June 22: How do you use buildings and architecture in your current story?

A lot of the drama is indoors, whether a lord's mansion showing he's fond of innovation, a girls school, or an austere meeting hall. Can be practical, for action scenes, for atmosphere, or just to ground the people in a feels-real world

                What have I read recently?

                Just finished:
                Hitler's Secret by Rory Clements
A Prince & a Spy by Rory Clements
Both WWII thrillers involving Cambridge Don Tom Wilde. Far fetched escapism & I've finished the whole series now.

The Finest Hotel in Kabul by Lyse Doucet. The story of the Inter Continental hotel as it and the people who relied on it lived through troubled times. A must read in my humble opinion.

                Just started:
Banking on Murder by Jonathan Whitelaw, a cosy crime novel. Easy reading after ploughing into something heavy.

                Recommend:
North Run by LM Jones. First in the detective inspector Sarah Allerton crime series.

Tempted by those adverts for magazine reading apps? They charge around ยฃ13 per month; not an insignificant amount for many.

You should first be aware that your local library has a similar app, offering free access to magazines, books, audio books and more - at no cost whatsoever to readers.

When I worked at a bookstore, I learned that when an author like Dean Koontz signs his books, their resale value goes up. I also learned that when an author like Stephen King signs Dean Koontz's books, the price goes even higher and that Dean Koontz is not amused by this.

Today in Reading: I just finished Lottie Hazell's PIGLET after blasting through it over the last three days. Shallow in all the right ways (so that the deep parts suck you under), it tells the story of a woman on a downward spiral after the facade of her perfect life leading up to her perfect wedding cracks up. There's food, there's emotional repression, and there's a barnstormer of a meltdown at the end. Recommended, especially if you shop at Waitrose (but grew up on ASDA).

People often ask questions on social media platforms like "Which genre do you like?"

My initial response is to say fantasy, but reading other people's posts it seems that most of them assume that fantasy must have two things that I don't particularly like: (1) "Worldbuilding" and (2) a main character with defined superpowers.

I don't mind villains having superpowers, but not the good guys.

So what kind of books can I say I like (and try to write too, for that matter)?
