New Evidence Reveals Industry Sponsored in 1954

Documents shed light on the earliest-known instance of climate science funded by the fossil fuel industry, adding to growing understanding of ’s knowledge of

By Rebecca John
on Jan 30, 2024 @ 09:00 PST

"In 1955 in the wilds of Big Sur, a young Caltech researcher named Charles David Keeling gathered carbon dioxide samples among Northern California’s towering redwoods. Crawling out of his sleeping bag several times a night on research trips conducted over the course of 18 months, from January 1955 to June 1956, Keeling measured background levels of carbon dioxide across the western United States — at Big Sur, but also at desert and high mountain stations, in forests and grassland, above the city of Los Angeles, and over the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

"Keeling’s findings would lead him to conduct a separate series of experiments from the top of the Hawaiian volcano Mauna Loa resulting in the famous Keeling Curve — a visual depiction of rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) caused by the burning of fossil fuels. His work underpins our understanding of manmade climate change."

Sues Major Over ‘Ongoing Deception’ About

The lawsuit follows similar suits by eight other states and the District of Columbia against major oil companies, all alleging complicity in climate change. Those states are New Jersey, California, Delaware, Minnesota, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island

    Story by Nina Golgowski
    November 27, 2024

"The state of Maine has filed a lawsuit against five major oil companies and their top lobbying group, accusing them of carrying out a decades-long disinformation campaign about climate change and their contribution to it in order to maximize profits.

"Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey, in his lawsuit filed Tuesday in state court, accuses Exxon Mobil, Shell, Chevron, BP, Sunoco and the American Petroleum Institute of withholding internal knowledge about fossil fuels’ catastrophic effects all while spinning public doubt.

"'For over half a century, these companies chose to fuel profits instead of following their science to prevent what are now likely irreversible, catastrophic climate effects,' said Frey in a statement. 'In so doing, they burdened the State and our citizens with the consequences of their greed and deception.'"

Climate Refugees: The Human Face of

      By Marco Kopinke, M.Sc.
      February 20, 2025

"In recent years, the world has witnessed a dramatic surge in the number of people due to climate-related . In 2022 alone, approximately 36.2 million individuals were forced to leave their homes as a direct result of challenges linked to . This marked a significant increase compared to previous years, highlighting an alarming trend that is reshaping lives and communities across the globe. The stark reality is that these numbers are not just statistics; they represent families torn apart, livelihoods disrupted, and futures uncertain. As we continue to see the effects of climate change intensify, the number of is expected to rise, creating a challenge that requires immediate attention and action.

"Looking ahead, the projections paint an even grimmer picture. By the year 2050, it is estimated that up to 1.2 billion people could be displaced worldwide due to the impacts of climate change and natural disasters. This staggering figure underscores the urgency of addressing the root causes of climate-induced displacement. It is crucial to understand that these projections are not mere forecasts but a call to action for governments, organizations, and individuals to mitigate the factors contributing to such mass displacement. The potential scale of this crisis demands a coordinated global response to ensure that those affected are provided with the necessary support and resources to rebuild their lives."

The is changing so fast that we haven’t seen how bad extreme weather could get

Decades-old statistics no longer represent what is possible in the present day.

Simon Lee, Hayley Fowler, and Paul Davies, The Conversation - 7/31/2024

" is, by definition, rare on our planet. Ferocious , searing , and biting illustrate what the climate is capable of at its worst. However, since Earth’s climate is rapidly warming, predominantly due to burning, the range of possible weather conditions, including extremes, is changing.

"Scientists define 'climate' as the distribution of possible weather events observed over a length of time, such as the range of temperatures, rainfall totals, or hours of sunshine. From this, they construct statistical measures, such as the average (or normal) temperature. Weather varies on several timescales—from seconds to decades—so the longer the period over which the climate is analyzed, the more accurately these analyses capture the infinite range of possible configurations of the atmosphere."

to broil ahead of North American

A new heat dome is building in the United States this week. This time it will focus on the West first, then shift toward the Midwest. Storms associated with the will follow the heat in the West.

By Alex Sosnowski, Jul 7, 2026

Excerpt: "As the heat wave crests over the interior West, an annual phenomenon will take place. Moisture will begin to trickle in from Mexico at first, then pick up more steam later this week to next week. A surge in humidity levels, along with a flip of the breeze from the west to the south, is known as the North American monsoon.

