The temp is lower as it rained all day. Flowers look prettier with raindrops on.
Have a good evening and a great weekend, everyone.

These bladder campion (Silene vulgaris) flowers from the Wiley Trail are lovely, but I was especially struck by the colors of the stamens and anthers:

We had so much rain the past few days I might not need to water the garden today, even though it's going to be 90°F. We'll see.

My first Milkweed blooms. I planted a dozen Showy Milkweed starts this Spring. They are native to Oregon. Only one has bloomed so far, but I think a few are getting close. My hope is to attract Monarchs, but I realize it may take a few years for the plants to get established. I was surprised by the pleasant smell. Very similar to Lilac if you ask me.

Our hump is the humidity and heat, and I don't think we can get over the hump today.
But the humidity keeps our hydrangea from wilting even in the hot sun.

Solidago canadensis (Canadian goldenrod) can be invasive in the right conditions (rich moist garden soil) but give it poor dry and stony soil in full sunshine and it is very well behaved and needs no care at all apart from cutting it down in late winter. Pollinators love it and the yellow flowers really glow in the sunshine. The plants in the picture have not been watered this summer and are still looking good while many other plants are flagging. #flowers #climatechange #allotment

Starting a new sketchbook, from a company I haven't tried before, so I'm a little nervous about how the paper will be. So far, so good. I'm liking how my inks play with this paper, but I'm not sure if it can take ink on both sides. But that's ok.

Had an ink disaster before starting today's #inkyDays drawing. Somehow, the cap on this bottle of shimmer-orange ink wasn't on tightly enough. So, when I shook it, to mix, it splattered all over the place. After cleaning up the mess, I didn't feel like drawing with that ink.
Instead, I used it as the center of a calming floral pattern.
Here's an in-progress shot.
Going with a comforting floral pattern for today's #inkyDays drawing. This time, with a shimmery mossy green ink and a diluted blue. I'm loving how these inks are playing together.

Going with a comforting floral motif for today's drawing with this gorgeous ink. I loved it so much that I did a bigger one on watercolor paper, too.

#Bumblebees are struggling in #UKHeatwaves - but you can help them
Justin Rowlatt, July 21, 2026
Excerpt: "Conservationists say the best way to help is by creating more flower-rich habitats, so bumblebees can find food even as the climate becomes more extreme.
"Dr Sarah Beynon is an insect expert whose west Wales farm is managed for wildlife as well as food. She has planted #meadows, #willows, #hedgerows, #TussockyGrasses and late-flowering crops to give insects food through the summer.
" 'When we came, this farm was a wildlife desert,' she says. 'In 10 years, it's become a nature reserve.'
"Her message is that people do not need acres of land to help. A pot of native wildflowers on a doorstep or windowsill can act as a small refuelling stop for insects moving through a human-dominated landscape.
" 'Your flowerpot is a service station,' she says. 'It's somewhere to rest, refuel and carry on.'
"Dr Richard Comont adds that putting in a pond [#BeeWateringStation] - however small - and shade can also help.
"#Flowers growing near water tend to produce nectar with more moisture in it, he says. Bumblebees cannot collect water in the way honeybees do, they get most of the liquid they need from nectar, so wetter nectar can help make colonies more resilient in hot weather.
Whilst planting dense #shrubs gives bumblebees places to escape the heat of the sun, and can allow them to move between flowers through cooler patches of air."

There is a nice clump of echinacea purpurea (coneflower) on my allotment and it is at its best right now. Those two white-tailed bumblebees are loving it!

The allotment at the weekend. I am glad there are still quite a lot of plants flowering, we had no rain since mid June and sunshine and above average temperatures nearly every day. The plants which are still flowering are all very drought resistant such as Hypericum perforatum, Centaurea nigra and Echinops ritro. I also have some nice Evening primrose (Oenothera) and Antirrhinum flowering in the foreground. #flowers #allotment #garden
I'm pretty sure this is Symphyotrichum Foliaceum (Leafy Aster). (Location: Southeastern Utah.)
