[Sidenote: 42. The interceptions were impossible under the circumstances

I have already explained (from paras. 21-24) that these early

trustworthy traditions, and I have also given the probable nature of
those marked 4, 5 and 6.

“Until penalties are set at levels that genuinely threaten profitability; until repeat offenders face prosecution rather than negotiated undertakings; until ministerial exemption powers are ring-fenced from commercial lobbying; and until SLAPP-style litigation is legislatively constrained — the calculation for large corporations will remain unchanged.

The law is only as strong as the willingness to enforce it without fear or favour. At present, for those with sufficient resources, it remains entirely optional”

Poet of Nature, thou hast wept to know
That things depart which never may return:
Childhood and youth, friendship and love's first glow,
Have fled like sweet dreams, leaving thee to mourn.
These common woes I feel. One loss is mine
Which thou too feel'st, yet I alone deplore.
Thou wert as a lone star, whose light did shine
On some frail bark in winter's…

              Forest Breath

I captured this image of a resting ruby-throated hummingbird (scientific name) during the summer of 2025. It is an interesting image event with a background that is a bit grainy here and there. I think this particular tiny bird is an immature male because of the light black speckles on its throat.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

              swede1952-photographs.pixels.c

"A small hummingbird rests on a bare, slender branch, holding itself with the poise of something both fragile and fiercely alive. Its body is no larger than a thumb, yet every feather is rendered with exquisite clarity. Soft grays and whites form the base of its plumage, while faint iridescent tones shimmer along its throat and crown—subtle hints of the ruby glow that gives the species its name.

The bird’s long, needle‑fine beak points slightly upward, as if it’s listening for the next cue from the wind. Its dark eye is bright and alert, catching a glint of light that makes it feel almost curious. The background is a smooth wash of green, blurred into a gentle gradient that feels like a quiet forest morning. Against that soft backdrop, the hummingbird appears suspended in a moment of stillness—an uncommon pause from a creature known for motion.

The branch beneath it is simple and unadorned, a thin line that emphasizes the bird’s delicate weight. The entire scene feels intimate, calm, and reverent, as though the world has briefly stopped to let this tiny marvel rest." - Microsoft Copilot

"A slender snowy egret stands alone in a wash of bright, silvery light, as if the world around it has been reduced to pure glow. Its body is a smooth sculpture of white feathers, so clean and fine they look almost weightless. The egret’s long black bill points slightly downward, giving it a thoughtful, poised expression. A soft halo of yellow surrounds its eyes, the only warm color on its otherwise cool, porcelain face.

Its neck curves in a gentle S‑shape—relaxed, elegant, unhurried. The thin, dark legs disappear into the shallow water, where a faint reflection mirrors its form like a watercolor brushstroke. The background is overexposed into near‑whiteness, making the bird appear as though it’s stepping out of a dream or emerging from morning mist. The entire scene feels quiet, delicate, and serene—just the egret, the water, and the soft glow of light." - Microsoft Copilot

A Black-tailed Godwit perched on a thick, weathered wooden fence post in a lush, rural polder landscape.

It has a long, straight, needle-like bill, a warm orange-brown breeding plumage on its neck and breast, and mottled brown and grey feathers on its back. It is facing to the right, looking out over the landscape.

Mounted on the fence just below and to the left of the bird is an information placard. Ironically, the sign features an illustration of the exact same bird species, creating a "picture-in-picture" effect.

                          Smurfs Log: Lucky

                          * Not only was I lucky enough to see a stoat up close today (see previous post), but this afternoon I finally found some of those tiny, fluffy, woolly creatures other people have been spotting. This one was kind enough to bring her two little lambs with her, too.

The dominant feature in the immediate foreground is a large, thick, weathered wooden fence post. It has a square profile, a rough texture with visible cracks and grain, and is heavily covered in green moss or algae.

Standing atop are three tiny sheep. On the right is a larger, fluffy, brownish-grey sheep facing forward. To its left are two smaller, dark brown lambs standing close together, looking toward the camera. Because of the perspective, they appear to be standing directly on top of the large wooden post, creating a playful, layered effect.

My favourite time of the day to photograph wildlife is early in the morning because most people and dog owners are still at home and the light is good. I also prefer less crowded areas.
Early one Sunday morning in winter, I was walking on a path near an estuary in Oyster River when I came across a sleepy Great blue heron. That was about 10 years ago and it is still one of my favourite photos.

A Great blue heron with its head tucked between its shoulders stands on a leafless branch that has green lichen and moss. The heron is facing to the left of the image and is at eye level with the photographer. Leafless branches of different sizes with moss and lichen fill up the rest of the image. There is a forest in the background shrouded in fog.

A translucent, tissue-like white skin encloses the young flower cluster while it develops. As the individual flower buds mature and expand, they tear the spathe open.

Packed tightly in the center are dozens of small, green, teardrop-shaped structures. Each of these is an individual bud that will eventually open into a small, star-shaped flower.

Just a nice pastoral scene for your Friday afternoon.

A color landscape photo of an old small oddly shaped barn, a green pasture, and rolling hills in the background. A small hill on the left has a couple of conifer trees on it. There's a gate and fence on the left with the barn on the right. It is an odd shape with a long sloped roof on the left and a much shorter roof on the right. The sky of blue and dotted is small puffy clouds.

I took it while balanced on the edge of a cliff, capturing what was a gloomy canyon scene before we were blown away as the sun cut through the overcast skies. Illuminating the mist and the damp foliage below.

A narrow stream winds deep into a misty old-growth rainforest canyon, framed by thick moss-covered branches and towering conifers with soft light filtering through the fog above. The lush green moss, dramatic depth, and ethereal mist create a deeply immersive and enchanting Pacific Northwest forest scene.
