After a month of above average temperatures with only 8ml of rain in total, everything here is dry. While watering flowers is usually considered a vanity, I have become increasingly concerned about the lack of moisture affecting the bees. Two nights ago I watered just the honeysuckle. Last night we saw the hedgehog. It had come out from under the honeysuckle and roses. I had been worrying about the bees needing nectar but obviously our slug eating friend also needs moisture.

It is incredibly dry - and while not horribly hot compared to practically everywhere still regularly above average temperature. No rain to speak of in the forecast either. I realise that we are ‘relatively lucky’ but the moist cool summer weather we used to experience here is a necessary part of our local ecosystem too and losing it hurts the whole planet, not just us.

Her research spotlights underfunding, language erasure from public systems, and exclusion from decision-making during crisis situations. Wilson cites devastating #wildfires and #floods as examples of dangerous communication failures.

"In a report analyzing its response to 2023 wildfires, the government of the #NorthwestTerritories listed numerous concerns about how authorities communicated during the fire with #Indigenous individuals whose first language is not English. Its Official Languages Act recognizes 11 languages, but the government's alerts are issued only in English and French.

"On its website, the government highlights its working relationship with Indigenous governments, organizations, and communities to 'co-develop and establish bilateral emergency and communications protocols, as requested, before the 2026 wildfire season.' An approach to weighting historical emissions by population takes a country’s per-capita emissions in each year and adds them up over time. This gives equal weight to the per-capita emissions of the populations of the past and the present day. The results are shown in the figure, listing the top 10 emitters and five selected others. Notably, the Netherlands is the top emitter on both per-capita metrics. Similarly, the UK, US and Canada all remain in the top five on this second per-capita basis.

One of the most drought-resistant plants I am growing is Anthemis tinctoria. The plants flower for a long time and don`t need any watering at all. They actually do better in dry years and like lots of sunshine and well-drained soil. The plants self-seed easily and are also easy to grow from seed.
