              After a storm, look on the ground under the oaks and pines.

              Pale grey-green tangles come down with the limbs. Pull one strand: if a white elastic core stretches inside the green sheath before it snaps, that's usnea. Old man's beard. Take only what already fell — never off the living tree, because it grows slowly and it does not come back on your schedule.

              Dry it a day on a towel. Pack a jar half full, cover with 100-proof vodka, four weeks in a dark cupboard, shake it when you remember. Scotland, Appalachia, and China all reached for it for the same things: the throat that overstayed, the chest that never quite cleared after smoke season.

              It's an air-quality indicator. A wood with usnea in it is a wood with clean air, which tells you something about what you're standing in before it tells you anything about your lungs.

                The sky was cloud-crazy on the way home yesterday. The sky was covered with thin rippling clouds and then I saw this one huge fluffster cloud just hanging out all by its lonesome over a hill. I don't know why but I was very taken with it.

                                          This amazing cat, after jumping from a tree and nailing this caiman bigger than she is, wrestled its dead body to the bank before going back a half a mile or so to get her cubs to share in the meal. The power and stamina of these jaguars is just unbelievable.

                                            📷 Went elk-spotting at Kituwah this morning, driving slowly along the grid of narrow gravel roads between corn fields.

                                            I sat idling between dense woods and corn that towers over the Fiat. Sister and I were texting pictures from our morning when a large bull elk sprinted out of the corn, across the road, within feet of the car and into the forest.

                                            Not a great picture, but a document that will remind me always of that heart-stopping moment at 6:40 AM, August 4, 2026. ❤️

Little monsters have been know to slip quietly into kitchens when no one is around and sneak a sip of two of freshly brewed sweetness.
