As the world grapples with intensifying climate change, accelerating environmental degradation, and the alarming loss of biodiversity, Ethiopia stands on the threshold of an extraordinary national moment. Only hours remain before millions of Ethiopians unite to plant 800 million seedlings in a single day—a scale of collective environmental action rarely witnessed anywhere in the world

      - Building for the Future!

has been described as "the closest thing the Region has to participatory democracy, in that it posts projects that the cities/townships/region are working on and solicits feedback from the people living there / using the amenities to guide the ways in which they are doing the project."

      Welcome to Kitchener 2051!

"As Kitchener grows to become a city of up to 450,000 people, we need a new plan. A new Official Plan will guide growth and shape the way that neighbourhoods evolve and change. The new Official Plan needs to be ambitious and clear in our intentions as we plan for the Kitchener of 2051.

Kitchener 2051 is about the people who call Kitchener home today and in the future

That includes , , longtime residents, business owners and entrepreneurs. It’s about our community today but also about the people who are not yet here. Like the young people who will grow old in our community, the family looking to move to Kitchener, or the student who will call our community home after graduation. Kitchener 2051 looks at how we move around the city and the places in between. It is about what we will need to do together to grow, adapt, and succeed in a and complete city.

Kitchener 2051 needs to consider a full range of perspectives to ensure that the Official Plan reflects the needs of all. This includes communities often underrepresented in these processes, like equity-denied communities, renters, and people who have experienced , and .

Along the way, we will learn from the community as we shape an Official Plan that reflects who we are, what we value, and the Kitchener we can become."

                Text of letter:

Your climate change leadership
To: The Right Honourable Mark Carney
August 2 2026
Dear Mr. Carney,
You are a year plus into your mandate, and you have accomplished much.
But with respect, you are failing in your greatest challenge: climate change. There are few left among us now unaware that reversing the ravages of hothouse earth is the defining task of our time. And with your power, your networks, and your influence, you are in a unique position to be a world leader here. For one is urgently needed.
Instead, you have abandoned many of the already tepid climate mitigation measures Canada had put in place. You are aggressively promoting the continued burning of fossil fuels with new pipelines and subsidies to the oil sector. And what's with this carbon capture? You and I both know this is a useless technology, one that doesn't work at anywhere remotely near the scale necessary to make a whit of difference.
You can be a champion, sir. You can reverse course. Or you can continue to fail us.
Please choose wisely. Time is running out.

🌿 What is a Food Forest, and Why Does It Matter?

A food forest is a garden designed to mimic the way a natural forest grows—but instead of only wild plants, it's filled with edible and useful species. Trees, shrubs, herbs, vines, groundcovers, and root crops all grow together in layers, creating a thriving ecosystem where each plant supports the others.

The result is a resilient landscape that produces fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts, and other valuable crops while improving soil health, conserving water, increasing biodiversity, and requiring fewer external inputs over time.

At Green Youth Movement, this is the vision we are working towards.

Once we have secured the full funding needed to acquire our land, we aim to establish a food forest that will serve as both a productive demonstration site and a learning hub. This will enable us to increase food production, diversify our harvests, and train many more young people, farmers, and community members in regenerative agriculture and sustainable food systems.

A food forest is more than a place to grow food—it's an investment in healthier communities, restored ecosystems, climate resilience, and a more sustainable future.

🌱 By supporting our vision, you're not just helping us plant trees—you are helping us cultivate knowledge, restore the land, and empower the next generation to grow food in harmony with nature.

Together, we can grow a greener, more food-secure future.

Every harvest means more families with food on the table, more children nourished, and more strength in our local community. Beyond feeding people, this garden supports the environment by keeping land productive, encouraging greener spaces, and reminding us that sustainable farming is part of a healthier planet. 🌍💚
The beauty of these amazing maize plants is not only in their size, but in what they represent: resilience, hard work, and the power of community growth.

How golf courses can be repurposed to meet the needs of people and planet

                                  Autumn 2024
by Grace Crabtree & Dan Woolley

"Back in April 2020, shortly after the UK had gone into lockdown for the first time, Guy Shrubsole, the campaigner and author of Who Owns England (2019), set out to map and investigate London’s golf courses. While a natural continuation of his wider work on land ownership, it was also given particular urgency in the moment – not least for those living in densely populated cities – as the nation began to ask questions about use of, and access to, .

"The results of this research produced some surprising findings. For example, although a considerable number of golf courses in Greater London are held in private ownership, the figure is less than half, at 45%. This turns out to be only slightly larger than the number owned by councils (42%). After several decades in which councils, schools, and other public institutions have been forced to sell off green space – including school playing fields and county farms – it seems pertinent to ask why so many golf courses have remained untouched.

"Happily, there are signs of progress. In , the recently purchased a former golf course, and have been busy planting trees. The vision is for the site to 'develop as native broadleaf woodland' and to link with other woodland sites as part of the larger , providing green space and fighting .

"And further east, on the coast, the is busy converting a disused golf course – – to 'create new habitats for a variety of , especially migrating birds like black-tailed , spotted and , along with breeding birds such as , and ' This environmental mission is coupled with the social objective of providing 'a space where everyone can enjoy the benefits of being in nature.'

"More controversially, perhaps, the London-based architecture firm has developed a proposal to build housing on an existing golf course in , at the northern end of the city. Understandably, not everyone agrees with this vision, arguing that green space, once built upon, is lost forever. However, faced with an acute and growing housing crisis, it may be useful to ask whether some compromise solutions might begin to develop at the edges. [Yes, like housing with LOTS of Green Space, including , , and ! Problem solved!]

"What the above examples demonstrate is a growing interest in the potential for repurposing golf courses, for reasons ranging from climate change mitigation and biodiversity benefits, to providing space for housing and food growing.

"Which brings us to , where the (#GCFN) are leading on a proposal to transform a disused golf course into a food growing space, with much of the land restored as a richly biodiverse space where wildlife can thrive."

A just transition or strategic adaptation is urgently needed. It requires a genuine reckoning that the ultra rich Epstein class are the biggest polluters and are burning through ‘our’ supposed ‘carbon budgets’ at a horrific rate.

Text on screenshot: From the United States and Canada to France and Spain, from Japan to Morocco, India and Pakistan, the past few weeks have felt like living inside an oven. Western Europe endured its hottest June on record, and fiercest fires in July, with repeated heatwaves slamming France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the UK. Early analyses suggest the late‑June 2026 European heatwave may have killed around 20,000 people in just one week, with more than 10,000 excess deaths recorded during that period, most of them among people over 65. In France alone, public health authorities later estimated more than 5,700 excess deaths during the historic June heatwave.
