When I first started uploading manuscripts for #SelfPublishing I used to get quite stressed about spelling mistakes.
Now ... I don't care so much, especially when I see spelling mistakes in literally every printed novel I read.
And when it's an older novel, that surprises me. Sure, they only created digital manuscripts for them in more recent times, but still, they've had a few decades to get it right!
idk I suppose they don't have teams of people working in publishing. Probably it's just one person having to type up and spellcheck it all themselves.

Article mentions the local dynamic of two corrupt political parties that basically take turns governing the island. Not unlike the two U.S. political parties (gee, wonder where the colonials learned it from).
Anyhow, reminded of book I read on the topic:

In the Mouth of the Room #2

What does a room hold?
And what does it refuse?
What does it swallow and amplify?
And if the room speaks back, do we answer?
In The Mouth of the Room is a 70-minute performance program where poetry, music, and movement unfold as a continuous act of listening. Across four artists, the stage becomes a living space, one that breathes and responds, and all who enter it become part of it.
Each artist contributes to a shared composition where nothing fully begins or ends, but instead circulates. A voice lingers. A sound stretches. A body interrupts or absorbs. Works bleed into one another, forming a single evolving landscape for the evening.
The “mouth” is both metaphor and mechanism: a site of speech, but also of consumption and transformation. The room listens as much as it speaks. Together with the audience, the artists shape what can be said and shared, and what remains unsaid and unshared.
This is an invitation to experience performance as something shared and unstable, where boundaries between disciplines dissolve, and where the audience is not outside the work, but within it.

Here we are at the start of yet another summer break. And, again, here we are at trying to find books for my son. I feel like the past few years have been a battle in trying to find something he’s even remotely interested in reading.
Over the years, I’ve posted about this. Some really lovely bloggers and readers have stepped in with some fantastic suggestions. I’ve appreciated all of them. Some, he’s expressed an interest in. Most, he’s, unfortunately, said a quick “no” to without bothering to learn more about it. I guess the title has to be really catchy to him?
My son is now between 6th and 7th grade, and I’m not even going to try to figure out how that even happened. He just finished his first year in a gifted program and is excited to walk an accelerated math path where he’ll be doing 7th and 8th grade math next year. He also finished English and History Honors with respectable grades, and his teacher was quite pleased with his work.
This summer I gave him a few choices of what he can do. He picked reading for an hour a day. Of course, I’m mandating that they have to be new-to-him books that are around his reading level, which is a little higher than his grade level, so something at his grade level or higher, preferably. And of course that means now we need to find books. Why do I keep doing this to myself?
My son can read. He’s always been at least a little advanced. Once upon a time he actually enjoyed reading, because the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books were new to him and he was at just the right age. He even enjoyed the Lemoncello books and Timmy Failure. But now I get the sense he’s outgrowing them. Still, there’s a theme there. He loves male characters around his age dealing with regular kid things with no real romance on the horizon. That’s exactly what those books delivered.
I’m not a MG or YA reader. Other than what other book bloggers post about the books in these categories, I have no idea what’s out there. We’ve browsed the library and bookstore so I’m at least a tiny bit familiar with older titles. And yet he can’t find anything that really piques his interest. I’ve noticed that a lot of MG and YA books coming out these days tend to be romance heavy or message heavy, and definitely female lead character leaning. And fantasy. A lot of fantasy. Pre-teen and teen me would have been in heaven. Where were those books when I was growing up?!
But it makes me wonder if readers like my son are being forgotten. Or maybe it’ll just be harder to come across the types of books he likes and we have to work harder. Which doesn’t quite seem fair, because I can see readers like him just giving up because playing phone games and watching YouTube is so much easier.
Here he is, almost 12, thoroughly uninterested in romance. He’s a kid who just wants to laugh and have fun, because 6th grade was a tough year and he’s tired. He doesn’t need messages. He’s not interested in historical fiction. He doesn’t even want action and adventure. He definitely does not want to read about girls doing things. For one, he can’t identify with them, and, two, they’re girls.
I asked him once what kind of story he wanted to read. He wants boys his age doing regular boy things, getting into regular boy trouble. He doesn’t want romance. He doesn’t want history. He doesn’t want science fiction and fantasy. He can take or leave mystery. He doesn’t want villains and heroes. He just wants normal kids doing normal things. He wants to see boys doing exactly what he’s doing: playing games, doing stupid things, and hanging out with friends. It sounds boring, and that’s probably why the books he craves so badly are impossible to find. But it’s what he wants. That’s why he’s so stuck on Greg Heffley and Timmy Failure. They’re just weird boys doing weird things living a normal life with crazy families (I won’t say our family isn’t crazy…).
Where are books like these? Please, someone, help me find them for him.
It’s so hard to even find books with a boy protagonist these days. Certainly, there are a lot of older titles, and it has been wonderful to see girls taking their rightful place alongside them. My daughter is going to have so many choices. But the older titles are too dated for my son. All those girls of today doing all these cool things? Yeah, he wants to see boys doing them, too. Sometimes, it makes me feel like publishers are catering to the girls because it seems like boys stop reading at a certain age. Hmm, I wonder why…
I get it. Girls were historically marginalized. It’s difficult to go back to the older titles and find some really great leading girls doing all the things boys were doing. I mean, the Alanna books by Tamora Pierce were kind of groundbreaking back then. Of course all these girls grew up wanting to write the books they didn’t have growing up.
But, please, don’t forget the boys. Plenty of men read, but my son’s not quite ready for the adult books I see them reading. And, with how popular SFF is these days, I’m certain he’s not going to be reaching for them anyways. I’m sure there are plenty of boys who like reading, but I’m not quite sure they have the same reading tastes as my son.
I just need a spark, something to get him to want to pick up a next book and a next one and a next one after that. I hoped it would be the Diary of a Wimpy Kid. But he hit a wall, and now we don’t know what the next step is, where he’s moving into lower YA, but doesn’t want the romance, the girls, and the fantasy.
Needless to say, I could use some help.

I really enjoyed The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. It was fun to take notes on all the clues in the characters to figure out the mystery. (confession: I take notes on characters and clues in almost all the books I read.)
"She said that she wrote for the child in herself, but for once I think she was wrong. I think she wrote for the adult in children. She never disrespected them or "wrote down", because she didn't know how." from the introduction by the author's friend and editor.
"... the book didn't lie about bigger things either: that parents were flawed, that adults were hiding secrets, that the world worked in ways that were both unclear and unfair. It was clear eyed in the many ways that people fail themselves and each other, and it offered no straightforward solutions to any of it." from @dansinker and his recent blogpost on the book.

I am not buying their suggestion people will start picking up theory books. The horror trend I definitely see happening. Remaining 3 seem kind of meh to be honest. YMMV.
