My neighbours' honeybees visit our gardens often. Today, I caught them feeding on some of my delphinium flowers 🐝💜

Sure, we have a good, shaded vegetable garden but the desert globemallow shrub makes me smile every day.

It's out in the baking sun and just continues to make flowers.

It is winter hardy in USDA zones 6 to 10 and can survive temps down to -10 F.

Not the flashiest of plants, but a lovely survivor.

I have grown Eryngium bourgatii from seed a few years ago and the plants have now really taken off. They have the most amazing dark blue flowers which really stand out. Pollinators love the flowers, especially butterflies and solitary wasps & bees.

🌿 What is a Food Forest, and Why Does It Matter?

A food forest is a garden designed to mimic the way a natural forest grows—but instead of only wild plants, it's filled with edible and useful species. Trees, shrubs, herbs, vines, groundcovers, and root crops all grow together in layers, creating a thriving ecosystem where each plant supports the others.

The result is a resilient landscape that produces fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts, and other valuable crops while improving soil health, conserving water, increasing biodiversity, and requiring fewer external inputs over time.

At Green Youth Movement, this is the vision we are working towards.

Once we have secured the full funding needed to acquire our land, we aim to establish a food forest that will serve as both a productive demonstration site and a learning hub. This will enable us to increase food production, diversify our harvests, and train many more young people, farmers, and community members in regenerative agriculture and sustainable food systems.

A food forest is more than a place to grow food—it's an investment in healthier communities, restored ecosystems, climate resilience, and a more sustainable future.

🌱 By supporting our vision, you're not just helping us plant trees—you are helping us cultivate knowledge, restore the land, and empower the next generation to grow food in harmony with nature.

Together, we can grow a greener, more food-secure future.

This is the view up the allotment for the end of July. We've dug up some of the '2nd early' potatoes with the rather unwelcome assistance of one of the local badgers. It doesn't actually eat the potatoes; it's just looking for worms but it does cause collateral damage in the process.
It also helped itself to an immature but quite large pumpkin.
The runners and climbing French beans are cropping well.

Those are partly dug 'Wilja' second early potatoes in the foreground. You can see leeks and onions behind them. The tall plants with red flowers are the runner beans.
Top: mature trees and a blue sky. 24th July, 2026.

                                                  Lucky bamboo update

After a couple weeks of settling in, the stalks I didnt cut are starting to thrive. Lotsa nice green growth. The two I had to clip still have dark green bases and some papery growth above the cuts.. still dunno but in general its doin pretty good after 2 rough starts.

Every school should have a greenhouse,
a native plant garden, and fruit trees.
Memorizing dates is cool and all, but
kids should also learn to grow food,
watch pollinators at work, understand
how soil actually works, and grow up
knowing that they can actively help the
environment.

The cat is nearly not to see, because her white fur dissolves almost with the bright sunlight. A shovel sticks in the cement pot on the right. Under the cement pots lay torn cardboard scraps and a little solar charger infront of them. The whole installation stands on a laminated floor. Between the cement pots lay also the round little solar panel and more into the room the coloured led-lights in a row on an electronic cable wire.
