It was a great day today to be a frog. It was hot and sunny here in SE Massachusetts and my solitary frog was enjoying the shallow end of my backyard pond waiting for a juicy fly to go by. Patience is key here. 😃 🐸

Photo of side view of large green frog (bullfrog). It is sitting in very shallow water with most of its body out of the water. The water has gentle ripples in it from a small waterfall (not shown). Reflection of the frog’s body are seen in the water.

🌿 What is a Food Forest, and Why Does It Matter?

A food forest is a garden designed to mimic the way a natural forest grows—but instead of only wild plants, it's filled with edible and useful species. Trees, shrubs, herbs, vines, groundcovers, and root crops all grow together in layers, creating a thriving ecosystem where each plant supports the others.

The result is a resilient landscape that produces fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts, and other valuable crops while improving soil health, conserving water, increasing biodiversity, and requiring fewer external inputs over time.

At Green Youth Movement, this is the vision we are working towards.

Once we have secured the full funding needed to acquire our land, we aim to establish a food forest that will serve as both a productive demonstration site and a learning hub. This will enable us to increase food production, diversify our harvests, and train many more young people, farmers, and community members in regenerative agriculture and sustainable food systems.

A food forest is more than a place to grow food—it's an investment in healthier communities, restored ecosystems, climate resilience, and a more sustainable future.

🌱 By supporting our vision, you're not just helping us plant trees—you are helping us cultivate knowledge, restore the land, and empower the next generation to grow food in harmony with nature.

Together, we can grow a greener, more food-secure future.

No birds to be seen on our walk this evening. Like us, they are probably suffering with this hot, dry weather. Still, there is a hint of possible rain here next week - fingers crossed for that.
At least a deer was kind to us 🙂

A Roe doe standing at the edge of the woods, looking back over her shoulder at us, assessing our threat level. She stayed until we got quite close, then ambled onto the path out of the woods.

lily pads from a canoe on a bright sunny day

Small Oval lily pads shot from almost directly above. They are crammed together tightly causing the edges of many the pads to pucker up relative to the center. The natural waxiness reflects the strong sunlight. The pucker creates interesting oval patterns. Several of the pads are dying or diseased creating red and yellow. Most have been chewed on by insects.

At the end of the day, there’s a deep satisfaction in riding a lonely trail through the Norwegian wild, the kind that settles perfectly as you reach the bivouac in the Scandinavian woods. The tent becomes your home, and for a moment you belong to that place.

A narrow trail winds through a dense forest of tall, straight trees. Soft golden light filters through the trunks at the end of the day, illuminating the lush green ground cover and creating a peaceful, secluded atmosphere.

A Highlands Cascade” — A small creek tumbes down a hillside, Isle of Skye.

I live in s place (San Francisco Bay Area of California) that isn’t exactly a desert, but it also is not particularly wet. Virtually all of our rainfall comes during a mostly-winter rainy season that lasts just a few months, and the rest of the years is generally dry. In fact, by this time of the year many of our hills and valleys have dried to a “California golden”color. So Scotland was quite a contrast for us! It rained at least a little on virtually every day we were there, and water — in rivers, streams, lochs, and the ocean — is everywhere…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/07/31/a-

The descent down the mountain in last week's hike began with this picturesque trail down a ridge overlooking a valley (left pic). I could see for miles, viewing distant mountain ranges, making for a very pleasurable hike. A 3D rendering of the entire hike is shown on the right where the top of the ravine (1) and this descending trail (2) are indicated.

Photo of trail that follows a ridge down into the valley. This section of trail is above the tree line allowing for unobstructed panoramic views of the valley and distant mountain ranges. The trail is lined with rocks and cuts through a grassy meadow. Blue sky overhead with some clouds.

This is Boott Spur Trail shortly after I left the summit of Boott Spur Mountain. I am overlooking Pinkham Notch, with Wildcat Mountain on the far side of the notch. This trail is in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, NH.

The solid red line is the path I recorded on my Gaia hiking app. This is a "lollypop loop" where the beginning and ending are the same section of trail in the lower part of image. The road and parking lot where my car was parked are seen in white at the bottom. The loop section begins at the top of the "stick" of the lollypop and goes in a counterclockwise direction as I first hiked to the top of the ravine (the "1" at the top) and then descended along the secondary ridge on the left side (the "2" on the left).

This image was rendered using Maps3D.io, US NAIP. Dimensions are 6.3km X 3.5km.

So, it was hot and sunny the other day near Lake Superior. I got fascinated by the shadow-shapes in pools of water in the billion year old lava flows.

Abstract photo showing the corner of large cube of rock, the edge of which descends vertically in the frame into a pool of water. The surface of the water is light blue, reflecting the sky. Near the rock cube are two generally rectangular blocks of shadow on the water's surface. They almost connect to the large rock cube, but are separated by a thin line of blue due to the meniscus of the water. Underwater to the lower right of the frame is a block of rock that appears faded due to the way the light moves through the water.

Abstract photo of a pool of water with several layers of shadow. The water pool is formed by a rectangularly eroded section of base rock. Against the base rock is a white line that follows the base rock outline. This white line is caused by the way the water's meniscus reflects the sky, while the block of dark water next to it, being flatter, is shadow.

It’s amazing how fast we went from rainy to brown with smoke in the air. It doesn’t take long, though the gulches remain green.

Two cascading waterfalls tumble down a wide, moss-covered rock face in a lush Pacific Northwest forest, their silky white water spreading and merging across multiple tiers of dark green and grey boulders before pooling in a striking turquoise-green basin at the base of the frame. Dense ferns and bright green moss coat every surface of the surrounding rock walls, while the cool, diffused forest light gives the entire scene a rich, deeply saturated colour. Dense ferns and bright green moss coat every surface of the surrounding rock walls, while the cool, diffused forest light gives the entire scene a rich, deeply saturated colour. Good day!

It’s amazing what a big difference a small change can make.

Our nights have cooled down to normal levels, which is making it more difficult to wake up in the morning.

Yes, I guess I just complained about sleeping well. 🤣

                                              Be everwell.

Upon arriving at the top of the headwall of the ravine in last week’s hike, I hiked along the ridge of the mountain range. This is a long, expansive ridge— 10+ miles (20km) long and very wide and rounded where I was. I hiked a relatively short distance to the next peak after which I began my descent. This section of ridge was mostly boulders marked by cairns. An easy section although very windy.

Photo of pile of rocks (cairn) overlooking the ravine that I had just hiked up. The ravine is immediately behind the cairn. The surrounding walls of the ravine are seen on each side of cairn. Other mountains seen off in the distance. Dark clouds overhead.

This is a cairn at the top of Tuckerman Ravine on Lawn Cutoff Trail near the intersection with Tuckerman Ravine Trail. Presidential Range, White Mountains, NH.

A long series of cairns marking the trail is seen beyond the closest cairn. The cairns extend all the way to the next peak as indicated by the red arrow.

                                                  Good day!

I wish I could take credit for this (besides taking the picture), but it was a huge coincidence.

To see why, zoom in slightly left of center.

I raised the camera, and at the instant I was depressing the shutter, there was a commotion in the brush ahead.

                                                  Be everwell.

On the surface, this is a picture of a trail passing through pine forest as the path curls to the left. The grass is green, the undergrowth minimal. There are mountains in the background beneath a hazy sky. What’s unusual is the doe running through the forest at the point where the trail disappears from view. She’s moving fast enough that she’s slightly blurred.
