Marge Piercy's Woman on the Edge of Time (1976) lies between psychological exploration of an oppressed woman's mental health & a sci-fi novel of time travel; we're never sure whether the protagonist is actually able to visit a possible future, or merely hallucinating due to the drugs & treatment she receives in a mental health facility. Its an oddly inconclusive read but has moments of insight into the human condition.

Strout's characters are interesting, along with their secrets, deceptions and indeed the things never said. The high school history teacher loved by all, is a wonderful main character for his compassion and humanity but also his understanding of what Trump's return to office means for the US and the world. An engaging read!

I'm reading *What We Can Know: A Novel* by Ian McEwan, which is set 100 years in the future. The protagonist is a university professor whose specialty is the period 1990-2030.

This passage in which he's talking about this period from the perspective of himself, his colleagues, and his students resonates with me because I've been having somewhat similar thoughts this week (though emphasizing "they were idiots") in the wake of the glacier collapse. Of course, McEwan's thoughts are much more expansive and lyrically put than mine. :)
