Once again, the Black Swallowtails are eating our garden Fennel.

A vibrant, green Black Swallowtail caterpillar with black stripes and yellow spots is seen resting on a thin green Fennel stem amidst fine green foliage.

    Some of the many stalwart redwood trees at the forest named after them in Warburton.

    This is my second visit to the forest, and it still delivers. It's a lovely tranquil area, with nice ferny-bush surroundings and a river running down the back of the redwood area. There's also plenty of mushrooms poking out of fallen trees and such that will almost certainly appear in some future photos here...

    Warburton, Victoria, Australia

    A photograph of the base of a redwood tree. The tree occupies most of the right hand side of the image, connecting to the ground about 1/3 of the way from the bottom of the photo, and is reddish-brown bark. The ground is covered in brown redwood leaf litter and varies from light to dark, some is saturated and some is pale. In the background is more redwood trees, and the green leaves of those trees can be seen though they are blurry. A little light can be seen from the sky as well. The scene is dimly lit, with sunlight coming from behind filtering through the redwood trees from behind before reaching the scene in front. Much of the scene is in shadow, including the redwood trees in the background.

        LOUIS BASSETT was standing at the back of the theater, talking to the publicity man of The Valley company, Fred Gregory. Bassett was calm and only slightly interested. The spell is broke, the charm is flown!
          Thus is it with Life's fitful fever:
          We madly smile when we should groan;
          Delirium is our best deceiver.
          Each lucid interval of thought
          Recalls the woes of Nature's charter;

                        I first started birding in winter and when this time of year rolled around, I kept thinking that I had discovered new birds That I had never seen before, only to discover they were juveniles. I was reminded of that when spotted this juvenile American Robin last weekend. This is my 3rd summer birding and he still threw me for a minute.

A base and dastard fear is the sole principle of human nature to which the slave-holder appeals. Their slender stems and long, fine awns are crisp and graphic, at times resembling delicate lines in a drawing. Each ear appears at a different height, giving the composition a sense of lightness and natural rhythm. The background is completely out of focus. Instead of recognizable plants, it becomes a soft, organic texture made of bright patches, subtle shades of grey, and darker irregular shadows. Vertical streaks and gentle tonal shifts create the impression that the entire field is moving slightly in the wind. The sharply focused ears remain still points of reference against this soft, almost abstract space.

                                              In the mornings, when I open the back door to let my dog Charlie out, a dozen or more mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) — along with various other birds — scatter from the ground and lift into the trees. They’re always out there ahead of me, quietly foraging until the door swings open and Charlie trots into their world.

                                              This particular dove was poking through the grass near a white stone, pausing just long enough for me to catch the moment.

                                              "A mourning dove stands quietly in the grass, its small body angled toward you as if it has just paused mid‑step. The bird’s plumage is soft and earthy — warm tan along the chest with a faint pinkish glow, shifting to gentle blue‑gray on the wings. Scattered black spots dot those wings like delicate ink marks. Its long, tapered tail rests lightly behind it, giving the dove that unmistakable streamlined shape.

The dove’s dark eyes are round and glossy, full of that calm, watchful stillness these birds always seem to carry. Just in front of it sits a white stone, smooth and pale against the green grass. The contrast makes the dove appear even more delicate, as though it has wandered up to inspect this quiet landmark in its little world.

The background softens into blurred greens, letting the dove stand forward in crisp detail — a small, peaceful moment captured in the middle of an ordinary patch of yard." - Microsoft Copilot

                                                    I went for another hike yesterday on my Colorado adventure. This time I drove the car up to a ridge in the foothills of the mountains, then hiked a loop along the ridge. The trail took me through a mix of forested areas, lookout points to see expansive views of the valley, and meadows. There were many beautiful wildflowers such as this in the meadows.

                                                    Photo closeup of wildflower in meadow. The plant has long green stems with purple flowers on each stem. A bumblebee landed on one of the flowers just as I took the photo! The meadow has dry tan grass. Green evergreen trees on the horizon.

This trail is in Mount Falcon Park out of the West Trailhead. This park is outside Denver, Colorado.

The light reflects off the butterfly's wings highlighting shades of green and small red dots along the edges. It is a red-spotted admiral (Limenitis arthemis). This one landed on the rustic metal arm of a garden bench that sits outside my backdoor.

Its wings, adorned in vibrant blue hues, extend gracefully from its body. Along the edges of these wings, we observe contrasting black markings that emphasize their delicate structure. White spots, meticulously arranged along the wing margins, add an intricate touch to the overall pattern.

Notably, near the tip of each wing, there are two distinct red spots—a striking contrast against the predominantly blue coloration. These crimson accents contribute to the butterfly’s allure.

The wings possess an enchanting quality: iridescence. As light dances upon them, they shimmer and shift in color, creating a mesmerizing effect. Against the subdued tones of the butterfly’s dark body and head, this iridescence stands out even more vividly.

The composition intentionally keeps the background out of focus, directing our gaze solely to the butterfly. In this way, we appreciate the intricate details of this remarkable insect." - Microsoft Copilot with edits by the photographer
