Weird Tales vol 12 number 01 (July 1928) - featured story: The Witches' Sabbath by Stephen Bagby. Cover art by C. C. Senf.

A humanoid figure and a wearing a coarse, textured brown hooded garment leans heavily over a pale-skinned woman. The woman is tilted backward in a limp posture, her head hanging down toward the bottom of the frame, displaying long, wavy light brown hair that cascades downward in thick, uneven strands. Her arms are raised and slightly bent at the elbows with fingers spread, and she wears a white, translucent fabric draped loosely over her torso and a dark blue skirt that falls in heavy, opaque folds around her legs. The hooded figure grips the woman's waist firmly with one hand, showing thick fingers, while the other hand, with visible white knuckles and darkened fingernails, is positioned near her upper body. The figure wears dark brown boots that reach mid-calf, featuring thick soles and rugged textures. The scene is set within a heavy stone archway constructed of irregular, grey blocks with visible cracks and rough, pitted surfaces, with dark, shadowy interiors visible behind the figures through the opening. Thick, green vines with small, pointed leaves and tangled, woody stems hang from the top of the stone structure, partially obscuring the upper edge of the masonry.

Cover reveal! Here, I talk about the inspiration for the cover of my novella, The Blossoming of the Big Tree, and the process of making it.

I know, it's weird to change the cover six days before release, but I thought I should give it a new look, as the earlier version had a plainer background. I hope you enjoy this one, and hope it's not confusing since you are used to seeing the green stuff.

The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

            Conn Teel:

Born on Earth before it became a poisonous husk, he has lived for over two thousand years in a succession of clone bodies.

Now the head of the dynasty that rules the Teel Corporation, Conn dominates with cruelty and capriciousness not seen since ancient Earth history.

If only the good die young, meet the polar opposite.

            ratchman.com/characters/charac

Conn Teel, being the egomaniac and hedonistic individual he is, dresses in a luxuriant fashion. Pictured here, he is adorned with a dress uniform similar in style to Imperial Russia.

His long black hair and handlebar moustache surround a visage with a contemplative expression, reflecting his sharp intelligence. Though he could choose any body he wishes, he sticks with his own, as any narcissist would.

Whilst not exactly handsome, he does possess a malevolent charisma that does disarm the unwary.

He stands making a forceful point, his index finger extended straight up as he declares loudly: "I AM the dynasty." as a rebuke to his worthless (in his opinion) children.

The cover of Richard Matheson’s *The Shrinking Man*, featuring art by Mitchell Hooks, depicts a tense, claustrophobic confrontation. A massive spider looms in the foreground, its thick, obsidian limbs partially obscuring the left side of the frame. Its sharp-tipped legs extend toward the center, creating a sense of imminent danger. To the right, a man in a crisp white long-sleeved shirt and textured brown trousers stands precariously atop an open matchbook. He brandishes a long, thin, needle, gripping it tightly while gazing at the creature with a fearful expression.

The title, "The Shrinking Man," is prominently displayed in large, bold, bright yellow sans-serif lettering, spanning vertically from the top middle toward the bottom left. In the top right, text reads, "The most powerful tale of horror you will ever read—" above "by RICHARD MATHESON, master of the art." The top left features a metallic gold circular emblem with a blue ribbon inscribed "GOLD MEDAL GIANT," while the top right shows the price "35c" in small white font.

The background is a moody gradient of deep teal and pitch black, suggesting a shadowed indoor setting. Dramatic, directional lighting casts high-contrast shadows, highlighting the man’s white shirt and the matchbook. The palette is dominated by dark greens, blacks, and earthy browns, contrasted by the luminous yellow title and stark white elements.

