Dude. What a .. decade?

Remember when we were so hopeful that the start of this decade - in 2020 - would bring good things? (haha?)

WTH happened?

I think everyone is dazed.. it's like, we keep getting punched.

I'm on the constant lookout for moments of kindness and beauty - and adding my bit.

What are your strategies?

Weather Whiplash Decimates Pennsylvania Fruit Crop

This is one of the challenges plant breeders and farmers face - for temperate tree fruit crops that go dormant for winter and emerge "when the coast is clear", what happens when the coast is not clear in Spring?

It's not unprecedented to have a crop emerge and get devastated by late frosts. What's new is how often it's happening and how dramatically...

In particular, chapter 6, which deals with "experimental communities" and why they fail -- citing , lack of practical knowledge, and how cooperation and were needed for communities to survive. And also how defense (against others, protecting crops, etc.), and leaders who aren't forceful are also necessary.

Ahhhh. And some truly lighter reading. The last printed issue of the Farmer's Almanac (in print since 1818). I will miss their tips and tricks as well as topics like natural pest control, , herbs of the month, how to make , and tips. I noticed they also acknowledged and , and highlighted .

One of Europe’s Hottest Cities Rediscovers an Old Cooling Technique

          By Laura Millan
          August 8, 2023

"The streets of in southern were so hot that July afternoon that it felt almost impossible to walk outdoors. As temperatures approached 42C (108F), people scrambled to find shelter in air-conditioned homes, offices and public buildings. Yet, less than two miles from the city center, a cool breeze blew under a giant white roof.

"The structure is a part of CartujaQanat, an architectural experiment in cooling solutions that doesn’t rely on burning more planet-warming . The site, about the size of two soccer fields, includes two auditoriums, green spaces, a promenade and a shaded area with benches. But its star performer remains hidden — the qanat, a network of underground pipes and tubes inspired by Persian-era canals.

"The grid of can lower surrounding temperatures by as much as 10C using just air, water and power, according to Emasesa, the Seville public water company that helped to build it. The system is modeled on ancient tunnels dug to bring water to agricultural fields that were first documented in what is today . The Persians realized 1,000 years ago that the running water also cooled the air in the canals, so they fashioned vertical shafts to bring that air to the surface.

" 'This is not an air-conditioning system like the one you may have in your home,' says Juan Luis López, the project’s supervisor and an engineer at Emasesa. 'We use natural techniques and materials to reduce temperatures.' "

[Thread] Releases Series of Short Films Produced by

            by Barbara Ayotte
            November 25, 2024

"Honoring Native American Heritage Month, GBH, Vision Maker Media, and NOVA have released a collection of six short documentaries, Legacy of the Land, covering climate change in Native American communities. The first of its kind, the collection includes stories each produced by an Indigenous filmmaker making the series as dynamic and distinct as Native American communities themselves. From Alaska to Arizona, audiences witness the knowledge, tradition, and innovation of people living on the front lines of our changing climate. This series is a companion to NOVA’s film, Sea Change: The Gulf of Maine, which was released in July.

"'This series shines a well-deserved spotlight on Native American climate solutions that are based on Indigenous knowledge and science. The stories provide a rare insight from the perspective of Indigenous filmmakers who have given us privileged access to their communities,' said Laurie Donnelly, GBH Executive Producer."

Experts say the is making Europe’s more frequent and more intense.

                      Published On 24 Jun 202624 Jun 2026

Excerpt: "What is causing the heatwave?

"Meteorologists said the extreme temperatures are driven by a heat dome, a vast area of high pressure that has become parked over Western Europe.

"The phenomenon is being sustained by what is known as an omega block, a weather pattern named for the Greek letter because of the similar shape it creates in the atmosphere.

"Under normal conditions, the jet stream carries weather systems from west to east. During an omega block, however, that flow becomes distorted, trapping a ridge of high pressure between two low-pressure systems.

"The result is that hot, stagnant air remains locked over the same region for days or even weeks. The UK Met Office said Britain currently lies on the boundary between the high-pressure system and cooler air to the northwest, which is creating sharp contrasts between hotter conditions in the south and east and cooler, wetter weather farther north."

A favorite of mine, Windy.com -- which has had significant upgrades!

"In 2021, two new forecast models were integrated - ICON-D2 with local coverage for central and west and ICON Global. Thousands of new air quality stations monitoring primary pollutants worldwide were added from our partners and to fight .

"Several new layers were launched - Tidal currents featuring high-resolution data; the Sea currents dataset was updated; Thermals layer with soaring forecast for glider and paraglider pilots; Drought monitoring layers - Soil moisture, Moisture anomaly, and intensity, monitoring global drought.

"We also expanded into the wear OS category and introduced Windy Apple Watch App. The 3D Globe mode was brought back for most layers (desktop only), including the Hurricane Tracker.

