The Two Habits That Improved My Life the Most: Reading and Setting Boundaries.

The biggest changes in life often come from the smallest habits. For me, reading and learning to say "no" without guilt have transformed the way I think, protect my peace, and pursue my goals. Here's why these simple habits have made such a lasting difference. [SENSITIVE CONTENT]

What’s one habit that has improved your life the most?

We often think that changing our lives requires one big breakthrough—a better job, more money, or a lucky opportunity. But the truth is, our lives are usually shaped by the small things we do consistently.

When I look back at the habits that have had the greatest impact on my life, two stand out above all others: reading and learning to say no—and truly meaning it.

Neither of these habits transformed my life overnight. They took time, patience, and practice. But together, they changed the way I think, make decisions, and value myself.

Reading Changed the Way I See the World

The habits you repeat every day shape the life you live tomorrow

Reading has become one of the greatest investments I have ever made in myself.

Every book I read exposes me to new ideas, different perspectives, and lessons that would have taken years to learn through experience alone. Books have taught me about resilience, personal growth, relationships, leadership, and the importance of self-discipline.

There have been moments when I felt confused or discouraged, and a single chapter from a book gave me the clarity I needed. Sometimes the right sentence arrives exactly when you need it.

Reading has also taught me that no matter how much I know, there is always something new to learn. That mindset keeps me curious and reminds me that growth never truly ends.

              Learning to Say No

Not every “yes” is worth your time

For a long time, saying “no” felt uncomfortable.
Like many people, I worried about disappointing others or being misunderstood. I often agreed to things I didn’t really want to do simply because I didn’t want to hurt someone’s feelings.

But over time, I realized something important: every time I said yes to something that didn’t align with my priorities, I was saying no to my own peace, time, and goals.

Learning to say no wasn’t about becoming rude or selfish. It was about setting healthy boundaries.

Now, when something doesn’t align with my values, drains my energy, or distracts me from what truly matters, I politely decline.
And I don’t feel guilty about it anymore.

              Meaning What I Say

The most important part wasn’t just learning to say no—it was meaning it.

People quickly notice when your boundaries are weak. If you constantly change your mind because you fear disappointing others, your “no” eventually loses its meaning.

I’ve learned that respecting myself means standing by my decisions.
That doesn’t mean being harsh or inflexible. It simply means understanding that I don’t owe everyone an explanation for protecting my time, energy, or peace of mind.

A firm but respectful “no” is often healthier than a reluctant “yes.”

              Small Habits, Big Results

Looking back, these habits may seem simple, but their impact has been enormous.

              Reading has strengthened my mind.
Saying no has protected my peace.
Meaning what I say has built my confidence.
None of these habits required money or extraordinary talent. They only required consistency.

If you’re looking for one place to start improving your life, begin with a habit that helps you grow and another that helps you protect your growth.

Because the quality of your life is often determined not by the opportunities you receive, but by the habits you choose to practice every single day.

What habit has improved your life the most? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Quasit's Daily Book Recommendations: "Whipping Star" (1970) by Frank Herbert

                      Age Range: Adult
                      Genre: Science Fiction

Frank Herbert is synonymous with the "Dune" series. Although don't make the mistake of confusing him with his talentless son Brian, who has been churning out absolute CRAP under the "Dune" name for years; if you want to know what he and his cretinous co-author have been doing to Frank Herbert, Penny Arcade put it really well in this strip: penny-arcade.com/comic/2003/10

But Frank Herbert wrote a lot more than the six Dune books. The ConSentiency Universe was a much shorter series. It consists of several short stories about saboteur extraordinary Jorj X. McKie, plus the novels "Whipping Star", and "The Dosadai Experiment".

"Whipping Star" is more readable and less confusing than Dune–but it still take some deep thought. Saboteur McKie has been assigned to a mission of utmost urgency: a Caleban, one of a mysterious race of beings who provide interstellar jumpdoors (teleportation) to other races, is being tortured to death as part of a contract made with an insane and incredibly wealthy woman. When that Caleban dies, every being who ever went through any of her jumpdoors–most of the population of the galaxy, human and otherwise–will die.

Communication with the Calabans is incredibly difficult, as they live on a level of existence far beyond normal comprehension. Puzzling out the Caleban's conversations with McKie is part of the challenge (and the fun) of the book.

[The Caleban radiated. Its communication registered in the sentient mind as sound, but the ears denied they had heard anything. It was the same order of effect that Calebans had on the eyes. You felt you were seeing something, but the visual centers refused to agree.

                      "I hope my . . . ah, I didn't disturb you," McKie said.

"I possess no referent for disturb," the Caleban said. "You bring a companion?"

"My companion's outside," McKie said. No referent for disturb?]

