Found a Viceroy (Limenitis archippus) today. They mimic Monarchs, and are equally distasteful to predators. Their caterpillars feed on willow and keep the Salicylic acid (think Aspirin) in their body, making them taste bitter.

Sunshine highlights the right forewing of a somewhat bedraggled but still lovely Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. Butterflies have been abundant this year and we’ve had the fun of seeing a couple new species.

Today was a good day. A really good day. It’s been a while since I’ve had one of those.
Four of our family of seven went to the Oregon coast. We ventured over a bay to a peninsula, where we’ve never been. And it was the best choice we could have made.
We visited three beaches and a scenic loop. It was SO beautiful. We brought good food with us, and ate it while looking out over the vast ocean.
Oh, and that’s about as close as I’ve been to a family of deer. There were three of them, foraging on the side of the road.
Good times.

It is the unqualified result of all my experience with the sick, that second only to their need of fresh air is their need of light; that, after a close room, what hurts them most is a dark room. And that it is not only light but sunlight they want. I had rather have the power of carrying my patient about after the sun, according to the aspect of the rooms,…

Brightly the sun of summer shone,
Green fields and waving woods upon,
And soft winds wandered by;
Above, a sky of purest blue,
Around, bright flowers of loveliest hue,
Allured the gazer's eye.
But what were all these charms to me,
When one sweet breath of memory
Came gently wafting by?
I closed my eyes against the day,
And called my willing soul away,
From…

Celebrating the 3 month anniversary of getting a new Dacron aorta with a nice 10 mile gravel bike ride out into the country. What a freaking crazy year.
Today is Peak Perseid: The best night of the year's best meteor shower, especially easy to view because of a new Moon.
I love Marcin Rosadziński's fish-eye photo of the 2024 Perseids, which captures the feeling of us all sitting on a little rock in space.

SHE has gone,-- she has left us in passion and pride,--
Our stormy-browed sister, so long at our side!
She has torn her own star from our firmament's glow,
And turned on her brother the face of a foe!

. LAYING THE TRAP
Our first job was executed much more easily than I had anticipated. We caught Manuel sound asleep, and LeVere had sinewy hands at his throat before the fellow could grasp a weapon, or even clearly comprehend the nature of the attack. The narrowness of the stateroom prevented my taking much part in the affair, but the mulatto needed no help, as…

Sunset Sentinel
I found this silhouetted photograph while going through my recent shots, and I like the way it turned out. I added the color and vignette effect, which gives it the look of a sun glowing behind the tree. I’m pretty sure the bird perched at the top of the pine is an American crow.
The photographs I share here don’t appear as vivid as they do in my Pixel’s gallery. To make them load more easily, I reduce their size and slightly lower their quality. Take a look:

The ten species of wild cats in Brazil--the jaguar, ocelot, puma, jaguarundi, pampas cat, northern and southern tiger cat, Geoffrey's cat, and margay--are at risk from habitat fragmentation, disease transmission from domestic cats (FIV, FeLV, FPV, distemper, adenoviruses, and rabies), and hybridization with domestic cats. Reducing habitat fragmentation is a priority for reducing these risks.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens have been caring for a native plant of Mexico for the last ten years. It has been growing in their greenhouse which dates back to the 19th century. But now it has produced a flower spike so large that roof panels have had to be removed to allow the 18ft spike to poke out. This flower signifies the death of the plant, which only flowers once in its lifetime, giving the flower the name 'death bloom'. https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/plants-first-flower-is-death-bloom-so-tall-it-went-through-roof/
This is pretty cool...!
Scientists Think One of Earth’s Simplest Organisms May Work like a Giant Brain
One of Earth’s oldest plants appears to pass electrical messages through its dense green mats.

"Here’s what you’ll learn when you read this story:
- While #moss form vital substrates that allow more complex plant and animal life to move into new ecological niches, the plants themselves are often seen as simple lifeforms.
- A new study complicates this picture with evidence of electrophysical communication in mats of #Brachythecium rutabulum, a rough-stalked feather moss found throughout Great Britain.
- Although future studies will be needed, this research shows that one of the oldest types of plant life on Earth may have a secret means of communication."

Migration has started, birds are now crossing the Strait of Gibraltar after breeding and heading to their wintering grounds on the continent of Africa. Here is the monitoring list for the week 3rd to 9th. I will attempt to share weekly. They post to their Facebook page, but here is a link to their website https://www.fundacionmigres.org/en/
I should note they started monitoring on 13th July.
