Experimental tests possible medicinal use of birch tar by Neanderthals:
'This supports a coevolutionary relationship between medicinal and technological use and production of birch tar during the Pleistocene. The antibiotic properties documented in this study are consistent with the use of birch tar as a wound dressing and skin ointment in Mi’kmaq communities in Eastern Canada, and the use of birch tar in Saami communities of Lapland'

Today's gorgeous tree, seen in Los Altos, California.

A tree, probably a Jacaranda, with lots of lovely purple flower clusters. The ground under the tree has a lot of petals from blooms that have fallen. The tree is in the front yard of a single-story home.

From heat to , report shows climate change completely reshaping

                By Andrei Ionescu, 6/2/2026

"In the far north, climate change is not some distant warning anymore. It is already reshaping the landscape.

"Across Alaska and Canada, Arctic and boreal regions are warming up to four times faster than the global average.

"That puts a huge amount of pressure on that have long helped slow climate change by pulling carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and storing it in , , and .

                When forests stop helping

"The trouble is, those ecosystems do not always stay helpful under stress.

"As wildfires grow more intense, drought becomes more common, and other disturbances spread, parts of the north may start giving back to the atmosphere instead of locking it away.

"Once that happens, the whole climate system becomes harder to stabilize.

"That is why scientists care so much about , the total amount of living plant material across these landscapes."

A council of crows convened on the tree in the neighbor's yard.
From the remaining branches of a tree, they had a lively discussion
A contractor had pruned many of the majestic branches
and left these branches of the tree in a pile

A crow spoke up, declaring what has happened here was no accident
The other crows continued to echo this call for action
This tree has weathered great storms of our many generations
This tree has protected and provided us with many fruits
The branches removed can never been replaced