A man sits atop a black horse, looking down toward a woman lying on the ground. The horse is positioned in the center of the frame, angled toward the left, with its front legs raised in a rearing motion. The man wears a dark, charcoal-colored tunic with heavy folds, dark trousers, and a wide-brimmed black hat adorned with a single bright red feather. He holds the leather reins in one hand and a long, thin, silver-colored sword in the other, with the blade pointing slightly downward. The woman lies horizontally in the foreground, her head resting on the dark earth. She has long, wavy blonde hair that spreads across the ground, and she wears a light pink, sleeveless garment with thin spaghetti straps. Her eyes are open and directed upward toward the man. The background consists of dense, dark green and deep brown foliage, representing thick trees and tangled bushes, situated behind the horse and the man. The ground where the woman lies is composed of dark, moist-looking earth and small patches of bright green moss and grass. The color palette is dominated by the solid black of the horse, the dark, shadowed tones of the man's clothing, the pale, luminous pink of the woman's dress, and the various muted greens and earthy browns of the wooded setting.

                    Nikolai Sokolov:

Simultaneously adored and reviled, Nikolai is a complicated individual who is utterly committed to his adopted family in the military. And yet, he cannot avoid bouts of insubordination and impulsive behaviour.

But the outwardly confidant persona hides an inner turmoil. Nikolai always means well, but his impulsive behaviour tends to work against him.

Nikolai has, at rest, a rather serious face that transforms when the more exuberant parts of his personality engages. When he is at his most charismatic, as he is here, he has the expression of someone with a mischievous and deliberately provocative nature.

He is likeably attractive, if not traditionally handsome, but there is also a hint of insecurity in his eyes.

His short brown hair is fairly typical for a pilot, and his pose is reminiscent of cheeky protest, a pose that asks 'what did I do'?

He wears the Human Democratic Republic uniform, a green tunic with white trim, fastened to the left hand side of the body.

The book cover for Octavia E. Butler’s "Blood Child and other stories," featuring artwork by John Jude Palencar, presents a minimalist, high-contrast, and abstract composition. At the top, the title "BLOOD CHILD" is prominently displayed in large, stark white, sans-serif, all-caps lettering. Thick, mustard-yellow vertical bars descend from the upper edge, creating a rhythmic, striped effect that interrupts the typography. Directly beneath, the phrase "and other stories" is rendered in a smaller, black, lowercase, sans-serif font, centered within a clean, white horizontal band.

The background is structured into heavy color blocks. The upper section behind the title is deep, matte black. To the right, a vertical block of vibrant orange-red provides sharp contrast, featuring dark, blurry, finger-like shapes extending downward. The lower half, below the white band, consists of a vast, light gray area with a heavy, tactile texture. Centered here is a bright, glowing, white, oval-shaped light source emitting a soft, diffused halo.

At the bottom, the author's name, "octavia e. butler," is printed in a black, lowercase, sans-serif font. The very bottom edge features a single line of small, yellow, all-caps text: "AUTHOR OF PARABLE OF THE SOWER." The aesthetic is stark and modern, utilizing a limited palette of black, white, mustard yellow, orange-red, and light gray, all unified by a grainy, film-like texture.

SEMIOSIS by Sue Burke. Cover art by Nigel Cattlin.

The cover features a large, bioluminescent, tentacle-like organic structure that dominates the composition. Curving from the top right toward the center-left, it spirals into a tight coil at the bottom left. The structure is a deep, saturated reddish-orange, textured with dense, fine, hair-like filaments. These microscopic cilia are tipped with brilliant, glowing white and pale yellow light, creating a shimmering effect along the curve. The appendage displays segmented, ringed patterns illuminated from within by a warm, pulsating orange glow, suggesting a biological internal light source.

The background is a vast, abyssal, star-filled expanse resembling deep space or a dense field of microscopic organisms. This void consists of countless tiny, sharp white and pale cream-colored dots scattered irregularly against profound blackness.

In the upper right, the text "SENTIENCE TAKES MANY FORMS" is written in a clean, white, sans-serif font across two lines. The title "SEMIOSIS" is prominently displayed in a large, bold, white, sans-serif typeface across the lower third of the frame. Directly below it, the author's name, "SUE BURKE," appears in a slightly smaller, similarly styled white font. At the very bottom, a centered white blurb reads: '"A fascinating world." —The Verge'.

