Shades of orange and green sunset, Scoville Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. June 9, 2021, 8:11 PM.

Beneath a pale blue gray sky with a few long, hazy clouds we are standing on the shore of a lake covered with hundreds of green lily pads. The far shore is densely wooded, as are a small island in the middle of the lake and the tip of a peninsula not far off our shore. A small thicket of water grasses and leafy aquatic plants is just offshore at our feet. The recently set sun is painting the sky near and along the horizon vivid orange and casting a bright golden sunlight off the bottoms of many of the clouds.

                          Falls of Eva

                          This is easily one of the most incredible I have access to. A short 9km distance from a parking lot is this gorgeous place that provides endless exploration. Falls of Eva is the best and my most favourite image I have taken here. It reminds me of peace, of releasing fear, and breathing in the spark and excitement of life. The energy is contagious here.

                          Two cascading waterfalls tumble down a wide, moss-covered rock face in a lush Pacific Northwest forest, their silky white water spreading and merging across multiple tiers of dark green and grey boulders before pooling in a striking turquoise-green basin at the base of the frame. Dense ferns and bright green moss coat every surface of the surrounding rock walls, while the cool, diffused forest light gives the entire scene a rich, deeply saturated colour. This lush waterfall nature photograph captures the layered, multi-tiered beauty of a Pacific Northwest cascade in full flow.

                                This is what rice ears look like a couple of weeks after first appearing.

                                        A colourful collection of four butterflies, seen during my walk last Sunday along an old lane :-)

                                        The Brimstone vaguely resembles the leaf it sits on. I saw it land, then lost sight of it for a while. The others were more conspicuous.

                                        A female Brimstone butterfly, seen sideways on, sitting on leaves that it resembles. The leaf colour is a much darker green than the lime green of the butterfly, but the brown spots and edges of both are similar in patterning. The wings are a pale, lime green, with a prominent 'mould' patch - a white spot, surrounded by a thin black line and a large brown area. There are more small brown marks on the wing, a larger one at the leading edge of the fore-wing, and a pink-brown border. The veins are paler than the wings. The antennae are pink, with brown club ends and a pale tip. The top of the body is pale pink, the underside of the body and eye are yellow, the jointed legs are pink.

                                                  Upon arriving at the top of the headwall of the ravine in last week’s hike, I hiked along the ridge of the mountain range. This is a long, expansive ridge— 10+ miles (20km) long and very wide and rounded where I was. I hiked a relatively short distance to the next peak after which I began my descent. This section of ridge was mostly boulders marked by cairns. An easy section although very windy.

                                                    Turns out, kudzu makes even tastier kale chips than kale does! It shows up in our woods every now and then, "planted" by the birds, and I pull it up and cook it. Did you know that the whole plant is edible? The young leaves can be cooked like spinach, but I was searching for a use for the older, tougher leaves. Using my standard kale chips recipe, they turn out tender, crispy, and delicate. Be sure to avoid gathering food plants from locations near heavy traffic and industry - but otherwise, have fun kudzu hunting!
