"It has been a sight to see how every one of the president’s policy initiatives has sabotaged some core constituency or other. From farmers and rural Americans to manufacturing workers and every American struggling to make ends meet, Trump has torched pretty much his entire political base. For all his efforts to rig the midterm elections in his favor, it’s as if he is daring the Maga faithful to drop him.

"And now, according to the most recent survey by Harris for the Guardian, even voters who identify as foot soldiers of the president’s political army are becoming impatient with the state of affairs, increasingly willing to blame the government for their economic troubles.

"About 56% of respondents who identified as members of the Maga coalition said they were either having trouble meeting their debt payments or worried they would be struggling soon. The same share admitted similar troubles meeting housing payments. 57% said the same about affording healthcare costs. 58% claimed the same about their utility bills, 61% about affording groceries, 63% about paying for gas.

"Many of these stressors stem from Trump’s policy preferences. Trump’s decision to end government subsidies is largely at fault for the rising cost of #HealthInsurance. The rise in energy costs and rebound of inflation since March are direct consequences of #Iran’s throttling of the #StraitOfHormuz. Resurgent #inflation interrupted the Federal Reserve’s campaign to ease monetary policy and interrupted the gradual decline in mortgage rates.

"Manufacturers have culled nearly 100,000 jobs since Trump took office, in part due to Trump’s tariffs. Farmers have been whacked by higher costs of energy, fertilizer and machinery.

"Rural Americans voted for Trump by a margin of 40 percentage points in November of 2024. According to the Harris poll for the Guardian, 49% of them now say their personal financial security is getting worse. That is even more than the 42% of Americans in #rural areas who claimed their personal finances were deteriorating in the Harris poll taken in April last year, a few weeks after '#LiberationDay', when Trump imposed tariffs on everybody and sent financial markets around the world into a tailspin.
Similarly, in the latest poll, 45% of Americans with less than a four-year college degree reported a worsening financial situation, up from 42% in April of 2025.

"These constituencies are at the core of the Maga movement. And they are losing patience with the justifications for Trump’s destructive policies: 54% of Maga faithful think the government is the most responsible for the rising prices of goods and services. Contrary to the repeated claims from the White House, 41% of them believe economists’ observation that American consumers bear most of the costs of Trump’s tariffs."

" 'These countries are under enormous pressure to buy from the sons of the president so he will do what they want,' said Richard Painter, a former chief White House ethics lawyer under President George W. Smaller populations often mean smaller tax bases and fewer government officials, leaving rural communities with fewer resources to negotiate deals with developers or weather the tax revenue fallout after facility closures.

The Geography of the Data Center Boom

"The following map shows the number of data centers in both metropolitan and non-metropolitan, or rural, counties. As of June 2026, approximately 30 of the 529 data centers currently in operation are located in rural counties, representing about 6% of operating data centers. At the time of this analysis, 16 rural data centers were either recently approved or currently under construction, representing about 12% of all in-progress projects.

"The Daily Yonder uses a county-level definition of rural derived from the Office of Management and Budget (#OMB). All counties outside of a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) are classified as rural for the purposes of this analysis.

Information on the locations of data centers comes from #FracTrackerAlliance, an organization providing the public with interactive tools to understand #oil, #gas, #petrochemical, and data center development across the country.

"While there are many other datasets out there tracking data center development, few of them are publicly accessible, making a complete analysis difficult. We chose #FracTracker because of the organization’s methods for obtaining data and the monthly frequency with which it updates the database. We saw that frequency as a key metric for tracking this fast-evolving issue. FracTracker obtains information from crowd sourcing, media announcements, partner datasets, and public records. While the organization is primarily focused on proposed data centers, it is slowly adding existing data centers to the database.

"That means that the data used in this analysis is preliminary. Because it is a work in progress, FracTracker encourages readers to share new and updated information about data centers in their own communities via a submission form."

"The private prison company #CoreCivic has sold two of the largest immigration detention facilities in California to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in a deal worth $1.5 billion, the company announced Monday.

"CoreCivic said it anticipates that the sale of the #OtayMesa Detention Center in San Diego County and the California City Detention Facility in Kern County will bring the company an estimated net proceeds of approximately $1.1 billion.
The sale closed on July 2, according to a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, with the federal government paying $739.2 million for the 1,994-bed Otay Mesa facility and $732.6 million for the newly-opened 2,560-bed California City facility.

"CoreCivic said in a news release that it expects to continue running the day-to-day operations of both facilities under existing management contracts with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The company acknowledged in its filing that the terms of those contracts could be renegotiated now that the federal government owns both properties outright.

"They also might not be renewed. CoreCivic’s contract in California City contract runs through August 2027, and its Otay Mesa contract is in effect through December 2029, with an option to extend for five more years.

"The Department of Homeland Security’s purchasing program surprised local officials in at least five states, who only learned of the purchases and their purpose after the deals closed.
