            Little Painted Desert near Winslow, Arizona. April 1984. A colorful labyrinth of eroded rock formations and box canyons.

              Pilot Mountain - The Failed 2nd Coming

              One of my first ever big expeditions with a Camera was, against all good reason, was to climb the 3-4 miles to the top of Pilot Mountain - after working 10 hours that day.

              Thursday, I had it in mind to come back to the mountain with fresh eyes and some experience.

              Well... ehhh, I also didn't plan the timing of the day very well, as, as you can see, I don't have an actual photo of the mountain.

              "Firekeeper, why do you not have pretty picture of Mountain?"

              BECAUSE THE SUN WAS BEHIND IT!

              Ughh, Charlie Brown. Well, I suppose my next visit to this splendiferous Mountain will be had at 7:00pm rather than 7:00am next round, but nonetheless, I did walk the top and grab shots as I went, and made the most of the morning mist down below, or as much as I could of it.

              I took WAY more photos than I thought I did Thursday so these first four will be the first of eight to twelve from that trip. Right now, 8 seems more definite, so here's the first 4 that I've edited thus far.

                    It’s currently 42F (5.5C). I have warm loungewear on, my windows open, yet it’s comfortable inside. The expected high is 68F (20C).

                    Those open windows allow me to hear the AC go on and off in the living room of the apartment upstairs. Interesting.

                      Not all trails are made just of dirt and rock. Some also involve crossing streams. This is one of our stream crossings from the trip earlier this week. Relatively easy, just took a little thought before taking the stretched-out step over the water between the two boulders-- main concern was that the launch/land points on the two boulders were wet slippery moss on sloping rock surfaces.

                                      Had a great day hiking to waterfalls yesterday in the White Mountains, NH. Six beautiful waterfalls involving three trailheads and four trails. More pics (and a video) to come, but will be hitting the trails again shortly.

                                                        Had a great day of hiking in the White Mountains, NH yesterday. Hiked up a trail that had lots of beautiful waterfalls, summited one of the peaks, traversed along a contour, then looped back down a different trail. Perfect weather and great scenery made for a perfect day. More pics to come!

                                                            The hike last Friday had a long stretch of fun scrambling up steep rock slabs. It was accented by beautiful waterfalls that I climbed along. The upper right pic shows the base of one of the climbs and the lower right pic is a view looking down near the top of another climb. The section was 4,600 ft (1,400m) long with a vertical gain of 1,500 ft (450m) and an average grade of 33%. Fun!!

                                                              Can you see the trail here? After climbing up steep slabs of rock during the ascent on last week’s hike in the White Mountains, NH, I was greeted with an expansive field of boulders through which I traversed —- over two miles (3+ km) of boulders like this. Made for slow going. This mountain (Mt Washington) is nicknamed “the rock pile” for good reason!

                                                                  First view! When hiking up a mountainside with the goal of reaching a summit, it is always exciting when first seeing a view of the destination, even while still far away. Here was my first view of the ridge I was hiking to in my recent hike in the White Mountains, NH. I stopped and enjoyed the moment before I continued up the incline.

                                                                    Check out the roots! The trail that I hiked on in my recent adventure in the White Mountains, NH varied dramatically as I hiked from the trailhead up to the ridge. While much of the trail consisted of either steep rock slabs or a boulder field up high, it looked much more like a trail down low such as in this pic with roots, small rocks, and dirt.

                                                                      The scene was taken while exploring a riverside park full of these ancient cottonwoods in the during a particularly smoky summer. The light cast on the scene had this dirty red colouring... I've corrected it largely.

The gnarled, leaning trunks twist organically beneath a thick canopy of vibrant green summer foliage, creating a layered and atmospheric woodland scene.

                                                                          There’s going to be sunshine this morning. I hardly recognize it, but at least I know it’s real.

                                                                            For : Indianhead Mountain (aka Chief Rain in the Face) with a rainbow, seen from the alluvial flat at the mouth of Hellhole Canyon in Anza Borrego Desert State Park, California.

                                                                            This isn't the best angle to photograph the mountain to really see the "Indianhead" but who could resist the combination with a rainbow?! :)
