100 Things Vikings Fans Should Know and Do Before They Die by Mark Craig

To my wife, Tammy; daughters, Jessica and Caleigh; and mom, Iona; thanks for helping me in so mant ways—once it finally hit me that 100 chapters is a lot of chapters. Caleigh, you no longer have to help me count them down. To my readers over the many years, thanks, and I hope you enjoy the book.

A family member retires from teaching this summer.

By chance I found the perfect gift in a local book-lend.

First published as 'Boners' in 1931 (I had an ancient wire-haired Scottish shop teacher in grade school who still used the word that way; never failed to leave us smirking and howling it later: 'SON YOU PULLED A BONER ON THE LATHE!!'), it's as current as ever and some of the observations are rather clever.

Let us compare the Constitution to a boat with Washington, James Madison and the several others fishing from it with the states as fishes. Some of these little suckers got hooked right off but New York and Virginia, the bass, put up a hard fight in which Patrick Henry took Virginia's part against James Madison. Patrick Henry won but the line was too strong and he along with Virginia came aboard. New York was caught easily and only Rhode Island remained. She would not be caught so they threatened to dynamite the pool, that is, to treat her as a foreign country, so she bit and the thirteen states stood a “New Nation under God.”

Horace Greeley was the worst defeated candidate ever elected.

I preordered it from Bruce McKenzie Booksellers in Palmerston North and it arrived yesterday, beautifully gift wrapped. To match the bruise palette of the beautifully designed cover (image by Kirsty Porter), I’ve gone with a Cali Black Pale Ale from the Mill as I escaped from the rain at the Bendigo Hotel. “What I am looking for / and what you are looking for / are not the same thing.
