      Quarry Oasis

      From the outflow of a now abandoned quarry mine, you can still see the remnants of rust staining caused by the structures that used to exist at this outflow decades ago while the mine was active. Small circles can be seen stained into the granite rock side . Now, a beautiful blue river instead.

      Vivid glacial turquoise water tumbles over a series of low, rust-stained rock ledges in this wide panoramic river landscape photograph, the long exposure softening the multiple cascades into smooth ribbons of white that flow into a brilliantly coloured pool of blue-green glacial water below.         A Great Spangled Fritillary.

        I have a long history of trying to take a butterfly’s picture at the moment it takes off.

        This one did the same.

        What was different was that it kept landing just ahead. So, I chased it down the trail.

        Be everwell.

                Getting excited about hiking up this mountain again later this week. Been waiting for a good weather window. Here is a view from my hike in May after a long scramble up a steep slab of rock in a ravine. The weather is predicted to clear later this week, allowing me to go up the other side of the ridge. Same mountain, different ravine, new fun. Can't wait!

                    July 20, 1983, 43 years ago today: The remainder of the trail over Peters Mountain was much like the last few miles of hiking yesterday. The rocks continued to be tolerable. There were but a few exceptionally bad stretches. Thus far, only about twenty-five percent of the trail since the Cumberland Valley has been particularly rocky.

                    We are looking out from atop a mountain over the treetops on the mountainside towards the valley hundreds of feet below. The valley is rather flat farm country, with several small villages visible. The rest is farm fields with a few patches of forest. Several long, low, flat-topped ridges rise along the far horizon. Glimpses of a major river winding down through those hills. It is a whitish summertime sky, mostly clear with a few small clouds. Distant views are hazy.

                      Yesterday's evening walk... It's been a great week for cloud spotting, but with dozens of storm cells & hail moving through the area all week...

                      (Also thinking about the connotation to wildfires raging in Canada... 😢)

                                    Everyone on the West coast is familiar with Alders - they're the first trees that sprout new life when a forest is cleared or burned away. But what most haven't seen is an Alder grove.

                                    The trees pictured here are not the usual thin stick like tree's you're used too, but nearly meter diameter trees standing in a unique wetland area that's prevented the usual Large Leaf Maple and Cedar to move in over the decades.

                                    A dense stand of moss-encrusted alder trunks recedes into misty forest light, every surface blanketed in thick green growth in this moody Pacific Northwest old-growth scene.

                                      Fairy Falls 2020

                                      This is one of the first images I was proud of and still enjoy from my first years of shooting . I've returned here many times to take various different compositions over the years, but this first one still makes me happy.

                                      The bright haze as light breaches the canopy above, the slight lens flare and the lens water spec I left in the frame. And of course the water tendrils of the waterfall.

                                      A silky multi-tiered waterfall cascades down a mossy, rocky cliff face into a calm, dark pool below, captured with a long exposure that gives the water a smooth, ethereal quality. The falls are framed by a lush Pacific Northwest forest of towering conifers and moss-covered rocks, with soft diffused light filtering through the canopy above.

                                        It is , so here is a . I know, I know. I upload seascapes on most days anyway. But today at least it is legit.
                                        For this one, I went to explore an unknown beach. The beauty of it was that it required a 45 min hike before the sunrise in the total darkness through the forest. Which meant no people around. Also, I saw deer footprints but no deer.

                                          I assume it is an ancient petrified lava flow. Maybe partially lava flow, partially normal rocks, which were in the way. Maybe something totally different. But it does look like stone flowing down.

                                                It's lets celebrate today!

                                                On this multi-day backpacking trip we had maybe 6hrs of sunlight over a full week as the late summer storms hit us every day. This was one of the fleeting moments of brilliant light that pierced through the rain clouds. An absolutely breathtaking moment.

                                                A dense foreground of low tundra shrubs in yellow and green autumn colour sweeps toward a dramatic wall of dark, jagged peaks under a turbulent storm sky, with shafts of light breaking through the cloud cover and illuminating sections of the rock faces and the valley between the summits. A massive sheer cliff face dominates the left side of the frame, while rain or mist visibly falls through the gap between the peaks in the middle distance.

                                                  It’s summer. The heat continues. Not much else to say about the weather this time of the year.

                                                  At least it’s tolerable. The days climb to +/- 90F (32.2C). In other words, hot, but the nights cool considerably. Even shade makes it comfortable.

                                                            Purple? I’m a fan, which is a good thing this year because fleabane seems unusually abundant.

                                                            And then there was the oversized plant that was oval instead of round. It was impossible to miss, but difficult to photograph owing to the breeze.

                                                              Basalt columns always add a sprinkle of magic to photos. Combined with the moody sunrise, this felt like a scene from a fantasy book to me.

Dark, wet basalt columns frame a narrow inlet, while the sea has been smoothed into mist by a long exposure. Heavy storm clouds dominate the sky, with a faint warm glow near the horizon where the light breaks through.

                                                                      As The Fires Settled (2022)

                                                                      During wildfire season in 2022 in was partially burnt and ravaged. Shortly after the fires reduced again I was able to drive through the park and take some photographs of the changed landscape - it was heartbreaking. Of course, worse years were coming the following summers... This image is one of the hillsides, partially burnt away with the dead remnants a deep brown red.

                                                                      A jagged, snow-dusted rocky mountain peak towers above a deep valley in Jasper National Park, Alberta, its sheer grey cliff faces catching soft directional light against a partly cloudy sky. The surrounding slopes tell a sobering story of wildfire recovery, with dark, fire-scarred hillsides in the foreground giving way to patches of surviving evergreen forest in the valley below, where a misty river winds through the shadows.                                                                         Good day!

                                                                        I think this is the day.

                                                                        I’ve longed toyed with the idea of leaving home on foot, hiking the paved trail to Mount Sentinel, and climbing it.

                                                                        It’s a small peak, the hike to it long, but flat. The endeavor as a whole, though, is ambitious. 🤔

                                                                          July 5, 1983, 43 years ago today: Late in the day, the AT began to skirt a huge complex called Big Meadows which sprawled across acres of ridge crest. A short climb on a side trail brought me to the summit of Black Rock (not to be confused with Blackrock, a peak I traversed further south in Shenandoah).

                                                                          Standing on a rocky ledge looking through an opening in the trees on an otherwise wooded mountainside. Several branches of a nearby pine tree frame the top and right side of our view. A couple hundred feet down the slope, a short stretch of the two-lane park road Skyline Drive is visible winding around the mountain we are on. Far below the road, the mountainside ends in a narrow valley. Beyond that valley are rugged, wooded mountains. One of them has a number of open grassy stretches on the side facing us, possibly ski runs.
