The Adulterous Wife by Albert Camus is a short story about a middle-aged woman, Jeanine, who is trapped in an emotionless marriage. The story is included in a collection published as a book titled Exile and the Kingdom. As written by Camus, while on a business trip in Algeria with her husband, the fictional Jeanine has this experience after climbing the long staircase of a ruined castle to view the horizon:

“In the advancing afternoon, the light softened gently; the crystalline sharpness dissolved. At the same time, in the heart of a woman brought there by chance alone, a knot tightened by years, habit, and boredom was slowly loosening. She looked at the nomad encampment. She had not even seen the men who were living there, nothing was moving among the black tents, and yet she could think only of them, of their existence, which she had hardly known of until today. Homeless, remote from the world, they were a handful of men wandering through the vast territory her gaze had discovered, and which was nonetheless only a trivial part of a still greater space, whose dizzying course stopped only thousands of kilometers farther south, where the first river finally waters the forest. Since the beginning, on the dry earth of this measureless land scraped to the bone, a few men ceaselessly made their way, possessing nothing but serving no one, the destitute and free lords of a strange kingdom. Janine did not know why this idea filled her with a sadness so sweet and so vast that she closed her eyes. She only knew that this kingdom had been promised to her from time immemorial, and that it would never be hers, never again, except perhaps in that fleeting moment when she opened her eyes once more on the suddenly still sky and its streams of fixed light, as the voices rising from the Arab town fell suddenly quiet. It seemed to her that the turning Earth had simply stopped, and that from now on no one would grow old or die. Everywhere, henceforth, life was suspended, except in her heart, where at that very moment someone was weeping with pain and wonder.”

Cover art by Ben Feder.

The central image is a photographic reproduction of Auguste Rodin's bronze sculpture "Fallen Caryatid Carrying Her Stone," depicting a nude figure crouched and bowed low beneath a large, rough hewn block of stone that rests upon the left shoulder and upper back, its top edge appearing broken and uneven. The figure kneels with the torso folded forward, arms crossed and drawn tightly inward against the body, and the head lowered toward the bent knees in an attitude of strain and exhaustion. The figure occupies the left and central portion of the cover. The polished surface of the sculpture catches muted highlights along the shoulders, spine, and thighs, while deep shadows pool within the recesses of the crossed limbs, and faint pale flecks speckle the darker areas. The composition is bathed in dark, saturated shades of emerald and forest green. Behind the figure, a mottled, brushstroke textured background shifts from near-black at the outer edges to lighter jade green tones immediately around the body, producing a soft vertical gradient. The title appears at upper right in flowing yellow italic script, arranged across four lines: "Stranger in a Strange Land." At the bottom, the author's name, "Robert A. Heinlein," is printed in widely spaced, pale cream-white capital letters.

Dust-jacket art by A. J. Donnell, whose signature appears vertically along the lower left edge.

The title dominates the upper portion in bold red block capitals across two lines: "BEYOND THIS," then "HORIZON" in larger letters below, set against a dark, smoky sky. The author's name, "Robert A. Heinlein," is rendered in flowing white cursive script at the middle left. The central image is a large hourglass standing on a stepped pedestal, its paired glass bulbs pale and luminous with a soft inner glow, positioned before a monochrome skyline of tall, angular futuristic skyscrapers that recede into a hazy, cloud-filled distance. Within the lower bulb of the hourglass, seated amid the accumulated sand, is a small child, hunched forward and reaching down with both hands to play in the sand that gathers around it. The child is tiny in scale relative to the towering glass vessel that encloses it. The scene is framed by pale stone or concrete ledges along the top and bottom edges, giving the impression of a view seen through an opening. The overall palette is muted and desaturated, favoring olive and sage greens, cool grays, and deep black shadows, broken only by the vivid red of the title lettering. Wisps of mist or cloud drift through the composition, lending a somber, twilight atmosphere. No other legible text appears on the cover.

Alt...Book cover for the 1948 Fantasy Press first-edition hardcover of "Beyond This Horizon," the science-fiction novel by Robert A.
