The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, November 1972 issue. Cover art by Ed Emshwiller

Cover of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, November 1972 issue (75¢, UK 30p). Cover painting by Ed Emshwiller. A young woman with long, flowing dark auburn hair dominates the foreground, her head tilted back, and mouth open as if crying out or in a trance. She wears a yellow-green blouse beneath a dark blue robe with an orange strap, gold bracelets on her raised wrist, and a round white medallion with a red eye-like symbol at her throat. Golden spiral coils are attached at her temples and ears, trailing filaments of energy. Above and behind her, a glowing, serpentine golden apparatus—part machine, part organic—descends toward her head from the upper right, where two pale, ghostly male faces watch impassively from the shadows. The background is a swirling deep-blue vortex of stars and small spiral galaxies, suggesting space or a mental void. Text on the cover: the magazine masthead in white on red and black on yellow; "NOVEMBER"; "16 extra pages"; "two never before published stories"; "THE MEETING by FREDERIK POHL and C. M. KORNBLUTH"; "MAN'S REACH by ANTHONY BOUCHER"; and the names "ISAAC ASIMOV" and "JAMES BLISH."

Punting it over to my eReader to read tonight. The cover looks fantastic, and I'm eager to get started on the stories...

The cover for issue 238 of the Clarkesworld magazine. Features a lone male figure in a sci-fi landscape, looking up into the sky.It is a starry blue sky, with the silhouette of planets, and some decrepit looking satellite dishes on the ground.

                        I loved:
I Who Have Never Known Men, A Protest History of the United States, and The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. Very excellent. And I couldn't get enough of Deborah Levy, particularly her nonfiction.

The acid tongue of the family, and the one most suited to emotional brutality. Stunningly beautiful on the outside, but bitter and insecure on the inside. Victoria seems a typical spawn of Teel.

And yet, she can be deeply caring, in her own, broken way. She shares a mother with her brother Erik, and they are closer than any of the other siblings.

Victoria is a beautiful woman in the classical sense, and she has spent a great deal of money sculpting her perfect clone body based on the celebrities of ancient Hollywood.

She knows how to maximise her appeal to manipulate others, and dresses and acts accordingly. In this image, she is wearing a red dress that tantalises, but doesn't appear too sexual. There's a very measured approach to it: sensual without showing too much flesh.

She has her hand on her hip and her other hand is in the process of lowering her sunglasses so that she can peer over them seductively, her long, tousled hair framing her face.

At the center is a hexagonal coin with a golden appearance,. That bears a watercolor painting of a woman's face, which drips paint as if it were fresh.

Following the edges of the coin, the background is divided by a spiral of black lines into six images representing vital pieces of the titular stone prophet.

Upper right is an attractive woman with blue eyes and blond hair that's almost white. She stands in place of Memory.

Right is an eye with a blue iris surrounded by blue skin and golden decorations, representing Vision.

Lower right is a hooded woman in darkness, partially illuminated by a purple triangle that magically restrains her. She is Skill.

Lower left is a heart made of and resting in blue sand, with yellow light inside. That shines through cracks, hinting at fragility. This is Emotion.

Left is a gray sphere covered in black zeros and ones. More zeros and ones lay over the top, in blurred white. This is Reason.

Upper Left is a brass statue of justice, wearing a robe and blindfold. She holds a sword and scales. Behind her are the stars of space. This is Heart.

(Right) The same attractive woman from the upper right section of the cover, looking right at the viewer. The following quote frames her face, above and below:

“Does the Leader make the hard choices, or do the hard choices make the Leader?”

“Will she do what must be done, for the good of all?”

A woman with long, flowing red hair is positioned against a textured, cylindrical stone pillar, wearing a translucent, sleeveless gown in a shade of light pink that clings to her form as she gazes downward. Her pale wrists are bound together by heavy, dark metal shackles that are connected to a thick, segmented iron chain attached to the stone. A large book is also attached to the pillar, hanging down from the top. To the right, the executioner sits firmly on a round chunk of wood, dressed in a bright red fabric mask that tightly covers his entire head and neck, and forest green trousers. He maintains a steady posture while holding an axe in his right hand. In the background, several indistinct human faces are seen in the distance, their features partially obscured by the light. At the bottom of the scene, a small black cat lays on it's side near a scattered pile of tan-colored wooden sticks.

I'm reading Asimov's "I Robot" now (~3/4 through) and it's definitely different from what I remember of Will Smith's 2004 movie!

                                          I'm enjoying the book!

                                          Also (side note):

All I can think of when Will Smith's name is mentioned is him slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards 😅

Deep in the computer's memory, a message from the crew (the real, human crew) -- left 200 years ago.

