Seven ingredients. Feeds three. Under nine dollars. Under ten minutes.

Boil three packs of udon two minutes and save a cup of the water. In the pot: three tablespoons white miso, three of butter, two grated garlic cloves, a splash of soy. Whisk the noodle water in until it goes glossy. Fold the spinach through, return the noodles, crown each bowl with a soft egg.

The starch in that saved water is the whole trick — it's what turns miso and butter into a sauce instead of a puddle. Nobody sold you that. A cook figured it out and told somebody.

                        She turned down the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Twice. She turned down the statue Tennessee wanted to stand up for her at the Capitol.

                        She died Tuesday in Nashville at 80, and the flag over the White House came down to half-staff on the order of the man whose medal she declined. In 2005 she put "Travelin' Thru" on a road movie about a trans woman and did it without a press tour about how brave she was being. In 2011 she apologized personally to a woman told to turn her marriage-equality shirt inside out at Dollywood. Sixty years of the same three words in the same accent, said in rooms where saying them cost her something.
                        They will spend this week claiming her. She spent sixty years politely declining them.

                                    The otter day during a private photo tour, we saw several rafts of sea otters. Some otters were caring for their pups, others were grooming or sleeping. They all looked very relaxed.

                                      Thistledown.
                                      A light rain fell as I walked through some fields near my home and I began to notice tiny, jewel-like droplets were gathering on the thistledown still clinging to the plants.
                                      I photographed them with my constant companion, the TG-7, and, when it came to processing the RAW files, I decided not to use any noise reduction as I really liked the organic, film grain-like look of the noise created by the tiny sensor in the low light.

                                                                                Another house goes from greige to bright

                                                                                A northwest contemporary split level house is being repainted in bright turquoise with white trim. You can see a section under a window in the older gray color. The house has a large deck with white railing over the garage. There is a person is a yellow shirt and gray shorts on a stepladder with their back to us busily painting the garage door white. The main level of the house facing the steeply sloping street is landscaped with various shrubs, and you can see a couple of painter's ladders positioned for additional work. The sky above is a bright blue.

                                                                                  Last week, as the sun rose on the coast of Vancouver Island, we observed a black bear getting several salmon for breakfast. I have a good appetite in the morning too.
