While I wasn't paying attention, my chilli plants are doing odd things! 🌶️

One fruit is green and finger-sized, but all the others are tiny and black. Any idea why they're growing so differently?

I got these seeds in a swap from a friend in Germany. The envelope was labelled “Buschpfeffer”.

hey or or , i could use some help
I recently transplanted my citrus, a calamondin, and it seems to be dying. i had sprayed for scale a short while before transplanting using a mix of neem, alcohol and soap, and it didnt seem to react to that.
the way its dying seems to be from the inside out? the branches are turning brown as fully green and healthy looking leaves are just dropping. no yellowing or curling. i thought at first it was transplant stress but now i'm starting to panic.
wondering if there is some rot, i watered with a cinnamon mix just now, its helped with surface mildew and other fungal problems before, so i figured watering it in might help?
          has anyone seen this before?

I realized I have not posted about my tomatoes this year! Decided to go with plants from the Chicago Tomato Man. He specializes in unique heirloom tomatoes. This year I prepared the soil with compost and worm castings and they are doing fantastic! There is something really magical about growing things yourself. And this year I have a little help in the Garden 🤗

There was one tree on our street. 🌳

The council cut it down. 🪾

All that was left was the stump, which people started to throw their litter in. 🗑

So my daughter and I cleared out the trash 🚯

And then filled it with soil, daffodils, and seeds. 🌼

The daffodils have since died but the seeds have started growing 🌱

It has been a nice little activity for my daughter and I to do. When we leave the house each day, she often wants to see the progress. 👧 🔍

Dad passed away before any of the cuttings propagated had matured enough to bloom. This year, it's blooming a lot. This is one of the roses from that propagation.

So, here are some of the problems people brought to us in the Plant Clinic today: 🧵

1/ Jeff brought in samples from his Gala and Honeycrisp apples. The samples from the gala were completely dead with a burnt look, which is a pretty clear sign of fireblight. He said he had fireblight on the same tree last year, had pruned tit out and sprayed it with copper fungicide, but it had come back.

Fireblight is a big problem here and gala is prone to it, so we told him he should keep at it (pruning the dead parts out) but the tree might need to come out. 😞

2/ The honeycrisp samples just had a few dry leaves and did not look like fireblight to me; more like the tree was just stressed. He had fertilized it earlier in the spring with 13-13-13, and a lot of it, and we raised eyebrows at that but that was probably not the core problem. Could have been frost or drought. No diagnosis. We told him to keep an eye on it.

(The Master Gardeners encourage organic methods but we do not judge if people go conventional.)

3/ Marion brought in a trap with two enormous dead yellowjackets in it. She was surprised how big they were. I had also been trapping huge yellowjackets at home so this was a question I wanted to know the answer to!

We did some research into yellowjacket varieties and these were plain old western yellowjackets. My theory is that these are queens, and it's good to nab the queens early so they don't make nests (and many more ywllowjackets). She hoped that was the case.

The peach leaf photos had raised orange blisters on them, which is a sure sign of peach leaf curl, a fungal disease. If it's just one or two leaves you can just cut them off. The tree will need to be sprayed with a fungicide (sulfur is organic) in the winter and spring but now spraying won't help.

5/ Ellen brought in some samples from a rhododendron that were covered in what looked like black soot. We looked closer and found mealybugs, which secrete a sticky waste called honeydew. Given that rhodies are often grown in shade the black soot is a mold from the honeydew.

Fortunately this is an easy fix, remove the mealybugs and the mold will go away. You can just wash off the mealybugs with water from a hose or use insecticidal soap (organic, safe).

I have two more sessions this summer for my Master Gardener class and I hope they will be equally as interesting.

This is a very manecured place. It's part golf course to keep the Tesla and Corvette drivers busy and off of the highways during the day, but if you walk out far enough, you can still find some rustic rather untouched wilderness, my kinda stuff.

I did end up walking out of the woods and finding Mallard lake right in front of me and beyond it, part of the golf course itself, but it was a pleasant surprise to walk out of the woods after half a mile of walking and "BEHOLD... LAKE".

Oh yeah and happy first post on the new instance. Holla back y'all, my ego needs it.
