads a gap barely wide enough to look up through. Partway up sits one of the Two Bridges, its namesake. But it was the small tree on the canyon floor that caught me, green against all that stone.

                                                                    I don't know if you'll believe me, but I did not enhance these colors at all. It's a colorful building on the corner of 17th and Broadway that houses a Pret a Manger. Between the angles, the big Pret sign and trees I have never managed a good picture of it. However, a small portion of it can make for something interesting

And that means fog covers half the city and threatens to roll over another 25% within the next 2 hours. In thiis photo, the tip of Sutro Tower peeks out from thick bank of fog covering Twin Peaks and Mount Sutro. Above Sutro Tower, there's a bit of clear blue sky... except for one swirl of fog that reaches up and arcs high above Noe Valley. Our house, in Noe Valley, sits 2-3 blocks in front of the edge of the fog. Sometime between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m., the house will be in the fog. This is how it goes most days, from mid-May until September and occasionally throughout the other months of the year.

                                                                                Good day!

                                                                                I think this is the day.

                                                                                I’ve longed toyed with the idea of leaving home on foot, hiking the paved trail to Mount Sentinel, and climbing it.

                                                                                It’s a small peak, the hike to it long, but flat. The endeavor as a whole, though, is ambitious. 🤔

                                                                                  Quick question to the hive mind of experienced and NOT SO experienced photographers out there on the fediverse.

                                                                                  I'm about to make a very long video to talk about the kinds of things that someone might want to know if they were just starting out in photography. Imagine a relative gave you their old DSLR camera and some lenses, and you decided "yes this could be fun!"

                                                                                  What things would you want to know when starting out?

                                                                                  I had this conversation with someone a few years ago, and didn't make notes at the time. But it did inspire me to make a video today. I have a few ideas. But maybe some of my peeps would like to share their thoughts too?

                                                                                      The interior of a typical Norwegian wooden church from the 1830s, featuring doors in front of the pews, a two-storey gallery and a pulpit-altar (a characteristic Norwegian feature from the 19th century). The wooden walls and columns are painted teal, whilst the panelling and the walls of the two galleries are painted in a pink marble-effect finish. The columns in the nave and around the pulpit altar are also painted in a marble-effect finish (those around the altar in pink). A pale pink carpet runs from the entrance to the altar. A brass-coloured chandelier hangs from the ceiling. The church is one of the largest in the region and has a total of 700 seats … just to put that into perspective when compared with churches in other countries.