There's also a core of •feeling• to the book that's deeply affecting. There's even some dry and witty humor! I liked it enough to read the other ConSentiency stories and "The Dosadai Experiment". They were well worth the time.

"Whipping Star" is available as an ebook, audiobook, and physical book. You can also borrow it for free from the Internet Archive:

I've said here, *Audrey loves to be loved.*

I just made a note to get into that in WIP book 3.

Book 2 says *You don't want to be in Audrey's way, when she's on a justice rampage.*

When she feels wronged, she plays to win.

Why? Nature selected for valuing family and community first. With a side order of anger and fighting, or that love would've been wiped out by raiders.

There's no canon of MCs leaving NYC in the first 4 books. SCs fly in on airlines.

In WIP book 5 -- working title *Escape from New York*, but Audrey probably won't get an eye patch -- first they fly to a resort.

When a move comes up, MCs realize they've been living in the city so long that neither has a driver's license.

Long distance means subway, rather than walking or running.

                                Updates from a Writer

The amount of time I have on my hands now that my nights aren’t spent writing or editing ECHOES is more than I know what to do with. After a few people found their way to the Hartprints Bookshop, I decided to give it a much needed makeover.

While the books are available anywhere, including Kindle and Amazon and brick and mortar stores, ordering from me gets you free shipping and some goodies thrown in. So, I’ve made the page a lot cleaner and easier to navigate. I’ve also added two specials: one is the opportunity to purchase an ebook for $3.99 and the other is a BOGO offer: buy one paperback and receive one free. Good for any of the 16 books. I’d love for you to take a look at the shop and let me know what you think! (while you can view the page on mobile, desktop works better because I’ve used columns)

The other thing I did was update the (very long) video on that page that incorporates Whisperroot and Echoes. It is very long, but gives you a very good idea of what you might find within the pages of any of the books.

I write for connections. I genuinely believe that your story matters–and it really doesn’t matter what it is. People who know me can’t talk about books as much as I can and so hearing from readers really means more to me than I can express. Each review or comment or email or any sort of communication, really, makes me smile and reminds me that kindness is real. If you’ve read something and would like to share, reviews on Amazon are super helpful… and I read every single one!

                                Also…

A shadowy character’s been hanging out in the corners of my mind already… not sure who it is yet but the setting is certainly interesting… I’ve been reading up on groups of people I didn’t know existed… from, like, the 12-1400 era… I’m thinking a trip to the library is in store soon..

Is it me, or latest Kindle for PC lost accessibility? At least with JAWS, it's impossible to read through a Braille display, as we could read before (virtual cursor, with arrow keys) you basically have speech working, it reads a page whenever you press the Tab key, a page read all at once. But if you want to stop line by line, or read in Braille, no way.

Blurb: There has always been a darkness to Ilmar, but never more so than now. The city chafes under the heavy hand of the Palleseen occupation, the choke-hold of its criminal underworld, the boot of its factory owners, the weight of its wretched poor and the burden of its ancient curse. What will be the spark that lights the conflagration? Despite the city's refugees, wanderers, murderers, madmen, fanatics and thieves, the catalyst, as always, will be the Anchorwood - that dark grove of trees, that primeval remnant, that portal, when the moon is full, to strange and distant shores. Ilmar, some say, is the worst place in the world and the gateway to a thousand worse places. Ilmar, City of Long Shadows. City of Bad Decisions. City of Last Chances.

Review: I'm very impressed that Adrian Tchaikovsky could pull off fantasy this well. I only know him from his science fiction, but this is way better than I thought it would be!

This is a somewhat strangely written book where the point of view jumps between a dozen different characters, never really lingering on one, but we see more of them through the eyes of other characters as they meet each other. The story itself is set in a city under occupation in something similar to late 1800s or early 1900s "technology" or the magic equivalent. There's the colonialism of the Pallaseen, the unions in the factories, the standardisation of magical weaponry, the radicalised students of Gownhall, and various resistance groups resisting the occupation. As well as a dark and dead part of the city called the Reproach, and a forest that is a portal to other worlds.

I think Tchaikovsky manages to balance all of these competing factions and places and interests using the POVs in a cool way, and I really loved it. The resistance itself being fractured, the politics of refugees, and the empire's ideology being a pale reflection of something else. All felt very realistic! This book also has a great and colourful cast of characters, and I don't think a single one felt like some kind of caricature. Each one was tied deep to the city or the people around them. My favourite by far was Ruslav though, what a journey he went on.

I think, as a reading experience, it did take a while to get going. Each POV is really interesting, and the last third of the book is spectacular, but I found the setup to get there a little meandering. I think if I had read this another time, I might have even DNF'd it near the start. But pacing aside, this book is incredible. Very much looking forward to the next one!
