20240511 | The Northern Lights from Oregon

Came back home from a t4t event and saw that here on fedi that there was aurora activity!

Never before had seen aurora and was curious and excited (couldn't make anything out from our apartment).

it was probably 2200 and i asked my then partner, wanna go see if we can see it?

i think we were both kinda eepy, but we decided it was a go and so i grabbed the photo gear and we headed out.

20 or so minutes into driving down I-84 eastbound, we could see it clearly out the car windows!

kept driving at least another hour to try to find a spot to capture it further out in the gorge.

there were so many ppl out and by this time it was almost midnight.

stopped at a little spot that actually overlooks I-84 and set my manual 9 mm f/2.8 (sold this lens a while ago) on my Fuji X-T4, got focus, and took this shot.

we kept driving another hour or so east and ended up in cascade locks down by the park and got some lovely time together just enjoying the colors.

headed home and i think we got home around 0300 or a smidge after iirc.

      Most of my friends have heard me go "whoaaaaaaa the light is incredible!! oh my god!!" and this day was no exception!

      I couldn't help myself by boosting the reds just a bit in post, but it was really really red-orange in real life

                      This makes me happy. My mother-in-law has very advanced Alzheimer’s but until recently could still knit several baby hats a day. My wife entered one in the local fair and it won 4th place! Once we get the actual ribbon and the $1 in winnings we will take it to her.

It is pretty. The fog creates beams of sunlight spreading out into the neighborhood. And bonus points! There's a flock of 19 pigeons and one airplane flying through the scene. How cool is that? Note: you might wonder what the hell I was doing up at that ungodly hour. Peeing, okay?
