                      I’ve been hiding in the house the last few days because it’s hot and the lovebugs are swarming. If I get on my lawn mower, they follow me around like I’m the grand marshal of a very stupid parade. They’re attracted to the exhaust, of course.

                      Researchers in Florida actually studied the little buggers and found that exhaust fumes exposed to sunlight chemically resemble the smell of decaying vegetation — the same stuff they use as breeding grounds. That’s why, during peak season, anyone driving on the highway ends up with the front of their car absolutely plastered with the little B*****ds.

                      To make matters worse, once they splatter on hot paint, their bodies start breaking down fast. That rapid decomposition creates organic acids, which can damage the finish if you don’t clean them off in a timely manner. I did read somewhere that the enamel on newer vehicles is more resistant, but I’m not eager to test that theory.

                      If I’m going to do anything outside for the next few weeks, it’ll have to be in the morning before they start swarming. They love heat and humidity, and once the day gets going there are always several perched on the back storm door like they’re waiting for instructions.

                      Other than being a nuisance by getting in and on everything, they’re harmless. But still, I can’t help getting that feeling of a wildlife swarming attack like in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. I don’t quite run through the yard with my arms over my head, but it sure feels like I want to. Sure, lovebugs serve a purpose by helping break down decomposing vegetation — but honestly, is it really worth it?

                                                                                This semi-cleared location is a local orchid 'hot-spot' (at least for Corunna!) with beard orchids (Calochilus) also found here in spring. However it is also on privately-owned land which has changed hands since last season and might be more developed this year.                                                                                           I’m just absolutely stunned by the rural Idaho sky. It sits at 2 or 3 on the Bortle scale for measuring dark skies, a vast difference from Brooklyn’s light-polluted Bortle 9. You leave the house lights and walk out, before moonrise, right into a sea of stars, the Milky Way overhead.

                                                                                          And oh, the moon. In a city you forget how brightly Luna can shine. Here, looking out on a field brilliant with moonlight and crisp shadows, you know exactly who owns the night.
