Sometimes the simple ideas are harder to achieve. I wanted blue sky as a background, so I had to get low. But when you're low, things that are standing upright aren't on your plane of focus. So I did a Mr. Fantastic impression, holding the camera with one hand and pulling the stem closer with my foot. Neither the plant nor I were hurt in the process. 🌱

The #CityNatureChallenge is still in full swing. While the four days of observing have passed, everyone's now uploading photos and identifying the species in all the observations, The closing date is 10 May.

Globally the CNC has already topped 2.6 million observations. Here in Aotearoa-NZ 1,715 people have so far uploaded 54,265 observations of 4,494 species, with Wellington currently our leading city.

If you took any nature photos between Friday and Monday, 24–27 April, there's still time to upload them to #iNaturalist and have them count towards the challenge.

Me, I've just finished geotagging all my photos in #darktable using my GPS tracks and need to do some photo cropping before I start uploading batches of photos to the iNaturalist website.

The event is a long way from over. 🙂

A screenshot from my computer of the darktable app. It shows thumbnails of assorted insect photos I took over the observing period of the City Nature Challenge. I load my photos into darktable, offset any time differences between my cameras and the true time, then batch geotag them all with gps tracks from the Garmin GPS unit from each day. I'll now delete the photos I don't need and crop others that need cropping before batch uploading to the iNaturalist website. If you look on the top left, you'll see that I have over 2,000 photos from each day of the challenge. We'll see how many I have time to upload before the deadline of 10 May.

For those in the UK, you have the chance to vote on 1 from each of the 3 categories of animal that will be adorning our bank notes in the coming future. I don't use cash, but it will be cool to have animals on our notes all the same. Just like Costa Rica does.

I was sitting in my camp chair with my long lens hoping for some pretty birds to pose for photos when I caught movement up the small valley. Very excited when this bear ambled by as I'd only ever gotten brief glimpses while driving.

He wasn't very concerned about me, but did look over from time to time as he was foraging along the ground. I got lots of photos, but this was the most "artistic." Only later remembered I could have taken video. D'oh!

Cinnamon bear is a subspecies of the American black bear and not aggressive like grizzlies, or nearly as large.
