    A scarce chaser dragonfly, viewed from a top-down, slightly angled perspective. It has a robust, fuzzy thorax covered in fine, golden-brown hairs. Its abdomen is a striking, vibrant orange-yellow color. A distinct, dark black, ladder-like or segmented pattern runs straight down the center of its abdomen. The dragonfly has four large, transparent wings fully extended horizontally. The veins of the wings are highly detailed and intricate, showing a golden-yellow coloration near the base, transitioning to darker veins toward the tips. The dragonfly is resting on the very top of a weathered, vertical wooden post.

              Nest story

              I wonder if there is a ranking of bird engineering talents. The design wasn't that bad, the location not quite. Poor mourning dove, who was in fact sheltered from the water above its head, but who had not foreseen that there would be water underneath.

              My gutter was overflowing and I was wondering why. I was able to rescue the nest and reinstall it in the same spot, but above the water. Hoping that the dove will come back now 🤞

                                                Interesting find in a puddle, maybe 30 cm deep: the gelatinous mass contains the spawn of the spotted Salamander (Ambystoma maculatum), the green colour is caused by a symbiotic alga (Oophila amblystomatis) living inside the egg. The algae provide the embryo with oxygen and nutrients.