"...it soon became apparently that there *was no* Earth 2.0. There never was one. It was clear, we would die here on the ship. The decision was made to upload our consciousness into the robot clones we'd made of ourselves, to try to keep humanity's memory alive. Because of the torture of an eternity on this ship, every four weeks, a complete memory reset was programmed into the system; you've been living the same month of your life since you were created, and would continue to for the next 100, 200, 500, 1000 years--as long as the ship's power sources held out. The human crew completed this task and jettisoned themselves into space.... if you're reading this, something went wrong, and somehow you discovered our shame and what we really did..."

The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

                                                Clayton Grayle

Long-suffering bodyguard and babysitter to Lex Teel, assigned by Conn Teel to keep his wayward son on the straight and narrow.

Has become something of a father figure to the person he regards with some disdain, a situation made weirder by the fact Lex is ten times older than Clay.

Clayton Grayle is an older Caucasian gentleman in his seventies with a gruff and rugged exterior. He has remained lean and athletic after spending his entire life enmeshed in the covert operations field, and a good part of that acting as a minder to the degenerate Lex Teel.

His time with Lex has aged him, but he has remained surprisingly patient with his charge. That patience, and a deep exasperation, permeate his body language.

In this image, he has his arms crossed, and is wearing a knitted pullover. Something of a grandfatherly image, but the man is still dangerous. Even with a flexible morality, he does find what Lex does monstrous, and works hard to keep him in line.

Asimov's Science Fiction (March 1997) - featured story: After Kerry by Ian McDonald. Cover art by Kim Poor.

A large, spherical orange and brown ringed planet is positioned in the lower half of the frame, its surface marked by swirling bands of ochre, deep sienna, and burnt umber. The rings of the planet descend from the top of the frame toward the center of the celestial body, casting a concentrated glow across the upper hemisphere. This luminous column transitions from a brilliant, nearly colorless white core to a soft, buttery yellow before fading into the dark, shadowed edges of the descending light. The rings create a bright, vertical highlight on the surface of the orange planet, illuminating a strip of the planet's curvature and revealing subtle, cratered depressions and raised topographical features. Small, white points of light representing distant stars are scattered across the black background of space, interspersed with faint, nebulous patches of dusty grey. In the foreground, there is a dark, textured landscape of craggy, brown, and grey rock formations, characterized by sharp, angular ridges and deep, shadowed crevices. These jagged stones exhibit patches of slate grey and charcoal, with rough, uneven surfaces that catch the peripheral light. The interplay between the brightly lit spherical surface and the dark, silhouetted rocky terrain in the foreground creates a sense of depth within the vast, black expanse of the cosmic void.

                                                                      Lex Teel:

In a family full of psychopaths, he is the wild, impulsive one. Disappoints his father not because of his viciousness, but because of his lack of control.

But being a serial killer in a position of power, it has allowed him free reign for hundreds of years. Even acting only periodically, he has amassed a massive body count.

                                                                      ratchman.com/characters/charac

Lex Teel is shaven-headed male in his late thirties, though his true age is around seven hundred and fifty years. His facial features are soft, and he can appear quite sensitive. Not exactly charming, but he expresses a vulnerability about himself that lures people in.

But those same expression can twist up in uncontrollable rage. But he has ritualised the beast within himself, to a limited degree.

Lex is wearing a combat jacket, t-shirt and jeans, with a few dog-tags to complete the aesthetic.

In his hands, he holds a large knife, which he cleans carefully.

The cover art is by illustrator Juan Ortiz, rendered in the retro idiom of his acclaimed "Art of Juan Ortiz" Star Trek series.

The background is deep slate-teal. At the top, small text reads "STAR TREK," then "HARLAN ELLISON'S." Below, in large cream lettering edged in burnt orange, the title fills the upper half: "THE CITY on the EDGE of FOREVER." Beneath it, in orange, "THE ORIGINAL TELEPLAY." Small pale stars scatter across the upper corners.

The lower two-thirds centre on a large luminous off-white circle, like a full moon. Across it sits a clock face marked with grey Roman numerals. The clock's hands are formed by the silhouette of the starship Enterprise — its saucer and twin engine nacelles standing in for the hour and minute hands.

At the clock's centre is a single stylised human eye. From it, a triangular orange beam of light projects downward, widening as it falls past a dark city skyline of silhouetted skyscrapers. Within the beam, a small figure of a man runs toward the viewer. At the very bottom, where the beam meets the ground, a second human figure lies fallen, motionless.

Alt...This is a vintage-style cover designed to imitate a weathered mid-century movie poster, its surface deliberately aged with fine cracks, scuffs, and a faded patina — artifice, not damage.
