@gunstick I don't like people who act like big dicks and who do nothing but complain. I thought I was doing people a big favor by promoting efforts that fight . But I guess I'm not pure and holy enough for Saint Gunstick.

    This is good news!

The scientists behind the new independent organization Climate.us are the same experts Trump fired because they were researching and reporting on climate change.

Formerly NOAA’s Climate.gov, they didn’t disappear. They rebuilt.

Now they’re independent and preserving climate data, outside of political interference, with public support and a team of volunteer scientists.

"While the government didn’t hesitate to delete inconvenient climate information, dedicated volunteers outside the government managed to preserve copies of much of the material, which the federal government is prohibited from copyrighting. The volunteers and former climate.gov admins got together and launched climate.us. On Tuesday, the team announced that it had completed the project to restore everything lost when climate.gov shut down.

The website features Climate.gov’s 15-year collection of climate news and stories, expert blogs, visual status reports on key climate indicators, maps and data pathways, climate literacy resources, classroom materials, and restored access to the Fifth National Climate Assessment.

The team behind it, which includes several key people who built climate.gov, says it’s not satisfied with simply restoring what was lost. Having established a nonprofit to maintain the new website, the organization will shift its focus to what it calls “long-term public service.” It plans to establish new resources and develop additional materials to help explain the changing climate to the public."

UK June heat record pushed further to 37.1C

And the UK record for the hottest June day ever has now been broken again,
with 37.1C provisionally recorded in Cavendish, Suffolk this afternoon, the
Met Office said.

This surpasses the high of 36.7C recorded in Merryfield, Somerset, on
Thursday - with both figures being over 1 degree Celsius higher than the
longstanding June record set in 1971.

Met Office climate spokesperson Grahame Madge said: “Before this week,
the 1976 UK June temperature record had stood for 50 years, but -
provisionally - it has been exceeded on three consecutive days this week.
“And importantly those new records have come from a broad swathe of
southern England, from Somerset to Suffolk: this shows what a widespread

Land temperatures in Europe, as measured by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite on Wednesday, 23 June.

Note that ground temperatures are considerably higher than air temperatures.

The current European heatwave is caused by an atmospheric pattern of persistent high pressure – a ‘heat dome’ – trapped between low pressure systems.

On 23 June, France recorded its hottest June day ever.

Secretly Participated in Network Donor Events

by Joshua Kaplan, Justin Elliott and Alex Mierjeski
                                    Sept. 22, 2023, 5 a.m. EDT

Excerpt: "Thomas has attended at least two Koch donor summits, putting him in the extraordinary position of having helped a political network that has brought multiple cases before the Supreme Court.

" 'In the 15 years since, the Koch network has left a deep imprint on American society. Its advocacy is credited with helping stamp out Republican Party support for combating , once an issue that drew bipartisan concern. The “full weight of the network” was thrown behind passing the 2017 , securing a windfall for the Kochs and their donors. And the upcoming Supreme Court term could bring the network a victory it has pursued for years: overturning a major legal precedent known as .

"While most Americans aren’t familiar with the 1984 case Chevron v. , it’s one of the Supreme Court’s most-cited decisions. Legal scholars sometimes mention it in the same breath as Brown v. Board of Education and Roe v. Wade. In essence, Chevron is about government agencies’ ability to issue regulations. After a law is enacted, it’s generally up to agencies across the government to make detailed rules putting it into effect. The Chevron decision said courts should be hesitant to second-guess the agencies’ determinations. In the years that followed, judges cited Chevron in upholding rules that protect endangered species, speed up the approval process for new cellphone towers and grant benefits to coal miners suffering from black lung.

"The Koch network has challenged Chevron in the courts and its lobbyists have pushed Congress to pass a law nullifying the decision. It has also provided millions of dollars in grants to law professors making the case to overturn it.

"The network’s position has become increasingly popular in recent years. Once broadly supported by academics and judges on the right, Chevron is now anathema to many in the conservative legal movement. And there’s no more prominent convert than Thomas.

"In 2005, Thomas wrote the majority opinion in a case that expanded Chevron’s protections for government agencies. Ten years later, he was openly questioning the doctrine. Then in 2020, Thomas renounced his own earlier decision, writing that he’d determined the doctrine is unconstitutional after all — a rare reversal for a justice with a reputation for being unmovable in his views.

"By last year, Koch network strategists sensed that victory could be at hand. During an internal briefing for network staff, Jorge Lima, a senior vice president at Americans for Prosperity, said the Supreme Court seemed primed to radically change its approach to the issue. The network was trying to find cases that could bring about major changes in the law, according to a video of the meeting obtained by the watchdog group Documented. “We’re doubling down on this strategy,” Lima told the crowd.

"Several months later, the Supreme Court announced it would take up a case, Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, in which Koch network staff attorneys represent the plaintiffs. If Thomas and his colleagues side with them this coming term, Chevron will be overturned once and for all."

"A deadly and record-breaking that’s spreading eastward across Europe has revived interest in a hypothetical temperature forecast for August 2050 in France.

"The forecast was recorded in 2014 as part of a campaign coordinated by the World Meteorological Organization () that invited about 60 presenters worldwide to imagine a weather report from the year 2050. In one clip, Évelyne Dhéliat from French television network TF1 presented a hypothetical scenario of high temperatures 36 years into the future — during a heat wave in a warmer climate in 2050."

Make summer heat a little more bearable with a do-it-yourself evaporative cooler.

"Swamp coolers will not provide relief in areas with high humidity, since they add humidity to the room."

"A swamp cooler, also known as an evaporative cooler, pulls air into a container and over water or ice, causing an energy exchange in which the heat in the air is absorbed by the surface of the ice or water, cooling the surrounding air. This process is known as 'evaporative cooling,' and works a lot like sweating does on your body. You can purchase a swamp cooler, or make one yourself relatively inexpensively. The DIY set-up uses a cheap commercial fan to pull air across ice or water to accomplish the evaporative cooling result."

If it’s warmer outside than inside, opening windows will let that warmth into your home. Open them when outdoor temperatures drop to allow cooler air to flow in. [And create a cross air flow, if possible -- one fan bringing in cooler air, with another fan blowing hot hotter air.]
