Weird Tales vol 8 number 1 (July 1926) - featured story: Through the Vortex by Donald Edward Keyhoe. Cover art by E. M. Stevenson.

The magazine title "Weird Tales" appears in bold white sans-serif lettering across the top, with "The Unique Magazine" in a thin white cursive script below it, set against a solid black border. The central illustration is dominated by intense red, orange, and yellow flames that engulf the entire background in a swirling inferno.

Looming at the top of the scene is a monstrous dragon-like creature with greenish-brown scaled skin, curved ridged horns, large dark eyes, an open snarling mouth showing pointed white fangs, and a pink tongue. Its long serpentine neck coils downward from the upper left.

In the lower left foreground stands a young woman with long dark wavy hair, her face turned upward in shock, red lips parted and cheeks flushed pink. She wears a loose cream and pale yellow off-shoulder gown tied at the waist with a blue cord, her hands crossed defensively over her chest.

On the right, a dark-clothed man stands amid the flames, aiming a small black pistol upward at the creature with his right arm fully extended. He wears a dark long-sleeved shirt and trousers; his face is in shadow.

Tall yellow grass appears at the bottom. In the lower left corner, dark blue text reads "July 1926 25¢". In the lower right, the title "THROUGH the VORTEX" appears in shadowed black block letters with "DONALD EDWARD KEYHOE" in yellow beneath.

                                Ris an do-dhèanta
Pàdraig MacAoidh

Tha sinn air a bhith ri rudan do-dhèanta a-rithist.
A’ crochadh san adhair, a’ feitheamh diog, tiotag, linn,
nas fhàide nas àirde na bu chòir a bhith comasach.
Chaidh leintean-T a dhèanamh dhinn mus do landaig sinn.

Tha sinn air fhaighinn tharais air na rudan as miosa,
a’ coiseachd nam mìltean fada sin – coig ceud, coig mìle –
gus cnàmhan agus buill-nasg a chur ceart, gus ar corragan a shìneadh,
agus mion-car a chur air an t-saoghal, tharais air a’ bhàr.

O agus chum sin ar n-anail nar milleanan,
air bhoile le chèile, a’ coimhead bàla a’ tùirling
na àrc àbhaisteach mìorbhaileach coileanta
agus a’ tuiteam, meath mar bhogha-frois, dhan talamh.

Seadh, rinn sinn rudan do-dhèanta. Ach a-nis –
ann am Miami, Boston, ge b’àit – tha againn rin dèanamh
a-rithist. Agus an uairsin, yes sir, nì sinn boogie,
ri òran sam bith a tha sinn ag iarraidh.

                                At the Impossible
Peter Mackay

We’ve been at the impossible again. Levitating.
Hanging in the air one, two seconds, an age,
longer and higher than should be possible.
The T-shirts were printed before we’d hit the ground.

We have recovered from the worst of times,
walking long miles – five hundred, five thousand –
to wrest bones and ligaments back to fitness
and tip the world over with the last skelf of skin.

And we have held a million breaths
in frantic unison, watching a ball tumble
in its everyday, humdrum perfect parabola,
to fall plump as a rainbow back to earth.

O we’ve been at the impossible but must now –
in Miami, Boston, anywhere, anyhow –
do it all over again. And then yes sir, we shall boogie,
absolutely, to whatever song we choose.

Nevertheless, things change when businesses are brought into her small community and she finds one of the owners, Hadley Grace, at her door asking for a favor. Jane is absolutely appalled. She isn’t a big fan of capitalism and has an issue with large corporations preying on the average person for their own personal gain.

Hadley does her best to convince Jane to assist her, and in the process, she ends up working on Jane’s farm. Despite a rocky start, the two of them grow closer and end up forming a bond. However, as soon as things seem like they are going well, Jane begins to reflect on her past relationship and the damage that occurred during that time. She worries that getting closer to Hadley might mean sacrificing her own independence, and this begins to create a wedge between the two of them until Jane finally does something that finally scares Hadley off.

Alone, Jane realizes that she might be leaving a chance at true love behind. She decides to go on an adventure to reexperience her past, allowing her to work through the grief and trauma that is holding her back from moving on.

John Burnside

Like all those red-faced boys
in brand-new football strips

dribbling a ball around
in a circle of streetlight

or practicing their footwork
in the park

in Cowdenbeath, Arbroath,
Kirkcudbright, Govan,

I wanted the triumph of willpower
over strength

grace over
money

and stood with my head in my hands
for the longest time

when we missed
that goal,

still blaming no one, hopeful
to the last,

aware of how often, in life,
the impossible happens.