" 'There should be a slow propagation of thunderstorm activity from south to north over the interior West that should start with spotty activity at first then become somewhat more widespread by next week,' Pastelok said.

" 'Helping that activity will be an eastward shift of the high-pressure heat dome,' AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said. 'The circulation around the high will help to pump moisture in more freely over much of the West beginning this weekend and more so next week.'

"Many of the early storms over the Southwest may bring little or no rain but gusty and strikes. The gusty winds can kick up considerable amounts of , creating large or . Lightning strikes with no rain can set off scores of new , while gusty winds around the storms can fan the new fires and existing large blazes.

"The nature of the heat dome will trap smoke in the region, which can reduce the visibility, create a hazy or milky-looking sky and create dangers for some individuals. "

Research shows their health is a direct result of .

"As the impacts of continue to escalate, a growing number of climate scientists and policymakers cite Indigenous lands as a model for their rich and effective carbon storage. But that recognition has not always translated into space for Indigenous leaders in climate negotiations, access to funding, or enforcement of standards.

"That has been the case for decades. But the problems do not stop there. New research shows that approach overlooks the key role that Indigenous knowledge and culture can play in mitigating climate change. It also reveals a dangerous misconception that has taken hold in global climate discussions: the idea that Indigenous lands are so rich because they are remote or sparsely populated.

"Nothing could be further from the truth. The health of Indigenous lands and their ability to store vast quantities of carbon stem from the stewardship of the people who inhabit them.

"That’s the finding of research from Conservation International, which shows that traditional knowledge, community protocol, and Indigenous culture play a direct role in protecting forests, wildlife, and the environment. Sushma Shrestha, who is from and the study’s lead author, said the research comes at a critical time.

" 'All of humanity relies on everything that have to contribute and offer in terms of their lands, in terms of carbon storage, in terms of biodiversity conservation,' she said.

"The study, released as a narrative report and a peer-reviewed study, explores how and practices benefit the planet. It also found that all 43 of the surveyed communities are experiencing drought, extreme weather, and other adverse impacts from climate change. More than half are affected by like and .

"Researchers interviewed 49 Indigenous leaders from six continents about how they steward their land, which ranged from the Amazon rainforest to East African savannas and Pacific Islands. They found that traditional management practices like avoiding , maintaining sacred spaces, watching for fires and other threats, and direct resistance against extraction contribute to the remarkable health of Indigenous territory. Ninety-six percent of respondents said they had land set aside for special uses, like spiritual practices, that also benefit the environment by protecting those spaces and ecosystems. Shrestha stressed that although each Indigenous community is distinct, there are shared lessons the entire world can learn from.

" 'It’s a time where all hands need to be on deck,' Shrestha said. 'And collectively, actions need to be taken, and indigenous peoples have been doing this on their own for a very long time.'

"The study builds on years of research that shows, among other things, that the world’s healthiest forests are on Indigenous lands and conservation efforts are more effective when they incorporate Indigenous autonomy and decision-making at every step."

                                                      Hi, family

Once again, we are reaching out with hope.

Today, we are launching a new fundraiser for the next important step: digging a permanent water well on our farm. We have tried several ways to secure water, but they haven't been reliable.

A well will provide a sustainable water source, helping us grow food, care for our projects, and empower more young people in our community.

We kindly ask our supporters, friends, and well-wishers to stand with us once again.

Every donation, no matter the amount, brings us closer to making this dream a reality. Please boost or share our fundraiser it makes a huge difference.

Together, we can keep this sustainable project growing. Thank you for your and continued support.gofundme.com/f/water-well-at-e

Secondly, for a size/scale reference: On the rightmost glacier (Diem-Ferner), the elevation difference between the top edge of the side moraine and the glacier creek is now >100 meters (more than a 30 storey building)...

Back home after the shoot: Testing different candidate images for best match/alignment potential, tweaking and fine tuning their perspectives, video editing...

iven the time it takes the environment to respond to human activity (and changes in that activity), I think we can say this is the likely story for years (or decades) to come.

Clearly, we need to develop a built environment better able to deal with temperature spikes & personal habits that keep us safe(r)... but will we?
