Nine hundred sixty-eight kilometers of road that belongs to everybody.

Six hundred two miles circling an entire island and coming back to a zero-kilometer marker outside Songshan Station in Taipei. Taiwan spent the mid-2000s deciding the coastline belonged to people moving at fifteen miles an hour. Cycling Route No. 1 opened December 30, 2015 — dedicated paths, quiet roads, rest stations every twenty kilometers.

King Liu built the largest bicycle company on earth and didn't ride the loop until he was 73. Fifteen days. He did it again at 80 and cut it to twelve. He said he'd been an old man contemplating retirement and instead found a brand-new version of himself.

It started with a movie. A film about a deaf young man riding around his own country lodged in the national imagination, and then a government poured concrete for a farmer on a secondhand bike.

What's the path near you that somebody had to fight a budget line for?

3 different species belly up to the bar after they notice the staff inject this pink flower with some extra nectar -- hummingbirds have EXCELLENT eyesight & they're watching!

This is a lucky shot of three different species of hummingbirds crowded around a single large pink flower. Buff-tailed Coronet is posed on one of the petals, Brown Violetear is drinking the nectar from the opposite open petal, and coming up fast from behind to grab a place of line is a tail-flashing Lesser Violetear. Tandayapa, Ecuador. The photo is a bit grainy because this area of rainforest is quite rainy and tends toward a lot of dark overcast periods. Photo by Peachfront.

I'm on a jaguar photo expedition, but sometimes the natural world gives you a wonderful surprise bonus. Ran across an ocelot yesterday evening on the way back to the lodge. Such a beautiful little thing, and ocelots have always been one of my very favorite wild cats.

            Good morning. 🌲🌳🪾

            3 August 2026

My grandfather clock has started chiming three minutes early, so I need to deal with that. I usually reset the time to match my phone whenever I wind it, unless I’ve managed to misplace the phone — which happens more often than I’d like to admit. Winding the clock means using a small crank to raise three brass weights that hang from brass chains.

The old Black Forest clock is about twenty‑five years old now, but it still ticks like a champ — knock on wood. We picked it up the last time we lived in Germany. The only real trouble we’ve had with it was when the lock on the front door broke and we couldn’t open it. That becomes a major crisis when winding time rolls around. We had to track down a clock repair person to get it open and replace the lock. He suggested we simply stop locking it, and my first thought was, well, duh — I should’ve figured that out myself.

Inside the clock, down each side, are two narrow glass shelves. Sitting on them are four ten‑inch‑tall white porcelain clown‑musician figurines with gold‑leaf hats and accents and sapphire‑colored Swarovski crystal buttons — souvenirs from a porcelain factory we visited in Italy. Of all the figurines we have, they’re my favorites: simple yet elegant.

That reminds me — the first time we visited Italy was in the ’80s, before the euro became a thing. We took a million lire with us. Just saying “a million lire” made me feel well‑off, even though it was only the equivalent of about seven to eight hundred dollars. We were actually packing lire, marks, and dollars. Nowadays it’s mostly euros everywhere. We were living in Germany when that country switched currency.

Oops, I’m past my character limit.

"A pair of white egrets stand like bright punctuation marks against a deep green forest, perched high on a treetop that rises above the surrounding canopy. Their bodies are slender and luminous, almost glowing against the darker needles of the pines. One egret stands tall and alert, neck stretched, while the other appears slightly more relaxed, its posture softening into the branches.

Below them, the forest is a layered tapestry: dense pine needles in the foreground, then a wash of autumn colors further back—rusty oranges, warm browns, and fading golds that hint at the seasonal shift. The trees form a textured wall of foliage, thick and wild, giving the sense that these birds have chosen a quiet lookout far from human noise.

The air in the image feels still. The egrets, bright and delicate, seem to pause the world for a moment—two white brushstrokes on nature’s canvas, balanced on the very tips of the treetops." - Microsoft Copilot

              Rice paddy pic No. 101.

The paddy opposite our Monday classroom.

Three distinct bands of water, bright yet overcast sky and between them pointy but blurry rice plants. I used an app called Spectre to take a hand held three second shot. It renders anything moving as a blur of color and form but anything static as sharp. The reflection the water is clear whilst the plant leaves brush the sky.

Do not eat it. Lichens absorb everything from the air; that's their whole nature, and it makes many of them mildly toxic and all of them efficient collectors of whatever drifts past.

The medicine isn't in the mouth. It's in the reading. Lichen is the oldest air-quality monitor ever built.

One “wrinkle”— before the swim, a large fin emerged and moved about for several minutes. Drew quite a crowd of onlookers. With the known presence of aggressive sharks here, I was just about to cancel the swim. But soon the fin flopped back and forth, consistent with an ocean sunfish, not a shark. After waiting a while, I then went for the swim. Fun!
