A beautiful encounter last week while tracking a cougar. The deer was nervous. A cougar was spotted there two days prior to my first visit. It is only a matter of time before I see and photograph one. There has been a lot of sightings in different areas in my region recently.

Large tall trees and bushes creating a green tunnel around a narrow path in the middle of which a black-tailed deer buck stands, its back turned to the photographer.

For the first time in three decades, a puffin chick has been recorded at the last puffin colony on mainland England’s southern coast, at Dancing Ledge in Dorset.

The colony has dwindled to just three breeding pairs, down from more than 40 in the 1950s, prompting the National Trust to install monitoring cameras this spring after 15 weeks of watching the cliffs.

Volunteers tracked fish deliveries to the nest from May 31 to July 5, putting the chick’s age at 38-40 days.

The puffling is expected to head out to sea soon and, if it survives, could return to breed at around four years old.

Researchers hope reviewing the camera footage will help them pin down what’s been preventing chicks from surviving in recent years, possibly predators like rats

                    Good morning. ☕☕☕

                    24 July 2026

Do you remember a time when you didn’t know how to write? I do. It’s a vague, hazy memory of trying to imitate my parents by scribbling squiggly lines across a chalkboard. That’s something that supposedly happened seventy years ago. Or is it?

Is it an actual memory — or just a memory of a memory? Do I only remember it because I’ve remembered it before?
Whoosh. I just blew my own mind. 🤯

A memory of a memory of a memory is a strange concept. It’s like that old game where you line up ten people and whisper a sentence into the first person’s ear. Each person passes it along, and by the time it reaches the tenth person, the message has transformed into something completely different. If memories work the same way, how accurate can they really be? Memory is a tricky thing.

My wife and I often experience the same events together, yet years later we sometimes recall them differently. Sometimes the difference is so stark that one of us remembers something clearly while the other insists it never happened at all. Was the memory lost by one of us — or created by the other?

So how can a false memory begin?
A false memory starts when your brain fills in missing details, blends experiences, or absorbs suggestions — and then treats that new construction as if it were an actual event. It usually doesn’t happen overnight. Imagine your mother telling you a story over and over about something that happened when you were young. Eventually, you might fill in the blanks and believe you remembered it all along.

Nevertheless, the chalkboard event really happened.

“Memory is the diary we all carry about with us.” — Oscar Wilde

“What we remember is not what happened.” — Julian Barnes

“Every act of memory is an act of imagination.” — Oliver Sacks

                    Pink Stripes in Bloom

"A cluster of lilies fills the frame like a small explosion of color and delicate structure. Each bloom stretches outward on long, slender petals that curve gently at the tips, giving the flowers a graceful, ribbon-like appearance. The petals are pale pink at their edges, deepening into richer pink tones toward the center, where a bold, darker stripe runs the full length of each petal like a painted brushstroke.

The flowers gather tightly at the top of a smooth green stalk, forming a starburst of soft color against a blurred background of deep green foliage. The petals look almost weightless — thin, silky, and slightly translucent — catching the light in a way that makes them appear luminous.

The overall impression is one of elegance and quiet drama: a bouquet of long, narrow petals radiating outward, each marked with a vivid stripe that draws the eye inward. The flowers feel both delicate and confident, standing tall and open, as if reaching toward the viewer. The image is signed “© Swede’s Photographs,” adding a personal touch to the composition." - Microsoft Copilot

In the centre of the image is the head of our adult Raccoon (Procyon Lotor) with the rest of the body extending over to the right. The animal is viewed obliquely with it facing to the left with the head and left side in view and it occupying half the width of the photo. The fur is a of silver and black colour giving it an overall medium to dark grey appearance. From the black nose moving backwards: the snout to the forehead is white with a distinctive black band stretching across the face and over the eyes, giving the Raccoon a masked appearance. At the base of the medium length legs, the fur thins revealing five long digits or fingers with short claws at the ends. The bushy tail is hidden behind the end of the bench's back rest. To the left of the wood bench is a wooden floor below, with the worn planks stretching from the base to the top of the photo.

I like this overexposed image because its artsy, nearly monochrome look gives it a rustic sense of another era. It shows a great blue heron standing on one leg atop a weathered timber pile rising out of the ocean off Gulfport, Mississippi.

"A tall, weather‑worn timber pile rises straight up from an unseen ocean below, its surface pale and rough from years of salt and sun. At the very top stands a solitary great blue heron, balanced in that unmistakable one‑legged pose. One long leg is tucked up tightly beneath its body, hidden in its feathers, while the other leg — thin, straight, and impossibly delicate — supports the entire bird with effortless grace.

The heron’s body is elongated and elegant, its soft gray and blue plumage washed into pale tones by the overexposed light. The brightness erases fine details, leaving the bird outlined in gentle whites and muted grays, almost like a watercolor fading at the edges. Its long neck curves in a relaxed S‑shape, and its sharp bill points outward, giving the impression of quiet vigilance.

Because the image is overexposed, the background dissolves into a glowing haze. There is no visible horizon, no ocean surface, no sky — just a bright emptiness that makes the heron and its lonely perch feel suspended in space. The timber pile becomes the only anchor in a world of white, and the heron appears calm, patient, and perfectly balanced on its single visible leg.

The whole scene feels serene and slightly surreal — a lone bird standing on one leg above a hidden sea, captured in a moment where light softens everything except its silhouette and stillness." - Microsoft Copilot with edits by the photographer

PSA: Wood boxes with slits that are marketed as "butterfly houses" are purely decorative. Multiple studies have confirmed that butterflies never use them. But paper wasps (Polistes) do, which is not great for butterfly populations because these wasps hunt caterpillars. Plus they sting, so not great for humans walking by.

The butterfly has landed to refuel and been drinking for 10 minutes now. I‘m going to spend the rest of today reading about butterfly anatomy and finding out where all this water goes…as soon as the butterfly is loaded up and on it‘s way again, because right now I have to stand guard between the insect and a sleeping cat.