Two humanoid creatures with grey skin and dense patches of brown fur covering their lower bodies, legs, and limbs hold a human woman aloft. The figure on the left possesses an open mouth and reaches toward the woman's waist with a clawed hand while looking toward the right, while the figure on the right carries the woman across its wide hip, looking toward the left with a similar gaze. Her arms are raised upward and outward in a wide arc, and her head is tilted back with her eyes wide. A thin, white, jagged line, resembling a crack or a bolt of energy, extends from her raised hand toward the upper right corner. White, leaf-like shapes with pointed edges are scattered throughout the scene. The background contains small, faint white flecks resembling distant stars or dust within a dark blue void. The central figures are enclosed within a thick red frame. The musculature of the creatures is visible through their skin, particularly on their arms and shoulders, where the texture is smooth compared to the coarse hair on their thighs and calves. The entire central illustration is composed of sharp lines and high-contrast shading between the dark blue void and the brightly lit skin of the figures.

It's the story of an old woman struggling to fit in because her village has a very tight sense of community, yet she likes to be alone, so she takes on a leadership role so as not to appear anti-social. But, a coloniser invades, and she has to coordinate their defence, yet they have no army, no weapons. How will they survive?

In the foreground, a woman stands facing left with her arms raised toward her head, her slender fingers reaching toward a golden, circular headpiece that rests upon her brow. She wears a sleeveless, light green gown made of a smooth fabric that features subtle folds and shadows defining the curves of her torso, paired with a structured red bodice that features a dark, heart-shaped ornament at the center of the chest and intricate gold-colored trim tracing the neckline and edges. Her dark hair is pulled back tightly, revealing a necklace of large, dark, spherical beads that hang against her neck. Behind her, a large, semi-transparent figure of a man with long, flowing dark hair and a pale, featureless face looms, his large hands raised near his temples in a posture that mirrors the woman's gesture. This figure appears as a greyish-white, ethereal silhouette, with limbs that are slightly blurred against a dark, shadowed background. To the right, a textured, reddish-brown surface or wall is visible, showing irregular vertical patterns and cracks. Scattered within the dark background are small, indistinct white flecks and faint, light-colored shapes that resemble distant sparks or particles. The golden elements of the headpiece catch a faint, singular light source, creating bright yellow highlights against the deeper ochre tones of the metal.

The illustration depicts a dark, silhouetted statue of a winged figure sitting atop a large, rectangular stone pedestal. The figure has human-like proportions, with large wings extending from its back and a head with features that appear partially obscured by shadow. The figure holds a long, thin object, similar to a staff or scepter, in its right hand, which is raised upward. The pedestal is dark brown or black. In the background, there are light-colored, jagged mountain peaks or rock formations under a pale yellow and light blue sky. On the right side of the image, dark green and brown foliage from trees or large plants frames the scene. Small, dark shapes that resemble birds are positioned near the top of the pedestal and in the sky. The color palette consists of dark blues, blacks, and browns for the foreground elements, contrasted against the pale yellow, white, and light blue of the distant mountains and sky. The woman has long dark hair and is wearing a light-colored, sleeveless garment that is tan or peach in color with a green fabric draped around her lower half. She faces the man. On the right, a man with white hair and a white beard is visible from the chest up, looking through a window frame. He wears a dark purple or dark blue shirt. His right hand is near the bottom of the window frame, holding a small knife with a metallic blade. Behind the man in the window is a dark background. In the foreground, below the window, is a brown wooden chair that is overturned or broken, with pieces of wood and a dark circular object visible. The window frame is dark brown, and a green curtain hangs to the left of the man in the window. The background through the window shows light-colored, indistinct shapes. The color palette consists of red, blue, tan, green, brown, and white.