"In 2022, we launched several new features and improved existing ones. In the beginning of the year, we added a new set of stations as a POI overlay and partnered with SaveEcoBot, run by a non-profit organisation SaveDnipro, and obtained a broad spectrum of environmental data sources in and offer them in an easy-to-access way to our users and other affected communities for free.
New local models HRRR for the US and ACCESS model for Australia were added, along with a set of layers wet-bulb temperature, UV Index and Solar power.
With release of iOS16, the Windy.com iOS app got LockScreen widgets, which can be placed on the phones's locked screen. A new significant iOS feature.

"For the , we launched redesigned and upgraded our Hurricane Tracker and added multimodel forecast & LIVE satellite visualization. Users in the US could also appreciate an improved radar resolution and coverage."

The Invisible Effect That Is Most Likely to Kill You

is less dramatic than floods or storms, less inconvenient, and much harder to politicize. It’s also much more deadly.

                                                      Liza Featherstone, August 1, 2025

Excerpt: "In , I’m lucky enough to enjoy better air quality than many other places. We are only the fiftieth most city in the world, way behind , , , , and numerous (enormously populous) cities in . But for a few days early this week, it was hard to breathe and our phones were buzzing with alerts warning that the most vulnerable—the very young and the very old, and those with poor respiratory health—should stay indoors, due to smoke from Canadian wildfires. But the elderly, the asthmatic, and the babies weren’t the only ones feeling it; my son, a college soccer player, got headaches training outside, as did his friends—all fellow rain-or-shine athletes. Yet for the most part, the problem has gone unremarked.

"Compared to a flood, a fire, or a heat wave, a bad isn’t that inconvenient even when it’s happening. You can still go to work and otherwise go about your day. If you own property, it won’t be damaged. And because lacks visuals, it doesn’t lend itself to morbid or panicked media coverage.

"Yet compared to floods, fires, and heat waves, bad air is much more deadly. In fact, the danger is barely even comparable. The World Health Organization estimates that air pollution kills about seven million people every year. The direct death toll from heat waves is under half a million, although that’s getting worse. The number of people who die in floods annually is in the thousands, and the direct death toll from wildfires is much smaller than that, though these threats are also getting worse. "

"Human-caused boosted Iceland and Greenland ’s temperatures by several degrees during a record-setting May , raising concerns about the far-reaching implications melting has for weather around the world, scientists said in an analysis released Wednesday.

"The Greenland ice sheet melted many times faster than normal during the heat wave, according to the analysis by World Weather Attribution, with at least two communities seeing record temperatures for May. Parts of Iceland saw temperatures more than 10°C (18 °F) above average, and the country set a record for its warmest temperature in May when Egilsstadir Airport hit 26.6°C (79.9 F) on May 15.

"The findings come as global leaders put more focus on Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments that he would like to annex the mineral-rich island.

"Burning for electricity and transportation releases pollutants such as carbon dioxide that cause the planet to warm unnaturally fast. The Arctic is one of the fastest-warming places on Earth.

"Even in today’s climate, the occurrence of such a strong heat wave in the region is relatively rare, with a 1% chance of occurring in a year, the analysis said. But without human-caused climate change, such an event would be “basically impossible,” said Friederike Otto, associate professor of climate science at Imperial College London, one of the report’s authors.

"The extreme heat was 40 times more likely compared to the pre-industrial climate.

Global impacts from a melting Arctic

"Otto said this extreme weather event affects the world.

"As the Greenland ice sheet melts, it releases massive amounts of fresh water into the salty oceans. Scientists say this could slow down the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation [], an ocean current that circulates water from the Gulf of Mexico across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe and then the Arctic.

"Such a slowdown could disturb global climate and weather patterns.

“The nature of weather in the Northern Hemisphere is directly tied to what’s happening in the Arctic, because that ice floor basically at the bottom of the atmosphere helps determine the weather patterns that we get,” said Waleed Abdalati, who heads an environmental sciences institute at the University of Colorado Boulder. He was not involved in the WWA analysis.

"The Greenland ice sheet and other ice covering the Arctic can influence where and when wind blows, how much water content the wind has and whether precipitation falls as rain or snow.

"Most of the melting of the Greenland ice sheet happens in June, July and August. The May heat wave means there will be a longer melting season this year.

"Melting ice sheets and glaciers also contribute to that is threatening to flood coastlines globally and inundate low-lying island nations in the Pacific Ocean.

" communities in Greenland are increasingly encountering dangerous travel conditions as sea ice that was once constantly frozen begins to thaw. Access to traditional hunting locations are lost, and sled dogs can no longer travel the same routes. Thawing can destabilize buildings and increases the risk of and caused by landslides."

The alert signals conditions that can pose health risks even to healthy adults, not just the elderly or chronically ill. France's sports minister said too many people were trying to cool off in rivers and canals without necessarily taking the risks into account."
